Tuesday was Fifties day, and of course with that came poodle skirts and leather jackets. Wednesday was P.J. Day; everyone came decked out in their P.J.’s and teddy bears. Thursday was Unique Day, and it’s just what the name implies, everyone wore something unusual or uniquely different. Last came Friday, Purple and White Day, there was everything from purple hair to purple and white fingernails. Overall everyone showed SPIRIT!! 12 PEPFEST The 1982 Homecoming was a time for old and new traditions ... Coronation the night before the game ... Attendants ... These are the times we remember; times when spirits are up and the school is brought together as a whole. Gelling help from a friend Homecoming Dance The Homecoming Dance, following the theme of “Ice Castles”, climaxed a week of new traditions, yet the old tradition of having a good time remained. New and old faces crowded the floor as couples danced to the jazz band. Photographers were on hand to capture the special evening shared by many. Couples in costumes slowly filtered into the gym ip everything from bumble bees to Christmas trees. Some people danced, some had their pictures taken, some got married, and some just stood and watched. The dance broke up as couples walked arm in arm outside into the cold night. 19 Dave and Maggie flash iheir smiles? Holiday Dance The dance began on Friday at eight. But as usual we all were late. In all the excitement of the contest, overzealous competitor Nathan McKinley eagerly started to grab and devour the burgers of the other contestants. It is possible that Nathan may have also engulfed one of Jon's burgers, but, because of lack of evidence, Jon was declared winner. Nathan placed second in this contest. Once at the center, the group did a series of activities designed to help the students of limited English proficiency and native-born Americans get along better. The group members participated in outdoor sports like volleyball, field hockey, and sledding. They also did various indoor events like dancing, singing. and swimming. These activities were very successful, and by the end of the trip the ESL and native-born kids were laughing and talking together like they'd known each other for years. The students at the camp would like to express their thanks for the use of the facility and the other help they received. Also, they would like to thank the chaperones Mary Mooney. Carolyn Kleinman. The 82-83 Wagistanian staff has changed along with the school mergings. Our staff size and budget have both increased. The staff was made up of people from many different schools, with all of them having many different ideas, so we had to get organized and start work. We sold donuts on tally day and all those bags of jellybeans to raise money. There were a lot of people with no yearbook experience, but with the help of the editors and section leaders, we made the Wago very successful. 70 — Wagistanian Wagistanian Advisors .....Britt Lundgren, Russ Henderson Editors-in-Chief .. The Spanish Club is open to those students who are studing the language and enjoy the Spanish culture. The Spanish Club’s many activities include attending Spanish movies, building and breaking pinatas, learning Spanish songs and dances, preparing Hispanic foods, having spring picnics, going to Hispanic res-taunts, attending foreign language career festivals, and become Spanish tour guides at the Minnesota Zoo. Spanish Club Languages — 73 French Club Southwest’s French Club is headed by Mr. Fredrick Oliver who’s the French teacher here at Southwest. The French Club is open to those students who are studing the language and enjoy the French culture. The French club is a very active group. They have spon-sered a successful fund raiser during the year to help pay for their various outings and activities. Though the yearly trip is not spon-sered through the French Club, some students save their money earned by the fund raisers to pay for their trip to France. Parlez-vous Francais? 74 _ Languages German Club AFS This year’s German Club was very active. Their big fundraiser this year was selling Happenings books, in which a $2,000 profit was obtained. In October the club went to St. Croix, Wisconsin, hiking and eating. They spent several November evenings watching German language films. More of their activities included a sleigh ride party and a ski trip to Indian Head mountain in Michigan. The German Club banquet was held at the Black Forest Inn, and finally in June, 15 students from Southwest, will travel to Aschaffenburg, Germany on an exchange program. Club AFS has been very active in the past, and from it’s overwelming success, will be in the future as well, AFS president this year is Jenny Guyer. She, just this last summer visited the Dominican Republic - and enjoyed it tremendously! This years AFS exchange student is Silka Schauer, from West Germany. AFS sponsers numerous fundraisers throughout the year to pay for various activities such as horseback riding and rollerskating. Some of the money used from the fund raisers will help finance student trips across the sea. Another exchange student at Southwest is Susumu Koyama. Bon Voyage! AFS — 75 Presenting the new Southwest Bands .... “THE BEST IS YET TO COME.” This year was a year of rebuilding for Mr. Keith and the Southwest Bands. Although the enrollment for the first trimester was not what Mr. Keith had expected, he feels that with the dedication and enthusisam that the group has shown, great things are in store for the future. This year’s Marching Band began practicing in the middle of August. They participated in many activities including the parade at the Minnesota State Fair, the annual football game at Parade Stadium. and in the Homecoming Parade. The Concert Band, along with the other bands at Southwest, played their annual Fall and Winter concerts with great success. Also this year we welcomed a Jazz Band here at Southwest Concert Band. With the addition of students from West and Central High Schools, the Southwest Student Council is full of many new ideas. Each school has brought suggestions for dances, fundraisers, etc. which will make the new Southwest even better. A lot of hard work has gone into first, the forming of the Student Council and second, the actual involvement of students. A transition committee was put together this summer consisting of four Southwest students and four West students. They met to decide on using parliamentary procedure during meetings, using the precinct method of electing students to the Council, and in general how to make the joining of the schools run smoothly with little problem. Once underway, officers were elected and projects and duties were discussed. So far this year the Council has planned the Sadie Hawkins’ Dance along with the Dance Committee, opened a student parking lot, allowed music to be played in the lunchroom, and started student P.A. announcers. Some fundraisers include the selling of student directories and the chore project. Not to say that there haven’t been problems, but we’ve overcome them for the most part to produce a well organized decision-making body. dll in favor'... motion stands... 78 — Student Council Iraki. ? Although the number of students has decreased since the first year, it hasn’t seemed to effect the performance of the team. The first year they placed first in their conference, the second year, second place, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens this year! Unfortunately last year KSTP dropped the Quiz bowl show from its broadcast format. In place of this, the team has been invited to participate in two separate tournaments sponsored by two other high schools. The members of the team are very talented and have a diverse range of knowledge. The team should be a strong competitor, and do very well this season. Standing: Jocllyn Ackerman. Valts Treibergs. Education is a process that changes the learner.” George B. Leonard Education and Ecstasy Mr. Leonard is commenting upon the dynamics of learning. Progress and development are increased by the modification and refinement of behavior and perspective; in other words, the learner is changed. The process of change has been a poignant experience for this year’s graduate. The school reorganization of 1982 added the dimension of new surroundings for some and the exposure to a greater mix of teachers and classmates for all. Congratulations are due to you seniors upon your commencement from Southwest. I also want to acknowledge the cooperation and leadership you, as upperclassmen, provided during a transition year.
