1978 WAGIST AN!AN Southwest Secondary School Minneapolis, Minnesota Good Morning Yesterday; You Wake Up, And Time Has Slipped Away. And Suddenly It’s Hard To Find, The Memories You Left Behind, Remember. Do You Remember The Laughter And The Tears, The Shadows Of Misty Yesteryears? The Good Times And The Bad You’ve Seen, And All The Others In Between, Remember. Do You Remember The Times Of Your Life? Reach Back For The Joy And The Sorrow, Put Them Away In Your Mind; For Memories Are The Time That You Borrow, To Spend When You Get To Tomorrow. Here Comes The Setting Sun; The Seasons Are Passing One By One. So Gather Moments While You May; Collect The Dreams You Dream Today, Remember. Will You Remember The Times Of Your Life? Over the summer the business staff began to solicit contributions, while the senior staff assisted Clair Peterson in setting up appointments for senior portraits When school started we began to schedule pictures of events, organizations, faculty, and teams. After the pictures are taken the film must be developed and printed. The prints are then given to the editors who lay out the pages. In addition to pictures, the editors must obtain copy for most pages We have four deadlines beginning the second week of November and falling about a month apart after that. Final copy goes to the printer February 27. but we continue to check over press proofs through mid-April. We then start all over again with next year's book FACULTY To The Class Of 1978 Byron J. Schneider. Ph.D. While at Southwest, I hope that you have learned that individual effort brings personal reward. Those who wisely use their talents and the resources of the community achieve happiness and success. Do not work for honors or for pay alone. Happiness comes not in the taking and holding, but in doing, striving, building, and serving. Overcome the cowardice that shrinks from new ideas, the laziness that is content with half truths, and the arrogance that thinks it knows all truth. Mr. Bassett and Dr. Pearson have simply exchanged places for the past year. Mr. Bassett even stays in Dr. Pearsons home. Dr. Pearson will be returning next year. Ed Krynski Science Harold Koch Waheed Butt The “All American” science department staff. During the past summer Waheed Butt applied to be a citizen of the United States. On September 28. 1977 in the naturalization ceremony at the Minneapolis Federal Court Building he became a citizen. It was an impressive ceremony for an individual to accept the rights and responsibilities of United States citizenship. The science department is pleased that Waheed made the decision to become naturalized. The courses taught in the science department have an impact on the world — from preparation for a career to better understanding our environment. The background in science will make individuals better U.S. citizens and “citizens” of the world. Left To Right: Tony Angellar. Harold Koch. Meyers Peterson. Harold Strobel. Waheed Butt. Mr. Mielke was a dignified and kind-hearted man. He was a wise counselor. He was never too proud or too haughty to help and to smile with us through the tough problems of life, and mathematics. His death diminishes us. but it also reminds us of the worthwhileness of his personal qualities and of the profession he chose, and in which he excelled. He sought to transmit knowledge. He was an important link in the continuing chain of learning and teaching that binds generation to generation. Man has created many crowns, but the crown of a good name exceeds all others. He who acquires a good name through generosity has enriched himself, and even though life ends, a good name endures in the recollection of friends Hubert H Humphrey 191! 1978 Dear Students at Southwest: • My Minneapolis office just now informed me of your mailgram stating that I won your mock election with 73.7 percent of the vote. That makes me feel so good. I'm still here in the hospital awaiting my release Saturday. I am happy about that but now I feel great. Thank you so much for the confidence you have expressed in me. Now. I hope that the public expresses the same confidence in me on election day so that I can return to the Senate and continue to work for you and all Minnesotans I am especially pleased that your school is interested and concerned enough about good government as to take the time to go through an election process. It is a good educational experience and surely sets standards for good citizenship. You don’t know it. but I have a special spot in my heart for Southwest High School and the Southwest area. I have, over the years, been all over your area from Pershing field to Lakes Harriet and Calhoun. I’m sure that I've even visited with some of you the times that I have stopped into the 50th Street Lund's, or the Red Barn and Dairy Queen in that area. Or', perhaps, the times I havo attended church at Christ the King or the Lake Harriet Methodist Yes. I know your area well and have marvelled at the great Cross Country team that Southwest is able to produce year after year You see. Muriel and I used to have an apartment in your area and still have a number of my staff people who live in the Southwest area. I best finish dictating this letter before my doctors get upset with me. Just know that I appreciate your trust and confidence in me and that your good news on the mock election is better than any medicine Thank you so much Hubert H. Humphrey Southwest students and faculty were again saddened in the Winter of 1978 with the loss of one of the school's original staff members. Herb Warner. Southwest's original guidance counselor passed away February 6. 1978. Throughout Mr. Warner's thirty-four years at Southwest his main interest and concern were the students. He was proud of their accomplishments, listened and tried to help with their problems. and worked endlessly to secure as many possibilities for financial aid as possible Alumni were always wolcome back, and he seldom missed a reunion. With the start of the American Field Service program. Mr Warner became the first advisor and retained his keen interest even after his retirement. He would entertain the students from abroad in his home and on several occasions visited their homes when he was abroad. Faculty and alumni will always remember Herb Warner for his friendly smile, pleasant voice, professional manner, and his pride in Southwest. His enthusiasm and support will be greatly missed, but we can be grateful that his high standards, concern for the Southwest Community, and continuity gained by his years at Southwest, helped to make the school what it is today. 167 Herbert Warner 1906-1978 THESE PAGES DONATED BY THE STUDENT COUNCIL THANK YOU! 168 SPONSORS PORTRAITS v 3821 west fiftieth street minneapolis, 922-2771 MARTY’S BARBER Style Cuts for Ladies and Men 50th France 926-3606 LINHOFF COLOR PHOTO LABORATORY 4402 France Ave. So.
