Spirit Week Homecoming Spirit Week began with nerd day. People showed up with checks and plaids. Wednesday was Iowa Farmer Day complete with overalls. Thursday was pajama day people showed up with p.j. '$ slippers, and teddy bears. And Friday was Southwest Spirit Day. we felt there was no way we could lose with spirit everywhere and with plans for our team to wear the purple jerseys for the first time this year. By the time the parade began, it was still rather cool but the sky had cleared and the large crowd from Southwest was ready to help their team Ice The Polars. The parade started at the East end of the football field and progressed around the track ending up in front of the large group from Southwest at Parade Stadium. Football Game The head coach of the football team. Lint Levin, had hoped that we would Ice the Polars. They were wearing the purple jerseys for the first time the day of the game. The band did play and the fans cheered but the upset victory over Southwest was a sad loss. 11 Aloha Dance 12 13 MV MOW Student Council Retreat The Student Council Retreat involved all student council members and staff in recreational and planning activities such as the food drive. And the selling of carnations during the homecoming week. With all of the races and free climbing and other games this we feel set the tone for 1985-1986 student council involvement at Southwest. 16 17 Holiday Dance The Holiday Dance was held Friday December 20. 1985. The fact that it was the last Friday before the Christmas vacation had everyone in a great mood. At about nine o'clock the seniors got the Dance rolling with the freshmen's watching from the sideline. The gym was taken back in time by the spirited Southwest students dressed in 50’s style with greased hair, bobby socks, full skirts and red lipstick. Thanks to the Senior Class Council once again this year for putting up the fabulous 50's dance. 22 50's Dance Vietnamese New Year The Vietnamese use both the gregorian (Western) and the lunar calendar (based on the movement of the moon). Usually, all daily businesses are conducted according to the Western calendar. This year, the New Years Day will come on the 9th of February. 1986. It is obviojs this year's season will not be remembered for wins and loses. However, attitudes such as, never give up , teamwork and sticktoitiveness were learned in full measure. There were many lessons learned by the players that will never be forgotten. This year's girl's soccer team posted the best record in the team's history, losing only one game to Washburn and one to Regina. The team's spirit and enthusiasm remained exceptionally high throughout the season. In addition to the coaching of Big A.D. ” Hargreaves and Stan the Man Fure. moral was kept alive through outstanding goal tending by Anne Swanson, and the excellent support of the captains. Although the varsity team is losing nine seniors this year, the J. V. team has many promising players. Hopefully, the winning streak will continue next year. TP-ing J.V. boys .. For the fourth straight year we made it to the regional finals. We had enough skill to win, but it turned out in the end that we lacked experience. This year the girls Cross Country had a very successful year. The girls were first place in City Dual, First place in City. Runner up at region which had the whole team excited for going to state. Individual stars were: Jamie Arndt. Noelle Stuhr. Lisa Priyatel and Laura Arndt. All four girls were named to the all city team. In the individual city tournament Jamie Arndt was the first in singles and Noelle Stuhr was second. In doubles Lisa Priyatel and Laura Arndt came in first. David Webster The wrestling team went thru a building season that had only 2 seniors. 3 Juniors. 7 Sophomores. I Freshman wrestling most of the Varsity season. They wrestled a tough schedule with 3 of their opponents being in the State Team Tournaments. Eric Nyenhuis was most valuable he was 18-5-1. Aaron Martin was most improved he was 16-6. Our Varsity XO Medley relay team set a new conference record of I.-59.6. It was made up of Liza Bates. Kate Strcitz. Krista Strohoffcr and Heather Stoebner. There was an exciting victory over the Washburn swim team to boost morale! Many people did well at the Region meet, where our diver Jessica Blagen placed twelfth in the finals. The girls' gymnastics team had a great season this year, their only tough competitor being Washburn. The Junior Varsity were terrific. winning all but one meet. Gone from last year's championship team were all six defensemen and a host of fast, high scoring forwards. Coach Jim Baxter used the outstanding goal tending of co-capt David Hackley and the solid defense of converted forward co-capt Mark Bonin along with the many new comers to build a good defensve 52 Hockey club. However they saw their try for their 25th conference with in a row stopped by Roosevelt in a 1-0 loss. Senior co-capts David Hackley and Mark Bonin were named to the all conference team and soph. We started fast and had a slump in the middle of the season but won our last 2 games to finish with an overall record of 9 wins and 7 losses and 3rd place in the city. The leading scorer was Traci Nash. Toni Kotchever and Debbie Baier were close behind. Final record 9 wins 7 losses. 7-5 conference, 3rd in conference. S8 The Southwest Cross Country Ski teams were reunited again in late fall to begin a rigorous dry land training schedule to prepare for the day that the soft fluffy stuff would come. Luckily, the snow hit Minnesota quite early and we were soon mastering our uphill and downhill techniques in preparation for the City races. Everybody worked hard to make both the boys and girls teams a strong force in the City's region. 59 Girls Track Spring Sports The 1985 Girls Track team had a very successful year. The team was helped out by the tri-captains Sarah Birklid. Kris Birklid and Linda Lynch. The season was at its best when the girls ran against Washburn and North. The girls were at the ST. Louis Park Invitational on a Saturday when a very bad storm delayed the meet by hours after hours. But even though the girls wre drenched and very cold it was still a memorable day for them all. Boys Track The Boys 1985 Track team opened with new Head Coach Steve Gerber and Assistant Steve La sly. They were helped by Paul Hall and Dan Kozmoski. It was a Young team that swept the Sophomore Championships by over 50 points, The season was highlighted with a win over rival Washburn (oldest dual meet series in Mpls). To expand our business (w V.K.) and start manufacturing our own line of matching sheets too. 85 Seniors Sno-Daze See Mom, I told you it's not that coldl Mr. Blizzard Ken Clayton and Miss Snowflake Cyndi Bonde seated in the snow. Sno-Daze fell on Valentines Day, February 14th this year. It was a very cold day but that didn't stop the seniors from having a good time. At about K 40 all the seniors headed down to Pershing Park, and as soon as everyone gathered around King Ken and Queen Cyndi were crowned. The traditional Broom-ball tournament then began and remained the main activity of the day. Room 217 took the title. The putting and jello eating contests were taking place in between. Later on that evening everyone gathered back at school in the gym for the dance. The dance was a success, the floor never got cleared of people dancing. The National Honor Society is set up by the National Association of Secondary Principals. About the 5th week of school, each eligible student for NHS is given an activity sheet that they have to fill out and return. This is done to see whether a candidate is active. Some of the activities NHS will be sponsoring are selling Daisy Grams for the Sadie Hawk in's dance, and a dance later in the year plus many other activities. HS 1S9 Student Council The student council reached many of their goals this year. The food drive competition with other schools in the metropolitan area was a success due to lots of help from the student body. Call 627-2421 Ext. 5327 French Club The French Club had various celebrations and activities during the past year '85-'86. The festivities began with Toussaints (Halloween) on October 31. On November 27 the Harvest Festival (Thanksgiving). December 20. Noel. February 14. St. Valentin. March 21. Paques (Easter) and a picnic in May with all French, German, and Spanish students, these are some of the activities that fol-owed. In April the French Club went to France. While they were there they learned more about the French and their culture, met new people, and made many new friends. Toward the end of the year each French class had an evening banquet at Sofitel or Magic Pan. The German Club had some visitors from Aschaffenberg from March 24-April 14. they were much welcomed by the German students. A trip to Austria and Germany was planned for April and May. The German classes had banquets at Lorelei and The Black Forest. In addition they had a spring picnic and catered class meals. They also went roller skating and visited the New Ulmin. German Club Spanish Club The Spanish Club headed by Senior Saucedo and Senor Caldwell has been active throughout the year. Holding their annual Christmas party, the preparation of Hispanic foods, the breaking of pinatas, dining out at local restraurant, Spanish movies, were just a few of the activities. The group added a fall concert to their seasonal performance scedule in addition to the Holiday. Pop. and Spring Concert. The Choir also was in charge of organizaing and running the Holiday Dance which was a very successful experience. The trip to Florida was wonderful, consisting of singing, suntanning, and sightseeing. June and July saw us on a nineteen day tour of Norway. We had eighteen performances, saw many exciting things, and made lifelong friends. This fall we were part of the Minnesota Vikings 25th anniversary celebration. It was very exciting performing along with the vikings cheerleaders on the field of the Metrodome. We designed a new band uniform that we hope to be wearing on the field in the fall. In addition to hosting the 5th annual Minneapolis band festival, we entered the state music contest for the first time. It was a great yearl performing, seniors we will miss. O Fischlowitz 169 Math League The math team is made up of about 40 students. grades 9-11. who meet twice a week for practice during the months of November. December. January, and February. Southwest is a member of the Minnesota Math League which consists of HO high schools. During an individual event, a student has II minutes to answer 4 questions and during the team event, a team of 8 students work together to answer 6 questions in 10 minutes. Southwest placed first among all the Minneapolis and St. Paul High Schools this year. Their score of 318 total points was 31 points above the second place team. This accomplishment qualified them for the State Tournament for the second year in a row. We participated in tournaments at Mankato East, St. Francis, Wayzata, Stillwater. Coon Rapids, Sibley, and MaCalester College. They also debated in the Metro Debate League with 13 other schools on Wednesdays. The team had 16 members but very little experience. The team was led by sophomores Paul Soucy. Eric Bestrom. and Peter Mason. Timely support from senior Heidi Bolstad, and research by Dan Jacobson were very helpful. Wendy MeHum. 6 Quiz Bowl The southwest quizbowl is an exercise of trivial knowledge and aggressive cannibalism in an attempt to satisfy our need to be consistent winner against people on other teams who have as their goal the total degradation of our team members. Her responsibility will be to develop writing courses for students and in-service programs for teachers in the area of writing. Finalists In The 1986 Competiton For Merit Scholarships Four finalists in the 1986 competition for Merit Scholarships, are from Southwest. About 90percent of the 13,500 be become finalists but the selection of about 5,800 Merit Scholars from among the approximately 13,500 Finalists is now in progress. During March and April, Merit Scholarship offers will be mailed to winners whose principals also will be notified confidentially. In April and early May, NMSC will announce the names of Merit Scholars through the news media.
