TVi wagistanian ’65 southwest high school minneapolis, minnesota Zook to this day. dor it is life. the very life of life. Jn its brief course lie all the vcritics and realities Of your existence. Zhe glory of action. Zhe bliss of growth. Zhe splendor of beauty, dor yesterday is but a dream. And tomorrow is only a vision-. But today well-lived Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, firry tomorrow a vision of hope. Zook well therefore to this day. Such is the salutation of the Pawn. principal To the Class of 1965: This school year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of Southwest High School. In the fall of 19-10 the doors of our school were opened for the first time to the students of our community. The graduating class of 1965, however, prefers not to look backward. The theme for your 1965 Wagistanian properly places the spotlight on the present. “Look to this day . . . For yesterday is but a dream and tomorrow is only a vision . . . Look well, therefore, to this day.” These words from the poem which expresses the theme for this Wagistanian emphasize a very important and vital thought for the person who is interested in a successful and happy life. For it is only as our todays are properly used that life can be useful and meaningful, and our tomorrows bring a more full and satisfying life. My w ish for each of you is that you “look well, therefore, to this day.” R. H. Classon assistant principal To the Class of 1965: Congratulations on the successful completion of three of the best years of your life. You are to be commended for the excellent record which this class has made in the classroom, on the athletic field and as leaders of the school. Do nQt, however, rest on your past achievements. The education which you have received at Southwest is the key to your future success. This success is neither easy to come by nor given out on past achievements. It will come from more good planning and hard work. May success and happiness be your constant companions in all your future endeavors. G. H. The King’s attendants were Tim Browning, Dave Caspcrsen, Don Oliver, and Bob Stanley. After the coronation, seniors displayed feats of skill in the tug of war, three-legged race, sled-pulling, and a broom-ball tournament. The highlight of the afternoon was a rag ball game between the senior boys and faculty men. The game ended in a highly disputed 4-2 victor)’ for the seniors. In the evening, the royal court and their subjects were entertained by the Indianettes during half-time activities of the SW-Vocational basketball game. Following the game, a senior dance was held featuring the music of Ken Kay and the Kambers. “Aw, don’t give me that hash.” Roger Hansen and Tanis Taylor “And for a finale ice shall enter a locker. The 1964-65 student council year was characterized by accomplishment and reform. Although the council relinquished sponsorship of the cooking school, it took on other tasks important to the students. It revamped the Southwest Indian Guidebook. which was outdated by five years, and set up a Fashion Council to interpret the dress code. Again the council sponsored the High School Bowl. Our competition with Washburn was exciting as well as educational. Thirty-seven representatives, elected at large under a revised voting procedure, and ten non-efected members acted as a link between the student body and the administration. Bill Bonneville—Vice-President; Marcia W'attson—Secretary; Dale Spettigue -All-City Representative; John Zimdars—Treasurer; Craig Schwender— President. Decision. no boys’ and girls’ state The Boys' and Cirls’ Stale program is designed to develop good citizens. The individual is made aware of his future civic responsibility through direct participation in a mock gubernatorial election. The nomination of officers, establishment of a platform, and writing of campaign speeches creates a personal awareness of the importance of a well-informed, actively interested citizen in the affairs of our country. Our representatives, Julie Johnson, Sterling Clarren, Terry Coleman, and Marty Fisk, felt the experience offered opportunities of learning with which they had not previously been confronted. The Southwest delegates expressed the opinion that each of their fellow students would benefit from this valuable experience. n.h.s. National Honor Society members, led by President Terry Coleman, had an active year. After the induction of new members, committees were set up to plan social and cultural activities. A successful Santa Anonymous Drive was the year’s first accomplishment. Members of the club are chosen on the basis of their scholarship, service, leadership and character. Membership may not exceed five per cent of the junior class and fifteen per cent of the senior class. Forty-five students were initiated in 1964. An estimated 1200-1300 films were handled by the twelve boys this year. The Camera Club, open to both junior and senior high students, gives members an opportunity to take, develop, and print their own pictures. This year fifteen boys gained valuable experience through this special interest club. Weekly after-school meetings of the Radio Club were designer! to promote amateur radio. New equipment was financed by profits from book cover sales, which also paid for needed repairs. The “Indian Inkers’’, more commonly known as the Graphic Arts Club, celebrated National Printing Week, January 17-23 by-awarding personalized stationery to five students. Hats and badges indicate the students’ level of achievement. First-year men are Printers’ Devils and wear badges. The occupational training program offers four different plans for participating seniors—office, distributive, trade and industrial, or home management training. The students in the program take English, occupational relations, and an elective related to their field of interest. They receive two credits per semester while working about 25 hours a week on an approved job. Part of the program includes membership in the Minnesota Diversified Vocations Club, which helps students investigate and decide upon the job of their choice. Some of the students are able to go on for more formal education by saving the money they earn. The Computer Club, newly formed this year under the direction of Mr. Andersen, gives students who are interested in math an opportunity to learn about computers. The members run the G-15 Digital Computer at the Control Data Educational Center in St. Paul on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The students set up programs for their problems by assigning numerical codes to carry out mathematical operations. This was proven last spring when they earned a top rating in the State Music Contest at the University. Personal appearances have increased their popularity throughout Minneapolis. Such j erformances included concerts in the City Council Chambers. and at Mount Olivet Church, as well as a program for a group of senior citizens. One of the special attractions this year was the “living Christmas tree” at the Christmas Concert. HOW I: II. Hart,II. K. Laanijo, C. — H. WillUmtoo. I.. Zollert. P. NiehoD. M. Fiarher. J. Polenon. Club members labored over plans for the party, which was open to all senior high girls and their dates. Saturday, February 13, 1965, was set as Cupid’s day. The morning was spent decorating the auditorium with red, pink, and white hearts. That evening couples entered the Valentine setting under a large, pink, heart-shaped arch. A glittering globe cast sparkles of light over the dance floor and music by the Nobles filled the room. At 10:30 the spotlight turned on the five anxious Sweetheart Queen candidates. After much suspense, lovely Betsy Spettigue was crowned Queen of Hearts by last year’s queen, Carol Ucko. The new queen’s serenade, “You Are Beautiful,” was sung by Mike Hart. It was a very special evening for all who attended. SWEETHEART ROYALTY: Carolyn Reeves, Vi Dobbins, Queen Betsy, Kathy Bruner, and Nuncy Ncmcr. 'Who is that cute girl over there?' Organization began on the first day of school with the notification of general chairmen Marcia Wattson and Terry Thompson. Committees worked feverishly on plans and promotion during the three short weeks preceding Homecoming Friday. Tension and excitement alternated throughout the day until fervor reached a peak at the afternoon auditorium. Amid tears and cheers. Marcia Wattson was crowned the 1964 Homecoming Queen. Emcees, Bob Potter and Morrie Bender, sparked the program with their portrayals of NSP’s “Homer and Roy”. The traditional Friday evening dance served as a pre-game celebration. Hie Nobles played for a large crowd of spirited students and alumni. The game with Edison, held at Parade Stadium Saturday evening, ended in a 13-7 loss for the Indians. Halftime festivities were highlighted by a parade featuring the senior high float and a performance by the band and Indiancttes.
