Groups started coming around 9:00 and stayed until 11:30. The Student Council did a good job of making our first dance a real blast. HOMECOMING DANCE We found some creative new means of transportation this year.â This year's Homecoming Dance didn't go over as big as it has over the past years. Some people complained about the selection of music and the long line for pictures. However, it was a lot of fun and all who did come had a good time. We all dressed up and it was a fitting end to the goofy clothing of spirit week. 13 HOMECOMING PEPFEST FiooJists in the jello eofng contest. Duncan Chase. Curtis Anderson, and Fondre Lovng Desmond Wild lived up to their name CORONATION A tearful Kristm receives the crown Future king and queen? CORONATION n. Ceremony of investing a sovereign or his consort with the crown. Thursday evening we crowned Queen Kristen and King James. The stage was elaborate with fountains, lights and the royal mum plants. Susan Falk and Katie Nelson were most dignified as the evening's emcees. The program was kicked-off with the presentation of our Junior. Sophomore and Freshman attendents. Music and entertainment were provided by the Southwest Jazz Band. The House Rockers, 955 and our own Amy Young. Our returning 1985 Queen Laura and King Jeff carried out the honors and kept us on the edge of our seats with suspense. Thunderous applause was given in honor of the new 1986 Homecoming Court!! Everyone had a good laugh when King James good-naturedly picked -off 3 mums, while escorting Queen Kristen down the stairs. The Miflers had racked up a five-year, fifty-one game un- beaten streak in the city-conference. The Indians put a lot of heart into their first game with Washburn but came up short, losing in a three-to-zero battle. Southwest went on to beat Washburn in the next game by a come true for the coaches and players alike. Word of the victory spread to the Star and Tribune os well as USA Today. They were the first generation to come after the 'seamen.' Placing second in the city under South by one loss, they beat Washburn each time they swam against them. The team was helped out by a foreign exchange student, his name was Al Candela and he broke the standing back stroke record of last year with a time of 58:59. Captain Mike Duffy tied the 100 freestyle record with a 51:7. They were led by tri-captains Tim Rozycki. Mike Duffy and Steve Haes. Also there were new additions on the diving team making it much stronger. Late commers John Young, Matt Alford and Justin Fobes helped the team at the end of the season. Right: âHmm. that's rather ugly, isnât it?â The billboard art production was a big success and Patter Hellstrom who was the person in charge of this production thanked us for the kind hospitality we showed her. Patter Hellstrom as well as R. Henderson was very impressed with the students. The team of art students demonstrated intelligence, imagination and a pleasant display of perfectionism toward the assignment. The installation date of the billboard and a possible bus tour will come for those who participated in the project. 131 The Math Team at Southwest provides students with an opportunity to participate in a competitive academic activity while they are learning new mathematics and reviewing topics previously studied. The team meets from November through February and members attend five meets. At a meet, students participate in two individual events and also work together with team members on a team event. These events cover topics that the students have been studying for the past three weeks. The guitar class has given the students a basic organizational concept about guitar. Most of the students entered the class without having any formal musical training. After a very intense two week period with their friendly apple computer, the students had acquired a basis from which to begin. They follow a vigorous syllabus and acquire skills in three basic areas; melody playing, chord playing and execution of musical scales.
