Under the direction of Mr. Keith, the committee did a great job of staying with the theme. During the program, former Homecoming Queens were introduced by Jenny Sullivan, who was the M.C. for the evening. We also payed tribute to a former faculty member. Miss Ann Brinley. The talent included a Unicorn Dance performed by some of Vietnamese students. The purpose of the dance was to bring luck to all of those in the audience. Peter Borne sang an original song and the Indianettes danced to Go For It. People showed up with P.J.'s, slippers, and teddy bears. With Tuesday came opposite sex day, guys were all fancied up with dresses, and the girls were decked out in boxers and jerseys. 60's day was next, we showed our spirit with our tie-dyed shirt and jeans, carrying picket signs. Following Wednesday was Hawaiian day, people wore loud shirts, shorts, and grass skirts. Friday purple and white day. Here was a group in purple and white, looking totally out of sight, from purple hair to purple shoes. There was no way we could lose, there was spirit everywhere! GET THE TIGER BY THE TAIL! By the time the parade began, the sky had cleared and the sun was out. Starting from Chowen Ave., the parade progressed throughout the Southwest neighborhood and ended up at the Football field. This year. Mr. Googins was in charge of the parade and the student in charge was Sara Isaac. This year the parade was a huge success____ 11 WE BACKED OUR TRIRF On Friday. October 14. the empty gym began filling with alumni, students from all grades, teachers, and proud parents. An had come to see the pepfest and the talent show. The gym roared with excitement as the 1983 royalty entered. We'l remember hearing “Sincerely. and “She's My Girl. Also the Dynamic Knights on drums, the two dancers, the Unicorn Dance, and Sara Isaac's great job as M.C. The Indianettes performed their traditional Charleston. Most of WITH PURPLE PRIDE FROM THE VICTORY . . . HOMECOMING '83 A TOTAL VICTORY!! For the first time in four years Southwest won their Homecoming football game. The Indians came back from a 6-0 first quarter deficit with touchdowns from G. Nyenhuis, P. Kinseila and P. Kauth, who also led the defense with eight unassisted tackles. The offensive attack was led by Captain Paul Kinseila with 105 yards. 98, 0NIIAIOO3IAIOH ‘ ' 30NVO AdOiOIA 3H1 Ol '' ' WELCOME DANCE The Welcome dance was a first. It was the first dance of the year, and was the first Southwest dance to have video screens. People at the dance were as warm and wildly dressed as any Hawaiian natives. Groups started coming around nine, and stayed until eleven. The Student Council did a good job of making our Welcome Dance fun. SADIE SCENES Sadie Hawkins-the Hill-Billy dance was, well, not so Hill-Billy. The rebellious seniors showed up as Hawaiians wearing flowery shirts and sunglasses. The repetitious music did not stop anyone from dancing a lot and having a good time. On their way out, couples could pick up paper pumpkins with their names on them, which were pasted on the wall. 17 BREAK DANCE A colorful Christmas tree, Santa Claus passing out candies, and a decorated gym all set the mood for the holiday fun. Sponsored by the Student Council, the dance featured two alumni as D.J.'s. Though the music was limited to Prince, Rick James and Michael Jack-son, a good time was had by all. The spotlight closed in on Kris Hansen and Chris May due to the plotting and manipulations of a few friends ... The general feeling was that the dance was a good way to start off the holiday break......... LET'S GO TO THE HOP ... “And they coiled It puppy love “I found my thrills .. “Put you heod on my shoulder, whsper in my eor ... “Go oheod moke my day ... The day of the 50's Dance was filled with the mood of the .times. With a select few dressed m 50's outfits during the day. the real fun began at lunch With an excellent performance each lunch period by the Jazz Band, members of the staff and some students showed all how to dance. Thanks to Chris Yueill. it was a success The mood was carried on to the dance that night with WWTC providing the music Arrangements for the dance were made by Senior Council members Art Punyko. Irit Kanv and Jenny Sullivan The dance was a smash, and all the money made was used to pay for graduation ceremonies the spring. ’ Y -ifciJ Sue Hal and Andy Hubbei take first ploce in the twist competition. !4« INDIANETTES FIRST ROW: Co-Captain Reba Brown. Although there was a problem with repetition of football dances (i.e. Human Touch), they tried something new and emerged to win Stout Competition by doing the Charleston. Also this year, they showed their spirit by dancing at a soccer game, at many basketball games, and cheering the other teams on to victory. These fine organizations were 77 members strong, with nearly 50% of the members being Freshmen and Sophomores, ensuring the strength of the bands for next year. The Bands for the school year '83-'84 performed 4 concerts with much success. One of the concerts was especially important to the members of the Bands because it was broadcast over the Minneapolis Public Schools Radio Station KBEM. Everyday in the halls there seemed to be the sound of angelic voices. This beautiful sound comes from room ill. the choir room. Under the direction of Mr. Antholz. the choir this year was very successful. To all it was more than just another class or hour to fill. It involves teamwork and dedication, neither of which is required in other classes to such an extent. However, the effort is well rewarded. Each year, the choir goes on a concert tour. This year we decided on New Orleans and Nashvile. We also share other moments together outside the classroom such as concerts and little ‘gatherings'. The whole backbone of the choir is “Mr. A.” and we would just like to say how much we appreciate him for all he does! We love ya!! 26 — Cho FRONT ROW: C. Holman. I. Lewis. A. Robb. K Jackson. M. The advisor, Mrs. Britt Lundgren, has quite a bit ofexperience overseeing the production of many yearbooks. Even she confesses to the success of the 1983 84 Wogistanian. They included such things as a dinner at 'Garcias' and a party at Senor Saucedo's house. The Spanish students were fortunate enough this year to meet and talk to native Spanish speakers who came to visit in the states and studied at Southwest. A trip to Spain under the supervision of Senor Saucedo was offered to those who were interested and could afford to 90. The German Club is headed by Herr Hargreaves and Frau Haga. This year the members of the club had meals in class, went to German movies at the Uptown Theater, the U of M, and St. Catherine's. Fifteen students from Aschoff enburg in Germany came to visit, and stayed with German Club host families. During their stay, special trips were taken around the Twin City area and to Duluth. The students went rollerskating and also to a soccer match at the Metrodome between the Cosmos and the Strikers. A reception was held at the mayor's office before the German visitors left. Our French Club led by Monsieur Oliver and Madame Haga was very active throughout the year. The students did such things as played a bingo game at halloween. made French Valentines for Valentine's day and had an easter egg hunt using clues in French. A tasty tradition with Mr. Oliver is an annual French dinner at the Hotel Sofitel which was not forgotten this year. The club members also celebrated foreign language month by going to the Minnesota Zoo and listening to presentations given in French. A joined picnic with the Spanish and German clubs completed the year. Like the trips offered in the other languages, there was a trip going to England and France for those fortunate students. Tmmy Hu Most would not quote table tennis as an aggressive sport. Most also don't know that it is. in fact, the world's second biggest sport. The good thing about it is that it can be enjoyed at any level of skill, from after-school addict to champion. As an indoor sport, it has been popular at Southwest. Table tennis calls for speed, agility, alertness, and skill. The team here at Southwest has gone relatively unnoticed over the years, and they have been very successful. After placing second in the state last year, most of the team returned to place first among the Minneapolis High Schools this year. MATH LEAGUE FRONT ROW: Dahn lam. Mr Andersen. FRIENDSHIP CAMP In the early part of December, camp Manokiki on Lake Wiconia was the home of 30 Southwest students for the weekend. 15 American and 15 Vietnamese-Hmong and students from other countries got together to learn and teach each other of their different cultures and lifestyles. With the help of a few caring teachers and advisors, camp turned out to be what they promised. exciting, and fuB of joy for everyone. At first we an were a ittle hesitant and scared, but as the weekend progressed we began to understand one another and respect each other. We liked each other because of ourselves, not the clothes we wore or the color of our skin. Everyone participated in games, sports, workshops and chores. I doro yo',-‘ OF THE SNO-DAZE CRAZE I don't know if that is such a good idea Sno-Daze fell on January 27th this year. Though it was a bit chilly, the sun was out and all seniors were primed for some fun. At about 10:30 all the seniors headed down to Pershing, and as soon as they all arrived King Paul and Queen Wendy were crowned. The broomball tournament began and remained the center of the activities for the rest of the day. With room 219 taking the title, the day was complete and all went home. Later on that evening everyone gathered at St. Thomas for the dance. With Alex Strohoffer and Tom O'Rourke as the d.j.'s the music was enjoyed by all and the dance floor was never empty. Many Senior Council members put in a lot of time and effort towards making the day and night the success it was. A special thanks to their advisor, Mr. Darhl Nelson. John Stuart Mill in this your senior year, numerous studies on secondary schooling have been the focus of national attention. A major consensus among authors of these reports is that standards of excellence must be emphasized. There have been many times, no doubt, when you have felt your teachers have expected too much from you. Prepare for more of the same. Excellence is the watchword today. High levels of achievement are routinely expected by teachers and employers, not to mention parents. Don't be passive or lack confidence when facing a challenge. Take the advantage of doing your own goal-setting; working hard and tending to task; chart your progress. Follow the advice of John Randolph by being active and decisive in future endeavors: ”AH of us have two educations: one which we receive from others; another, the most valuable, which we give ourselves. Patrons — 173 Class of 1984, • No man has earned the right to intellectual ambition until he has learned to lay his course by a star which he has never seen—to dig by the divining rod for springs which he may never reach. In saying this, I point to that which will make your study heroic. For I say to you in all sadness of conviction, that to think great thoughts you must be heroes as well as idealists. Only when you have worked alone — when you have felt around you a black gulf of solitude more isolating than that which surrounds the dying man, and in hope and in despair have trusted to your own unshaken will—then only will you have achieved. —Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes I wish you the best of luck and success in whatever you do- What was hard to bear is sweet to remember.
