More important than the ■'right clothes, the perfect haircut or the newest car ts the need v e all have for friendship. When you stop and think about it. we choose our friends on the basis of what's on the inside, not the outside. We single a special someone out of the crowd because of what shines from within. Introduction — 3 Today is what I dreamed of yesterday. And tomorrow is where my dreams lie from today. Sometimes I think I'd do things in a different way if I’d know what tomorrow’d bring yesterday. But I guess as I look back and weigh my memories, the pleasures were much greater than the pain, no use worrying about yesterday we can’t go back and live those days again. The nice thing we have though is the remembering, the way we acted and those crazy things we did. But I can still dream of what I'll be doing in my tomorrows while enjoying memories of things I did. Nancy Rose Class of 81’ 6 — Introduction We measure the passing ot time in terms ot what time brings to us. And so, even the seemingVj unimportant events in our lives are never rea y forgotten — we use them as reference points and stopping places. Happenings are grouped into t me frames such as “right after Sadie or “a tew da s before my birthday” or “about the same time met you.” Thoughts and memories revolve around the o d and the new. Minnesota. This weekend was designed to give the participants a chance to understand other cultures and to meet friends of different nationalities away from school. They worked on various activities and played many ice-breaker” type games. This is the third year that this camp has been held and it has proven to be very successful. Guillermo Moreno Chuc Mung Nam Moi A Kung Fu Demonstration The Lunar New Year is celebrated by the Chinese and the Vietnamese people either at the end of January or in mid February. It was celebrated here at Southwest on February 5th. For the Vietnamese. Tet is the most important and great celebration of the year. Government offices usually close for at least three days and private businesses often longer. Schools close for two weeks and the farmers may have up to three months vacation because this is the time when the rice crops have been transplanted and people can relax until the next harvest. Markets and shops remain closed until a ‘good prosperous day' is indicated on the calendar. Burgers and pie to eat, broomball to play. Angus was crowned king, but he wasn't alone. Queen Caroline sprawled beside him upon her snowy throne. The day was soon over, it had been filled with fun. Patti and Joe had eaten a pie and trophies they'd won. Chuck ate twelve burgers and became a star, the prize winning girl ate eleven, Char. The mess was cleaned up, we departed the park, to prepare for the dance that took place after dark. Nine o-clock was when it began, till midnight is when it ran. The seniors danced and stomped their feet on stage Nick and Mike controlled the beat. Sno-day was complete, perfect in every way, But it didn't snow until the next day!! Above: Where's the barf pail? It’s a fast moving game that requires lots of concentration and strategy. A Table Tennis demonstration in the lunchroom during lunch was the promotional gimmick that got many people to come out for the team. The team held practices once a week and had regular Table Tennis Tournaments. Computer Club Tabie Tennis — 81 Arrow Top row from left to right: Anne Leary. Lato Vida!, Steve Peterson. Bob Granvtn. My friends and I do everything together as a bunch, thats how the upperclassmen know we’re sophs (or at least that is my hunch.) We arrive places earliest, and never stay very late. Jean Paul Sartre Seniors, you are completing a phase of a continuous process in your personal development. Formal education, schooling if you will, is important and we join with your parents, relatives and friends in extending congratulations to you upon completing requirements for graduation at Southwest. As you begin experiences beyond high school — college, vocational school, volunteer services, the armed forces, or full-time work — don't underestimate your talents and abilities. Don’t be timid in seeking opportunities, nor hesitant at taking the advantage. Keep in mind the totality of you that Sartre is writing about: there is the matter of what you have left to accomplish, and of what you might accomplish. Best wishes for a happy and successful future. It all started in 1979 on November 4th when Iranian Military students sewed the U.S. Embassy in Teheran. Originally some 90 people were held, but by November 20th, 1979,53 remained. (Later some non-Americans and Blacks and Women were released). After that many economic sanctions against Iran and many setbacks took place; one of which happened on April 24. 1980. when a rescue mission was attempted. The rescue attempt was aborted when two helicopters crashed and eight men were killed. Then on July 11th, one of the 53 Hostages-Richard Queen- was released because of his need for better medical attention. Finally, after many hours of negotiations through Algeria, an agreement with Iran was worked out. After 444 days of anxious waiting the remaining 52 American Hostages were coming home! The entire country turned into one big yellow ribbon of welcoming open arms. Someone even tied a yellow ribbon around the Foshay Tower! Thousands of people went to the Military base of West Point to welcome home the returning former Hostages. Never did the former Hostages think that such a welcome would await them! New York City threw a ticker tape parade for them, something that hadn’t been done since the Astronauts returned from the moon in 1969. The former Hostages quickly fell back into the routine of daily living, but I'm sure the scars will remain with them for a long time to come. The whole world mourned on December 8th when the news of the murder of ex Beatle John Lennon was heard. Thousands of people held vigils all over the world for him. The gossip magazines came out with all sorts of scandals about him and his record sales soared. This year of 1980 showed a turbulent Middle East. Iran and Iraq were at war with each other over a border dispute. Iraq invaded Iran to try and get back land that Iran took in the '60's. Eventually both countries ran out of supplies and it stands now as a stalemate. In this year-1980- Poland had an internal struggle going on. The Industrial workers wanted a union, and the Polish Communist government gave them one called Solidarity. The Farm workers now want a union. The government, however was reluctant to give them one, and so the workers are striking and the government is threatening and the country is in turmoil. On January 11th, 1981. the State Department calculated that there are now 165 Independent Nations. At the end of WW1I. the State Department counted 70 of these nations. This figure depends however, on how independence is defined. The State Department lists the smallest independent nation as Tuvalu m the South Pacific which has between 6.000 and 7.000 people, and a total area of 26 square miles. Monaco is much smaller area wise (less than one square mile), but has a population of 26,000 people. The American Auto Industry is struggling to keep up with the foreign auto industries. In 1980 for the first time in a long time the auto industry lost money. This was due to the fact that the U.S. is buying more foreign cars due to their higher gas mileage and better quality. On June 9th, 1980, comedian Richard Pryor was severely burned in his home in California. His accident was thought to be drug related. He was given only a 50-50 chance for surviving. His condition gradually improved, and after many skin grafts and plastic surgery, he is almost fully recovered. Running was another fad that has been popular for a few years and was so again this year. Running has become the in-thmg to do. It is considered very vogue to be a logger and the clothing industry has had a field day with all of the new outfits and running shoes that people are buying. During the Spring and Summer of 1980, the United States became infiltrated with refugees from Cuba. President Carter allowed them into the country where they were then moved to refugee camps. To start with, we had many hopeful candidates; among whom were Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Ed Kennedy, John Anderson, and George Bush. After the primaries were held, however, our choice of candidates was limited to a few; mainly Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and John Anderson. The race for President was expected to be very close between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, but President Carter con-ceeded the race to Reagan early in the evening. The paper called Reagan’s victory a 'landslide'. The Republicans had won over the Democrats. 1980 was the year of the hit TV show Dallas and the question: Who Shot J.R. Ewing? People placed bets on who his assassin was. There were 'J.R. for President' buttons and 'I shot J.R.' bumper stickers. J.R. (Larry Hagman) himself even came out with one dollar bills with no, not Washington's picture, but J.R.’s picture on them. Everyone's curiosity was further prolonged by the Actor's Strike. Finally, however, on November 21st. millions of people tuned into see who had shot him. It turned out to be Kristen Sheppard, J.R.'s secretary and lover. The whole country shook on May 18th when Mount St. Helen's volcano erupted in Washington. It was to be only the first of several eruptions. This first explosion blew away 1 Vi cubic miles of material and sprinkled ash on everything for miles around. The weird temperature variations (57 degrees in Minnesota and below freezing in Florida) of this past winter were blamed on these eruptions. One of the big fads from 1980 was the irresistible Miss Piggy. She became as popular as Bo Derek, and many people wanted Miss Piggy to be up for an Oscar for her performance in ‘The Muppet Movie'. On January 9th. 1981, Abigail Van Buren celebrated her 25th anniversary of writing her Dear Abby column. STATE This year, once again, the Minnesota Vikings won their Central Division title with a record of 9-7. In the first round playoffs the Vikings played against the Philadelphia Eagles, but lost 31-16 thereby blowing their chance to play in the Superbowl. In Minnesota this school year. Albert Quie was governor. Donald Fraser was the mayor of Minneapolis, George Lattimer. the mayor of St. Paul. David Durenberger and Rudy Boschwitz represented our state in the Senate. In the summer of 1980, the Minneapolis Star and Tribune went on strike, and for 27 days we were virtually without a newspaper. Many people were lost without any Dear Abby or comic strips to read, and bird cage owners were left without anything to insulate the bottom of their cages. Star Survey BEST ALBUM 1.
