Your life . . . reach for something that you love. The pursuit of your personal success is your own goal . . . the ultimate reward — your own happiness. 6 RACUUV - --- Every quest for knowledge must be part of a quest for wisdom. Gerald Vann 7 ASCISPNT PRINCIPAL A cover of a recent bulletin had a full-page picture of a chair with the imprint: Don't just sit there — do something! Whatever a person s profession may be: salesman, doctor, bricklayer, artist, business executive, or housewife, one ingredient is evident in all who are a success — they are in pursuit of a goal because they have pride in themselves and their work. This pursuit is essential if we are going to make this world a better place in which to live. Insofar as there is progress toward this end, the best of yesterday becomes the average of today, and the best of today becomes the average of tomorrow. William C. Phillips PRINCIPAL To the Class of 1967: You have selected pursuit as the interesting theme for your 1967 WAGISTANIAN. The Declaration of Independence states that one of the unalienable rights of man is the pursuit of happiness. This statement implies that happiness is not a state of being which can be accomplished without effort, without conscious pursuit. Happiness is a worthy goal that involves the pursuit of the ingredients of which it is composed. The pursuit of knowledge; the pursuit of a rewarding career; the pursuit of physical and emotional health; the pursuit of opportunities to serve our fellow men; the pursuit of spiritual faith and the appreciation of cultural and worthwhile values are all involved in the pursuit of happiness. My wish for each of you is that this lifetime pursuit has received an inspired beginning at Southwest High School. R. H. Classon 8 MRS. F. MocDONALD L.-R. - MISS M. WALKUP, MRS. M, NAGEL. MRS. D. On October 7, with burning enthusiasm, Southwest Indians burst forth to show great school spirit and strong determination. Thanks to the excellent job done by co-chairmen Linda Williams and Fritz Meili, this year's homecoming was one of the best ever. Tension mounted as 1965 Homecoming Queen Julie weaved between the Queen candidates, and finally crowned the 1966 Homecoming queen — Vickie Tilseth. The program, M.C.'d by Pat Lewis and Roger Johnson, proceeded with talented entertainment. Then it was off to the field to see the Indians first win of the season — turning the South's Tigers into ' kittens, with a score of 9 to 7. The Distributive Education Clubs of America are set up to teach students valuable business and working skills through on-the-job-training. After attending classes in school, students go to work for the rest of the day. Besides receiving pay for their work, they also receive school credits. These students participate in State and National Leadership Conferences during the year. The Southwest division of D.E.C.A. board of directors are: Kim Doelz, Mark Gaddis and Reid Hillsley. Once a week, meetings are held at which time the students plan activities for their group. A new comer to'Southwest this year is Future Pilots of America. Their polished performances at pep fests, basketball and football games, and their two concerts did much to inspire school spirit. These musical accomplishments, however, did not just happen. Behind the scenes, there was plain hard work, tedious tryouts, endless hours of practicing, and before and after school rehearsals. These, added to a dedicated instructor, are the reasons for the band's fine showing in the district and state music competition. QIAGB RAND ROW t: Michele Raen, Roger Gefvert, Candy Clark. With the efficient direction of Coach Al Halley and Captains Jim Solsvig and Bruce Knowles, the boys brought home City and Regional Championships and second place in the State Meet run at the University of Minnesota Golf Course on October 29th. Jim Solsvig was among the first ten runners in the state, and he set a new regional record of 9:48.2 in the City Meet run at Lake Nokomis on October 18th. This proves what determination, teamwork, and practice can do. The boys this year have shown that they had what it takes to be great, and they were. Finishing with a 4-4-1 record, Southwest fought its way to a tie for fourth place in the city conference. Having only seven returning lettermen, this year's team was an excellent example of hard work and determination compensating for lack of experience. Headed by Captain Mark Condon and Coaches Fredrickson and Johnson, our Indians finished strong, winning four out of the last five games. Highlights of the season were the Central game when the Indians out-played the Pioneers but had to settle for a 7-7 tie, and the final game of the season with North when Southwest came from behind to win 30-19. Tom Sathre was chosen the most valuable player. Our all-city player was Kreg Kapitan with Jeff Anderson and Tom Sathre receiving honorable mention Captain Mork Condon and Coach Fredrickson ROW I: 0. Although plagued by ties, the team had four wins and one loss giving it a 4-1 -4 record in January. An impressive performance was given by Brad Shelstad, a sophomore goalie who will probably be a great asset to the team for the coming two years. Tom Sathre, returning all-city wing, and Tom Cronk were cocaptains of the team this year. Other valuable players included Ross Williams, Mark Kohn, Mark Condon, Bill Dale, and Jeff Rotsch.
