Most of the students expected the same school routine for the next nine months. Yet. things have changed. Most importantly, our namesake is no longer the beloved 'Indians'’, rather, we have become the new and exciting ‘ Lakers I There were many mixed feelings about this change, nonetheless, a name is but only a name. It is the student's acceptance that concern us. Here at Southwest, students come from many different ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds. However, we all have one thing in common, we share the Southwest High School experience together. On the outside we seem to be preppy, punk, conservative, radical, mainstream, and some a little left of center. These differences are what make Southwest unique from other schools. It is our student body's ability to look beyond the basic stereotypes and intertwine with different kinds of individuals. Whether or not you wear the latest trends or drive the hottest cars, appears to be unimportant when it comes to making lasting friendships. Southwest is made of bricks and cement, but its strength lies in the hands of the students. It is their pride and respect towards their school that keeps it from tumbling down. Jam! 5 We've made an ocean full of improvements! Welcome to the new Southwest. This year brought about many changes. For example (and the most obvious) we are no longer the indians, we are now the LAKERS!! This is super neat. With this new mascot, we have a lot more freedom to represent it. It will take some time for the Southwest students to get used to it, but that's ok. Another fantastic addition to Southwest's curriculum is the introduction of the I.B. (International Baccalaureate) program. This gives the over-achievers in our school a chance to challenge their minds. Classes under the program include: English. Mathematics, Science, and History. Also, a new program that Southwest tried this year was the M.I.C.E. (Mother infant child education) program. M.l.C.E. is headed by Ruth Wyden. The program is used to help teenagers (mostly girls) in making decisions concerning such information such as birth control. It is also used to guide pregnant teenagers into making the urgent decision for them and their baby. The last new fresh'' program to Southwest this year was the Mini Clinic. This is not used to take the place of your doctor, but along with your family doctor. There was a big controversy about the clinic because they can distribute prescriptions for birth control, nonetheless, this clinic was an excellent addition to the school and allowed the students help if they needed it. note: Also the newspaper changed its name from the Arrow to the Channel, (The newspaper was the Arrow since 1940, when the school First opened). The Yearbook found it only appropriate that we change our name also. We took a vote at the beginning of the year and the winning choice was the Aquarian. The reason behind this choice was that the sign of Aquarius on the zodiac is the sign of the water bearer. Since we are Lakers, the theme of water is carried out through our name. In addition to that, we also thought that Aquarius sounded super cool. By the way. for all the people who take time to read this and are interested, if you wondered and wondered what Wagistanian meant, since that name is now extinguished, I thought now it was time to tell what the name meant. Yes, it is an indian name, “wagi” means white and stan means purple. It's kind of a let down, it's not as imaginative as it could have been, but appropriate for the school. This year is very memorable. We've changed for the better! Shy Mary looks away from the camera, she thinks no one can sec her. The victory dance was a hit The excitement of our victory filled the air at the homecoming dance. Everyone dressed for the occasion and was ready to dance the night away. The gym was decorated for the dance with streamers and balloons everywhere. It was fun to see other students, the well dressed seniors and the freshmen not knowing exactly what to do. Most people showed up around 10:00 and the party started to roll. The dance featured a wide variety of music and pleased most all people. Especially this year, the dance went extremely well because of the victory' game. Homecoming wras very special to some and very successful. Rya decides to ignore her brother for the evening. 10 Tonya introduces us to her hot date. Rock on Bill. At least he's trying to dance Tom. you're such a disco king. Selene shows us how to dance. Mold on tight Christ!. A wave of excitement! The Homecoming festivities ended with a 15-14 win The Members of the C-Squad show their spirit. Go get 'em The homecoming festivities began with the traditional pep fest and ended with a victory’ dance. The parade was a sure hit. There were many original floats with enthusiastic participants. Students went to the game hoping for a win. During the first half, our chances looked bleak. Surprisingly, the team got it together, pulled through, and won the game. The score was 15-141 Congratulations and a pat on the back go to all of the players! Some might think our win was luck or the power of the new laker name. Yet, all of us at Southwest know that wc won because of the team's skills. Way to go Lakers, keep It up!! She doesn't really understand why she's sitting there. A group get together. 15 Amy pours down her popcorn during half time. Our favorite fans Paul looks pretty good, huh? Style rains here Diversity is the Key While diversity prevented the development of strong clothing trends at Southwest, fashion was still evident. For girls, mini-skirts (sometimes micromini) were back strong, especially in denim. Hair bows and BLACK came back. Labels had less prestige as their presence was more widespread. Oversized shirts were still worn. For guys, it was another year of rolled up, tom, and tapered jeans. The presence of baseball caps and t-shirts sporting popular labels was great. Levi jeans were still extremely popular. Unisex trends included the ongoing popularity of university athletic wear. Tie-dying everything proved to be fashionable. Jeans were of all types: black, frosted, stonewashed, standard blue, faded, old, and ripped. The true difference in 1987 was the presence of Twins wear, showing our pride in our World Champs! nikkl has a style all her own Honda has on the more mainstream outfit. 14 notice the carring, stylish, huh? 15 The common look of the tank top modeled by Charles. The students other life. Life outside of school You may be wondering what the students at Southwest do once the last bell rings at 1:50. Despite popular belief, we do not rush home and do our homework. Some of the rebellious students choose, instead, to have FUN! For example, there are many extracurricular activities that the students get involved in, such as, the Aquarian, the Channel, Mosaic, Debate Team, and for all the jocks, there are sports. Although these activities keep the students occupied during the week, what arc they supposed to do after friday rolls around? The majority of the Southwest student body reply to this question with a simple statement, PARTY! But that's not the only thing that qualifies for weekend fun. There's bowling at Biltmore Bowl, eating at Edincr, Perkins, Burger King, Rocky Roccoco’s. Malt Shop, or ordering pizza at home? Shopping is a weekend sport for many girls and boys, such places like Southdale, Calhoun Square, The Conservatory downtown, or 50th n France. For those who may be short on money, a nice walk around our beautiful lakes or a quiet talk with a friend. With so many things to do on the weekends, two days hardly seem long enough time to accomplish them. Just when you're relaxed and used to the swing of things during the weekend, Sunday rolls around and it's time to do HOMEWORK!! Sunday is known as the Official Homework Day. It's the day set aside for doing the homework that is due the following day. Alas, Monday rolls around and it's time to go back to school. The only thing that the students think during the week is, I can't wait 'til Friday. 16 The students are TREK from school for the dayl! 17 Howdy Y'all Hillbilly heaven at the dance 1. 2. cha, cha, cha. Julie really knows the moves We all had a super fun time at this years Sadie Hawkins dance. The Lakerettes proved that they can pull off a winning dance. There were straw hats, flannel shirts, bandanas, overalls, freckles, and smiles filling the room. Even though it was hotter than Hades, we made the best of it and boogied the night away .. It was in the east gym. which wasn't too good because it got hot mighty fast. The music was well chosen and well presented. Some of the couples chose to get hitched, or had their picture taken with the famous cow, or some just danced the night away. More people showed than were expected and EVERYONE dressed up. When the guys got sent to jail, the smooching started!! Sadies was a night to remember. SEE Y'ALL NEXT YEAR! YA HEAR?!?! Say, Get out of my face you ugly mutant from hellt” Baby, you're a star Mot stars of this year This year brought many exciting stars to the screen and stereo, such as: Max Headroom, Bruce Willis, Carey Elwes, Robin Wright, Vanna White, Patrick Swaze, Keifer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey, Jamie Gertz, Bill Cosby, Lisa Bonet. Malcom Jamal-Warner, Richard Dreyfus, Eddie Murphy, George Michael, Paul Simon, Hew Order, Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi, Tiffany, and Holly Hunter to name a few. Some of them were not so good and others were outstanding, nevertheless, the stars kept rolling in. Sting released his new album this year and Eddie Murphy gave his concert Raw. Good Morning Viet Mam proved to be a very funny movie and Roxanne was equally as funny starring two funny guys, Robin Williams and Steve Martin. 24 Spuds and Vanna White were almost an overnight success, their popularity grew enormously during this last year. Princess bride, a movie starring Robin Wright and Carey Elwes was a smash and Cher made a name for herself with the movie Moonstruck. Oprah Winfrey and Dolly Parton exercised their talents, having their own shows proved them to be successful. Mark Marrnon was quite a nice temporary addition loMoonllghting and his movie was, to say the least, interesting. 25 Well, here they arc the creme dt la creme of the class Martinez; Excessive Imaginationists- Paul Soucy and Jain of 1988. These arc the students who stand out in the Hall; Personality Plus- Xandcr Blakely and Katie McConn-j crowd for their physical appearances or their personality ville; Top Talents- Dylan Keefe and Nichol Miller; Lovely traits. Clayton Lonetrce. a former guard at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, was arrested in late December on espionage charges. 13-West German authorities arrest Muhammad Ali Mamadi, believed to be one of the four men who hijacked a TWA Jet to Beirut in June 1985 and killed a U.S. Navy diver. The United States seeks Hamadi's extradition. 20-Anglican Church envoy Terry Waite, on his fifth mission to negotiate with the kidnappers of foreign hostages, disappears in Beirut. FEBRUARY 24-A massive exploding star is discovered by astronomers. It is the nearest supernova in almost 400 years and is labeled Supernova 1987A. 26- The Tower commission, appointed by President Reagan to investigate the Iran-Contra affair, issues a report finding that Reagan failed to control his administration and was badly served by his advisers. 27- Moward Baker replaces Donald Regan, who was criticized by the Tower commission for ' chaos” in the White Mouse, as White Mouse chief of staff. 6 -The British ferry Herald of Free Enterprise sinks off Zeebrugge. Belgium; 189 die. The temperature in the Twin Cities hits 67°F, making it the warmest March 6 on record. 18- Former Reagan aide Michael Deaver is indicted on five counts of perjury. Me is accused of lying to a federal grand jury and to Congress about his lobbying activities. 19- Jim Bakker turns his $172 million PTL ministry over to the Rev. Jerry Falwell after exposure of sexual indiscretions. 20- Azidothymidine, or AZT, an antiviral drug that inhibits the ability of the AIDS virus to duplicate inside body cells, becomes the first drug to be given federal approval for the treatment of AIDS patients. 31-A judge upholds a surrogate-parent contract in the Baby M case, awarding custody of the child to father William Stem and ending all parental rights of mother Mary Beth Whitehead. AFRIL 16-St. Paul playwright August Wilson wins the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play Fences.” 22-After more than 25 years without a national Basketball Association franchise in the Twin Cities, the MBA votes to expand by four teams. The Minnesota Timber-wolves are set to begin play in the 1989-90 season. 26- The Minnesota zoos two beluga whales are shipped to Sea World after It is determined that one of them has an Irreversible bone infection. 27- Austrian President Kurt Waldheim is barred from the United States because of his alleged wartime activities in the Mazl army. May 5 -Congressional committees investigating the Iran-contra affair begin hearings. 6 -Former CIA director William Casey, believed to have had extensive knowledge of the Iran-contra dealings, dies of cancer. 8 -Gary Mart quits his presidential race after reports that he spent a weekend with Miami model Donna Rice. 17- The USSR Stark, a Mavy frigate on patrol in the Persian Gulf 19-A Judge rules that Bible Speaks church must return $6.6 million that Dayton heiress Elizabeth Dovydcnas testified she was duped Into giving to the organization. 23- Billy Glaze, a suspect in the mutilation-style killings of three Minnesota Indian women between July 1986 and April 1987. is arrested in Albuquerque. M.M.. on a drunken driving charge. Mpls police forward a criminal case against him to the Hennepin County attorney s office. Me had not been charged by the end of the year. JUnE 4 -The Minneapolis law firm of Dorsey and Whitney announces that former Vice President Walter Mondale is moving back to Minnesota to practice law. Mondale says he is not planning to run for political office. 8 -The State Department announces that the new U.S. Embassy complex being built in Moscow is riddled with listening devices planted in precast concrete pillars and beams. 11-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher wins a third term. 13-Minncsota humorist Garrison Keillor gives his final performance of A Prairie Home Companion. Keillor says he wants to return to writing. 16-A Mew York jury acquits subway gunman Bernard Goetz of attempted murder in the shooting of four black youths on a subway train in Dec. 1984, but finds him guilty on a weapon charge. 18- South Korean students riot to protest the nation's military regime and electoral process. 24- The West German government announces it will not extradite Hamadi, but will try him for air piracy and murder. 25- The Minnesota Legislature, called into special session after Dayton Hudson Corp. appeals for help in fighting off a takeover attempt, passes a bill against hostile corporate takeovers. 26- Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell, a moderate who played a pivotal role on the court, retires. JULY 1 -The U.S. Bankruptcy Court closes the financially troubled Carleton Celebrity Theater in Bloomington. 2 -Klaus Barbie, the Mazl official known as the butcher of Lyons, is convicted by a French court of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment. 20-28-A heat wave in Greece leaves nearly 900 people dead. 22-The United States begins escorting reflagged Kuwaiti tankers in the Persian Gulf. The Reagan administration says the move is necessary to protect freedom of navigation. 30-Perpich orders control of Minnesota's veterans' homes in Minneapolis and Hastings transferred to the Department of Mu-man Services after state officials cite the Minneapolis home for many health care violations. AUGUST 7 -Five Central American presidents, led by Costa Rica's Oscar Arias Sanchez, sign a preliminary peace plan calling for ceasefires and democratic reforms in the region. 16- A Morthwest Airlines jet carrying 157 people crashes shortly after takeoff from Detroit. Four-year-old Cecilia Cichan is the sole survivor. 17- Rudolf Mess, 93, the last survivor of the Mazi officials convicted by the Nuremberg tribunal in 1946. kills himself with an electrical cord in his Spandau Prison cell. 24-Lonetree becomes the first Marine ever convicted of espionage and is sentenced to 30 years in prison. 27- A federal appeals court strikes down a 1981 Minnesota law that requires women under 18 to either inform both parents or obtain court approval before getting an abortion. Chicago-based Carson Pirie Scott and Co. confirms that it is buying Donaldsons Department Stores for $163.5 million. SEPTEMBER 4 -Morthwest Airlines becomes the Mo. 1 target of consumer complaints, according to the Department of Transportation 7 -Erich Monecker becomes the first East German head of state to visit West Germany. 16-The United States celebrates the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. 28 23-Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., quits the presidential race after revelations that he had exaggerated his educational credentials and used parts of speeches by other political figures without crediting them. 30-Researchers report that the ozone shield over Antarctica has dwindled to the lowest level observed since measurements began more than 10 years ago. OCTOBER 13-Arias-Sanchez wins the Mobel Peace Prize. 16- Jessica McClure, 19 months old. Is rescued from a well in Midland, Texas, after being trapped for 58 hours. 19- The Dow Jones industrial average drops a record 508 points, spreading panic to financial markets worldwide. 20- Dart Qroup Corp. announces that it Is selling its 4.7 percent stake in Dayton Hudson and will drop its attempt to acquire the company. 23-Judge Robert Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court is defeated in the Senate 58-42 after an acrimonious debate about his stand on controversial Issues such as civil rights and abortion. 25-The Minnesota Twins defeat the St. Louis Cardinals in Qame 7 to win the WORLD SERIES. 27- About half a million people jam the streets of downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul to cheer the Twins. 28- Authorities raid the biggest marijuana plantation in Minnesota history about 48 tons of marijuana was seized at the 275-acre farm near Hew York Mills. riOVEMBER 2 -In a speech marking the 70th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev attacks the Stalin and Brezhnev eras. A federal Judge dismisses the last lawsuit brought against Scott County by 24 residents who claimed that their civil rights were violated when they were accused in the Jordan sexual-abuse cases. 5 -The South African government frees Govan Mbeki, a former chairman of the African national Congress, who had been In prison for 23 years. 7 -Judge Douglass Ginsberg withdraws his nomination to the Supreme Court after admitting marijuana use. 11-Vicent van Gough's Irises is sold for $53.9 million dollars, making It the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction. ORGANIZATIONS 3 e Aquarian The good, the bad, and the exhausted The Yearbook was quite a struggle this year, but we managed to pull through. It seemed that there were twice as many workers as there were last year and half the workers from last year. We started with enthusiasm and ended with the thought, thank goodness that all that is over, only waiting until next year when the process starts over agian. Despite the hard times, we had good times too. We had marvelous entertainment from Mike McAllister who was a great lip sync-er and the presence of our new yearbook mascot, Mr. Goober, found an important place in yearbook. The name for our newspaper originated from the minds of the editors, most of whom were editors for the first time. We worked hard to live up to our name as being the channel of news through out school and we all feel that we have more than succeeded. The year was marked with events, such as the name change, retired teachers, the start of the I.B. program, bomb scares and even death. Debate The 1988 debate team was a great success and a lot of fun for the team members, with top debators Peter Mason, and Paul Soucy (captains), Peter Schoenke, and Jay Pluimer. This years topic was U.S. policies in Latin America. With her in office were Christy Moe, vice-president, Kelly Williams, Secretary, and Valerie Steensma as the treasurer. They started off the year with a holiday Concert. The decorations and singing were superb. The singers were accompanied by pianists Amy Criticos, Kelly Williams, and Sarah Wagener. Anwatin's Junior High Choir joined Southwest with a few pieces of their own. In February, part of the choir went to Florida with Band for a vacation. Over the summer Dylan Keefe and Ed Morrow were the only two Minneapolis students named to the all-State Jazz Ensemble. Dylan was also named to the McDonald's All-American Band and has performed throughout the country. In addition to the usual band fall hayride and spring picnic, we enjoyed hosting the Holiday Dance with the Choir and finally relaxed with a cruise on Lake Minnetonka. The concerts were very noteworthy with the Pop concert keeping them laughing. Ruben Ristrom was a great guest soloist for the jazz band. Overall it has been a marching year for the band. We marched in six parades and two competitions. During the Winter Carnival we froze in the -24° air, but the highlight was the warm days in the beautiful Florida sun at Disney World and Epcot Center. fcj alent unfolds he Mosaic has good ideas The students at work, (except Eric Bcstrom. who decides to sleep.) This was the third year that the Mosaic Arts and Literary Magazine was in existence at Southwest. The group, led by co-editors Mike McAllister, Eric Bestrom and Gillian Uecker, became a stronger and larger organization with more staff members and a broader diversity of work from the students. At the weekly meetings, the staff, with help from advisor Larry Risser, discussed poems, short stories, art work, and photographs submitted by other students. These works were voted on separately without the author or artist's name revealed to give a fairer chance at acceptance. The Mosaic comes out in the spring of the year, available to the students at a low price. The Mosaic Art and Literary Magazine gives the students at Southwest an opportunity to share their works with people of their own age who are also interested in the creative arts. And promotion of the school mascot. This year the student Council set up Culture Club, a minority group to break the barriers of racism and responsible for name change motivation. It's been a great year for student Council achievements. They also introduced the Student forum, a place where students can be heard and help change the school for the better. Early in the year we raked and cleaned up the cast building courtyard, and held a picnic with the Life Skills students at Kenwood Kec. Center. Other service projects included monthly neighborhood cleanups, and a weekly peer study group for self help and tutoring. A spring picnic for exchange students is also planned. The main HHS fund raisers this year were Carnation grams, Sadie grams, Elf-a-grams. and others. In addition, MMS sponsored the May dance. Most of the money raised was spent on $250 contributions to each Makc-a-wish of Minnesota and the Homeless Hews network. Overall 1987-88 was a fun and productive year for HUS. Even with their defeat it was north who went to regions, because north was able to defeat Washburn. The most difficult hurdle that the football team had to contend with was the lack of players, and next years line up doesn't look any better. They were led by captains Hick Brown, Mike Tupper, and Mike Mills. The boys scored their best victory on September 28 when they beat Washburn by a score of 2-1 in overtime. Jim Bartell scored both goals for Southwest and Andy Mitbo had a strong game in goal. Amazingly enough, the team was only using ten players in the second half (eleven is the legal number of soccer players, although less may be used if necessary). Other strong players for the team were Jef Paguyo, Jeff Fitzgerald, and Phung Vo. Mike Mills gives It all he's got. 56 You die buddy. Jcf Paguyo winds up a tough work-out with some stretches. Something to be proud of his year's S.W. girl's soccer was a high scoring, energetic, well structured team. Every' individual contributed to the best of their ability to achieve the final rank of second in the city. In conference games, the girls were defeated only by Washburn, and were proud to tie their rivals in the second game. The team had great depth. Every player contributed both offensively and defensively. Every player either scored a goal or had an assist. This talent was evident in the high scores of every game. The underclassmen showed great potential. At the start of the season, the team placed well in the time trials. They swan many meets, greatly defeating the opposing teams. They were undefeated until they matched up with the South Tigers. The South team consisted of about 40 swimmers. The team was defeated by South twice, putting them in 2nd place in City Conference. The team was lead by captains Jason Jaglo and Xander Blakely. The team also had two sensational foreign exchange students. They were Abe Hernandez and Alex Dor-moi. The two helped the team greatly. The team will also be losing ten seniors next year. The juniors included Rachel Rochford, Jenny Plummer, Hilary Ves-ledahl, and Sarah Falk. At a tournament held in Elk River, Mn., the team took first place. They received a first place trophy. The team also clinched the city conference championship. Over-all, the team lead a strong season. Next year, though, it will be a different story. The team was led by such wonder-seniors as Peter Moran. Ben Lander, Dana Carlson, and Erin Sjoquist. Other seniors include Desiree Ducharme, Anna-Carin Lindberg, Annette Dam, Chris Herzberg. The southwest basketball team is having a successful year. They will finish third in the city conference. The team is headed by six seniors and some very talented under classmen. While Paul Roach and Jeff Peterson have taken holding the team together, tight of the teams losses have come to teams rated in the top twenty in the state. The team lost a heartbreaker to the number one ranked team north high in the final last minutes of the game. There are high hopes for a successful region and possibly a state tournament showing. 74 Jeff Peterson Hey . One highlight of the year was in mid December when they beat the defending city champs at florth high in 67-66 overtime victory. This year was lead by three strong seniors, five talented juniors, and a young but promising sophomore. They also received help from their advisor Kris Forberg. Because of the lack of pep fests this year, the Lakerettes didn't have much of a chance to strut their stuff to the entire school, unless you saw them at basketball or hockey games. They prepared for the state Danceline Competition which was held on Feb. 6 at the Mpls. Auditorium.
