Diving into the new school year as the lakers September 9, 1987 was the first day of classes at Southwest High Qur nnc tand plays at our homecomin j School. Most of the students expected the same school routine for the next nine months. Yet. things have changed. Most importantly, our namesake is no longer the beloved 'Indians'’, rather, we have become the new and exciting ‘ Lakers I There were many mixed feelings about this change, nonetheless, a name is but only a name. It is the student's acceptance that concern us. Here at Southwest, students come from many different ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds. However, we all have one thing in common, we share the Southwest High School experience together. On the outside we seem to be preppy, punk, conservative, radical, mainstream, and some a little left of center. These differences are what make Southwest unique from other schools. It is our student body's ability to look beyond the basic stereotypes and intertwine with different kinds of individuals. Whether or not you wear the latest trends or drive the hottest cars, appears to be unimportant when it comes to making lasting friendships. Southwest is made of bricks and cement, but its strength lies in the hands of the students. It is their pride and respect towards their school that keeps it from tumbling down.
