The Southwest social studies department helps students to accomplish this by educating them in geography, civics, and history. During the sophomore year Southwest students have the opportunity to visit Washington D.C. to see our government in action and to visit some of our country's historical sites. WNSUAGES In today s rapidly shrinking world, an understand,ng of at least one language other than one s native language ,s practically a necess.ty. Helping the student gain this understanding ,s the purpose of the foreign language department. Foreign languages offered are French, German, and Spanish. The faculty is helped in their teaching roles by the modern language laboratories. The English department strives to increase the student s ability to effectively use his language. Included in the study of English are creative writing, various approaches to grammar, and understanding and appreciation of literature.
