Text from Pages 1 - 170 of the 1979 volume:

SSKWSSSSYS WE ARE ALL STARS with our own tight passing through moments tasting a kiss holding a child we lay on the earth our eyes in the sky. You and I pass through each other on the way to our own suns. You pause brush my skin with your papers pencils hair humming a tune skipping by. Dreams come to us in high school of graduation of money of love of time of children of houses and cars back seats and Saturday nights-. We pause for different beats to teach, to learn to fry a hamburger to take out the garbage news or doctor a hole in the ground feeding our minds on different mushrooms we tarnish in the salt winds. But we are stars in the eyes of the universe force on the earth of breath and blood. Through the days and nights Look at me! I amT' we say as you and I walk from the earth to the sky. We pick up our shine and we are all stars. Dennis Debe 78 3 Everybody is a sunrise A glowing mass to radiate on those around. We all have the power to warm and lighten. But is it that we screen our rays with dark tints of hatred and jealousy? Break through! Everybody is a lyric A single word in our melody of life, we are the phrases of a song, universal, but still unsung. Is it that we arc afraid of singing in a foreign key? Harmonize! Everybody is an emerald So beautiful and unique with their own qualities and talents, dazzling and intense to watch and touch. Yet is it that too many times we - wish we were rubies? Polish yourself! Everybody is a star A primadona on the marquis of your dreams, we may achieve and expand with each character we portray. Yet is it that we are too quick to take a bow? Rehearse! Liz Winstcad’78 4 5 Inside your head between your cars If you could see yourself you would notice the light bursting forth Sometimes it even slips out but you're afraid and it hardens into wax. Excitement and anticipation filled the hearts of all at Southwest. The gym was decorated for a Victory Dance to follow that night. The program began with a few jokes from emcees Cindy and Steve. While approximately 1,500 people waited anxiously last year’s Quccn-Sarah Swartout- crowned Jackie Kraemer as the 1978 Homacoming Queen. The program was highlighted by cheers, dancing, jokes, singers, a band made up of students from Southwest, jokes, gymnastics, skits and more jokes. 10 FRONT ROW: Mary Dick; Terry Gangclhoff; Lee Ann Cox; Jamie Hauschild; Holly Farnsworth: Julie Deegan. Fans showed excellent school spirit 0 at the game, cheering and throwing confetti. n 14 . . . And We All Are Stars “Double, double, toil and trouble ... What's the difference between Sophie boys and Senior men?” Wild and crazy guy! The Welcome Dance The Welcome Dance is the first dance of the school year — to help it get started right. It’s time to come back to learn how to write. To get up early with all your might! It’s been a good summer and you've socn all the sights. You’ve lazed in the sun and are no longer white. So it’s time for school, to reach like a kite, for ways of achieving higher heights. Grease ” Is The Word January 26, 1979 Southwest students once again beebopped to the sounds of the Fabulous 50’s on January 26, 1979. For this one evening the senior high gym was transported back in time by enthusiastic dancers dressed in authentic 50's style with full skirts, bobby socks, red lipstick, and greased hair. Many of the participants came wearing custom made T-shirts declaring their allegiance to such groups as “The Keg Killers” and “The Bonified Hunters . Avid rockers danced to the strains of “Rock Around the Clock” and “The Stroll”. The dance was well attcndcd-400 students, ranging from Freshmen to Seniors, showed up to boogie to the vintage music. Mr. Adam played Justice of the Peace for any couple who wished to get “married.” There were sheriffs to arrest and jail any male caught without a female escort-with a kiss as bail. Costumes this year ranged from the traditional cowboys and farmers to the Jolly Green Giant, the Bride of Frankenstein, and a six-armed spider. The band started out the evening with some “down-home country music and ended it with selections from the Rolling Stones. Sadie was a great success and a lot of fun for everyone involved. This taught the team that they must be ready every week. NORTH: Bucko broke for 50 yards! The run was good enough for a victory on a slippery field. WASBURN: John Oclfkc opened up the game with a 94 yard kickoff return touchdown, and Chuck Simpkins ended the game with a touchdown reception. However, the Indians were defeated 28-21. CENTRAL: Our 8-0 Homecoming victory. Kiss the queen! Everyone is happy. FARMINGTON. The country boys came down hard on the city boys, resulting in a 13-0 loss for the Indians. The team did very well in the Edina Invitational, the City Relays and went undefeated in all dual and triangular meets. Dan Roach set a freshman record in the 800 Meter run. with a record time of 2:07.7. Bill Sullivan and Charles Houts set a 300 Meter intermediate hurdle record at 41.4 and 41.7 respectively. The team did well in post season competition. Dan Roach won the City Sophomore and Scott Redfern placed third in the State AA mile run. Tim Olson. Their opponents also scored 71 runs. Southwest made it to the quarter finals in the state tournament, but they lost to Edison 5-2. The non-conference games Southwest played were against three teams who were rated in the states top ten. These teams were St. Cloud Apollo. Forest Lake, and Moorehead. Snow Day- Feb. 9. 1979- is. traditionally, a day set aside for Seniors to legitimately carouse and be rowdy during the school day. As the mercury dropped down at Pershing field the actitivcs started with the broomball tourney-lots of bruised bones, broken brooms and fun! Moving inside for the coronation of Queen Nancy and King Rich was a welcome relief, as was the White Castle hamburger eating contest. The champ was declared Bill Murtha, with 24 of those taste-bud tempters in his stomach- for awhile. Outside, the pie-eating contest was next with the winner. John Sandvig, inhaling his apple pie to victory. Mr. Barry also joined this activity and is probably still picking the crust out of his ears. Snow Day was capped off with a dance at St. Thomas that night. The whole day was a success as the Class of ’79 could gel together and spend some time for our last year here at Southwest. 73 Mike Groseth: Senior class president. Arrow. Schneider, Ph.D To The Class Of 1979: Whenever you read this page, be reminded that your individual effort is crucial, even indispensable, in the continuing renewal of our democracy. Never be afraid to apply your vision to its unfinished work and try to combine imagination and moral idealism with your responsibility, so that all of our lives are enriched and the national commitment to justice is achieved. The highest reward for your effort is not what you alone receive from it; rather, it is what you become by it. Byron J. Schneider.
