A continuous flow of water, mood follows mood In rapid succession. A stream reflects upside-down distorted images; ripples and currents melt trees into the sky. causing clown's interpretation of reality. A child's world of simplicity and laughter. A lake is a broadened stream, its surface allows an even composure from shore to shore; smooth and placid, or full of turbulent waves, it experiences and knows all that surrounds it. A lake reflects, when calm, an almost perfect image of the shore-buildings, trees, lights; upside-down but easily righted in the mind. Rough waters cause disfigured images, fragments juxtaposed by waves. A world of growth and adjustment. We strive to look and think, to reflect upon the images of life, to internalize them, sort them out, and to reflect them to others. We grope for an understanding of reality, slowly progressing towards, but never reaching mirror perfect reflections of reality. Sharon Strobel Class of 1980 4 Introduction Introduciion 5 REFLECTIONS Reflections of the days gone by On the future's path your lives do lie Someday you'll see the memories fly On wings of gold and silver. Like a river of time reflections flow. And through the years they begin to grow. Then like the moon on the water they glow With a spirit as free as the wind. They'll always be there in your heart Even when you're set apart From the people and places who were there At the start. When your life was young and free. Kathy Pett 6 Introduction Introduction ? Lazy days in the sun are gone. Now hustle or bustle, we're on the run. We gathered here to have some fun. The first dance of the year. Over 400 were here. Everyone got in the groove. Disco was the way to move. The computer matched us up right. The D.J. worked all night. And the strobe-lights made it out-a-sight The doors locked at nine. Quick, don't be left behind. tu$ Welcome Dance 16 Students swing at Sadie On the eve of November 17th a motley crowd gathered in the Southwest gym to celebrate the annual Sadie Hawkins dance. Present at the dance were cowboys, farmers, doctors, nurses, punk rockers, killerbees, and everything inbetween. Mr. Williams presided as the marrying Sam to hitch couples. Sheriffs were at hand to keep order by arresting any male not accompanied by their escorts. Summed up. Sadie was a great time for everyone involved. BUSTEDI We're rough and tough and know our stuff ✓ Sac e Hawkins 17 The 50 's Dance When the clock struck nine they were ready to bop, got in a line and did the Bunny Hop ... January 25th was the night to boogie at the Annual 50's Sock Hop. The gym was ringing with vintage music from the era. They strofled, twisted and jitterbugged the night away. Mary Jo and Keith bent their backs to the limit at the limbo contest. When the clock struck twelve, the dance was done, but it was really lots of fun. Even if those days are gone, the 50's spirit still lives on BELOW: The BoWies 18 50's Dar ce Here Comes The Sun In one short month, 31 students with very little rehersol or direction time threw together a brillant rendition of Here Comes The Sun; a superb collection of short stories and folktales. Playing to a quasi-full house the students gave command performances to enthusiastic audiences. The orchestrated accompaniment was well synchronized with every subtle movement. Such excellence added dimension that electrified the air and dramatically set the atmosphere. ✓ Cindi Anderson Mary Anderson Lisa Chombrelin Kim Crisler Shawna Daly Terry Daly Steve Henderickson Dave Kallas CAST Laurie Lindell Richard Marlin Marilyn Murray Hieu Nguyen Anne Nichols Steve Press Wes Ray Anna Santoes Steve Sheehan Peter Sheldon John Sorenson Paul Toman Joe White David Whitinger Stage Managers: Lee Skaalrud, Rich Rummel Light-Ing: Lee Skaalrud Costumes: Julie Kuhlman, Elaine Wol-dorsky Publicity: Julie Kuhlman, Bill Evanson-guitar, John Davidson-bass, Bob PhiSpp-Percussion, David Chi-solm-flute. For the Vietnamese. Tet is the most important and greatest celebration of the year regardless of religious background. Government ofices usually close for at least three days and private enterprises often close for a longer period. There is no school for a fortnight and in the countryside, farmers may have up to three months of vacation as this is the time when rice has been transplanted and people can relax till the next harvest. Markets and shops remain closed until a good prosperous day” is indicated on the calendar. There is a many thousand year calendar publishing suggested days for current events like: engagements, marriages, funerals, movings. sellings, buyings, construction, business engagements, shop openings, etc. that most people, especially business people, would consult whenever a project is about to materialize. The Lunar Calendar is divided into cycles of twelve years, each represented by an animal which may influence the fortune of the person who is born under its sign. Following are the twelve signs of the lunar horoscope: the Mouse, the Water Buffalo, the Tiger, the Cat, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog, and the Pig. 1980 is the year of the Goat. Next year will be the year of the Monkey. Tet is time for family gatherings. Members of the extended family (great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, and children) get together to commemorate their ancestors, and wish each other a happy, prosperous new year. It is also time for visiting friends and relatives. For the individual, Tet means lots of fun and entertainment, plenty of good food and beautiful new clothes. We found that people dressed to suit their lifestyles. The acceptable afire would be a pair of jeans, a pair of tennis shoes, and a sweater. This year velour and natural fibers were in. along with clothes with designer names on them. Clothing styles went to a more unisex look, for instance; the peter pan collar and clogs. Ski apparel such as down gloves and jackets are more popular then last year. People are wearing more jewelry such as watches, class rings and earrings Patches are also popular ranging from athletic teams to the rrwiitary. T-shirts with names of teams and camps on them were also common. In general, student's dressware at Southwest was basic and casual. But, the only time that is certainly yours is now. Now, therefore, is the time to speak words of friendship and appreciation, to perform generous deeds, and to sacrifice in the service of high ideals. Now is the time to express the noble part of your character. Do the worthy things which you have postponed. Use your strength and intellect to enrich the less fortunate. If you understand the present and act with purpose, you will never need to worry about what the future has in store for you. Byron J.
