Spirit is a spark in the darkness. It is hope. Spirit is a desire to do one’s best. It is initiative. Spirit is the will to fight harder and longer. It is courage. Spirit is the strength of the leader and the faith of the follower. Spirit is the breath of life. The 1964 Wagistanian is dedicated to The Spirit of Southwest High School 4 DEDICATION 5 To the Class of 1964: Congratulations to each graduating senior on achieving an educational goal—graduation from Southwest High School. It is most appropriate at this time to remind you that life is filled with opportunities for education and I hope that each of you will continue to grow in the years ahead using the lessons you have learned here as a foundation for future learning. Good luck (remembering that luck is when preparation meets opportunity) to each of you in all your future work—whatever and wherever it is. Principals To the Graduating Class of 1964: In selecting '’spirit” as the theme for your 1964 Wagistanian, you have pinpointed what I believe to be a magic ingredient of human life. Spirit has much to do with success and happiness in life on the one hand, or failure and unhappiness on the other. We have seen many examples of the results of spirit on the football field. Football coaches sometimes call it desire, others call it enthusiasm. Call it what you will, it is that quality of human life that not only brings victor)- on the athletic field, but is equally potent in bringing success in the classroom or on the job. It is that human quality which attracts friends and which puts zest into all areas of living. Positive spirit results in I will’ which is just as important as IQ in mastering the problems of life. Best wishes to all of you. R. H. Classon 6 MISS BRINLEY is a devoted friend to junior and senior i irls. New Program Combines Learning and Earning The Work Program, under the direction of Mr. Poston, is the first opportunity at Southwest for students to combine education with a part-time job. Over twenty students have taken advantage of this new program. Faculty Council Airs Teachers’ Problems Teachers have their problems, too! The Faculty Council is organized on the same basis as the student council in order to iron out these problems. Each member is elected by the teachers to sene for three semesters. Members include Mr. Classon, Mr. C Wohlford, Miss Donahue, Mr. Williams, Miss Williams, Mr. Dahl, Mrs. Strom, and Mr. Phillips. Students Improve Reading Skills 9 English Is the Basis of Our Education The fundamental skills of English taught at the Junior High level are strengthened in Senior High. This knowledge also serves as a basis for the study of literature. This year a new method of learning, team teaching, was introduced to a group of Southwest juniors. The course concentrated on three areas: Speech, directed by Miss Donahue; discussion, led by Mr. McDonough; and composition, taught by Mrs. Sundin. This is one of the many ways the English Department strives to maintain excellence in its program. Hou- did you eter gel to be a senior?’ ELINOR BOYLAN National Honor Society. After school until 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, class members made campaign materials, danced, and rehearsed skits and speeches for their candidates: Nick Smaby or Jim Luger (President), Denny Anderson or Jay Rovner (Vice President), Francie Johnson or Nancy Beardslee (Secretary), Tom Friberg or Tom Dahlen (Treasurer), Nancy Connolly or Jean Barr)- (Girls’ Sergeant at Arms), and Denny Johnson or Charlie Lieb (Boys’ Sergeant at Arms). Spirited campaigning was completed during first hour on Thursday; then the final balloting began. Friday morning, Mr. Dahle announced the long awaited results. The newly elected officers immediately made plans for the election of the class council. For the first time, the seniors elected the entire council by secret ballot in senior advisory. When the results were announced, the Class of 64 united behind their able leaders to make this the best year ever! Mr. Dahle did a fine job of supervising the senior elections. Each of these students maintained at least a 3.0 (B) average while carrying maximum credits. Southwest can be especially proud that 10 of the 67 received top honors. The requirements for this honor arc a 3.75 (A-) average or better and an organized program of academic subjects. The 1964 seniors were fortunate to have been exposed to a high standard of competition, since Southwest's largest graduating class contains proportionately more honor students than any previous class. De-Stripe the Tigers Preparation for October 18, Homecoming 1963, began early with a spirited campaign for button sales and the excitement of float building. Under the excellent direction of co-chairmen Jean Barry’ and Denny Johnson, the various committees carried out their plans for indoor and outdoor decorations and for welcoming alumni. Spirits, undampened by a thick early-morning mist, ran high throughout the day and reached a peak with the coronation of Queen Carol Williams. The game with South's Tigers resulted in a disappointing 7-6 loss. The Homecoming Dance, featuring the music of the Avantis, provided the perfect climax to a thrilling day. 107 Indian Spirit Prevails in 108 Homecoming Activities 109 Daisy Mat and Li'UAbntr They wouldn't ask US. This year's decorations and the music of the Mystery Beats set the scene for the greatest Sadie ever. no The merry-go-round week before winter vacation was climaxed by the appropriately named Christmas Carousel” held December 20. Couples danced to the smooth music of the Rich Clausen Band and enjoyed the refreshments provided by the dance committee. Reindeer, each bearing the name of a couple, pranced merrily on the walls until claimed by their owners. The dance was a wonderful way to begin Christmas Vacation, 1963. Dances Crown Winter Season The Winter Sports Dance, sponsored this year by Hi-Y, was held Friday, January 17, in the auditorium. Most school-wide activities function co-operatively with the Council. Social functions, the Paperback Bookstore, and the scrapbook are specific responsibilities assigned to Southwest student government. An accomplishment of this year’s Council was the innovation of a Student Council Bulletin Board. Annual operating funds were raised by the sponsorship of the Cooking School and the sale of popcorn and megaphones. Through the Council, Southwest students were provided with a sounding board for issues and ideas. ALL-CITY REPRESENTATIVES: Marcia Wattson and Jeff Peterson. The main purpose is to teach good citizenship by informing youth about its duties, privileges, and responsibilities. Representatives from Southwest, chosen by their classmates, spent a week as citizens of a mythical state attending lectures, elections, and social activities. Sally, Jeff, and Denny feel they gained a better understanding of the value of American citizenship and an acute awareness of what must be done to maintain our American heritage. LE CERCLE DE FRANCAIS Movies, songs, and parties were special features of this year's French Club program. At the first meeting, on September 24, members watched a movie on Paris. This was followed by movies on France and Europe at the next meeting. Early in December. Alan Weiss entertained members with French folksongs. Also at this time, members translated the popular French tune Dominique.” This year the club chose to celebrate Epiphany, the principal holiday in France, instead of holding the annual French Club Party. The celebration on January 2 included games— Pin the Nose on DcGaulle. refreshments—French pastry and punch, and a guest speaker —Barry Spector, a Southwest alumnus who told about his experiences while studying in France. The observation of traditional French customs, such .as the Epiphany party, furthered members' appreciation of French culture. FRENCH CLUB MEMBERS ROW I: Lynne Guilford. Kzthy Doyle. She was a special guest at the Christmas Fiesta de Navedad and gave jn interesting talk about her native country. Later in the evening everyone joined in breaking the piRata. At the January meeting films of Mexico and Spain were shown. One of the last social events was the annual dinner at La Casa Coronada, where members dined on spicy tacos, frijoles, and enchiladas. Members also promoted the UNESCO drive at Southwest and purchased additional copies of As' Se Dice for the Spanish Department. SOC1ETAS LATINA Forty Latin students were officially initiated into the Latin Club in a ceremony at the beginning of the school year. The first event for these new members was the annual slave sale on October 30. which helped raise funds for the other club activities. The traditional Saturnalia Breakfast was held in December. Miss Williams, club advisor, was presented with a corsage at the 7 A M. party. These various activities helped to extend classroom instruction in a very enjoyable way. A.F.S. CLUB Through the A.F.S. program. Southwest added two foreign students. Handan Ixmen from Turkey and Joe Sibala from the Philippines, to its enrollment. Handan and Joe quickly made friends with members of the A.F.S. Club and were kept busy with meetings once a month, a hay ride during Christmas vacation, and a breakfast on Joe's birthday. Tours, picnics, and parties with other A.F.S. students in Minneapolis were also scheduled. This activity program along with regular classroom studies provided them with an opportunity to learn about American life and to teach us about life in Turkey and the Philippines. These juniors have been selected as A.F.S. candidates for the coming year. Marguerite Avery and Barbara Wold have applied for the summer program and Maren Kaldor would like to spend the next academic year abroad. Although none of last year's candidates were chosen to go abroad, everyone hopes that Marguerite, Maren and Barb will represent Southwest this year. Southwest Radio Club members certainly agree with this. During the year, these hams improved their knowledge of radio, saw movies on electronics, operated transmitters, and talked to other hams throughout the world. To raise funds, they sold book covers and bail-point pens. The four already-licensed hams were proud to admit three new General Class operators to their ranks this year. DEBATE Students with a logical and inquiring mind and an interest in English and the Social Sciences usually make good debaters. Background in social studies was especially useful in debating this year's question. Should Social Security be extended to include complete medical care? Debaters prepared for this question by doing library research, acquiring current information, and participating in various round-robin debates. This preparation was rewarded when the team's top five debaters qualified for the Region 5 Tournament where the best four teams were chosen for state competition. In a field of twenty-two, Southwest placed fifth. The team was distinguished as being the only Minneapolis participant to enter the final elimination round. WORLD AFFAIRS CLUB An active interest in current history was stimulated by the new World Affairs Club. This organization gave members the opportunity to participate in the Star World Affairs Testing Program. Tests were taken in competition with other high schools for 26 consecutive weeks. In addition, several of the members attended the Blake Foreign Policy Discussion on November 12. Plans for organizing interscholastic discussion groups here at Southwest in the future, were formulated at the Discussion. WORLD AFFAIRS CLUB MEMBERS SEATED: Lynda Johnson. Joan Slavm. Their peppy music was appreciated at the sports previews, and football and basketball games. Several pep fests were also enlivened by a special Pep Band. Completing this active 1965-64 schedule were three concerts. Instead of performing in the Christmas Program, the Instrumental Department presented a Mid-Winter Concert on January 16. featuring the Senior High Band. The long hours of practice did not end with that concert, however. They immediately began to prepare for the annual Spring Concert and an out-of-town conceit. CHESS CLUB BIOLOGY CLUB A popular and challenging extracurricular activity is the Junior High Chess Club. At the first few meetings, novice members learned the fundamentals of the game. As the year progressed and their skills improved, they effectively challenged the more experienced players. Under the appropriately titled officers, the King, the Bishop, and the Knight and advisor Mrs. Witherow, weekly meetings were a rewarding after-school activity. Twice a month students in the Junior High Biology Club enjoyed meeting to explore many fields of science, with emphasis placed on biological study. Members were encouraged to do organized research and discuss the results. One of these research projects was the microscopic study of water in aquariums. Also, a field trip to Nine Mile Creek was made to collect plants and animals for the terrarium window by Room 31. Members ended the year with a visit to a museum and the Regional Science Fair. This year Southwest proved once again to be the cross country capital of Minnesota. Coached by Al Halley- and led by Captain Brian Anderson, the team began the season by defeating East High of Wichita, Kansas, in a postal dual meet. Each team ran on its own track and the results were exchanged by telegram. Next the harriers defeated Richfield and Roosevelt. Then they traveled to Windom, Minnesota, where a decisive victory was won over both the South Dakota State Champions and a leading team from Iowa. In the following weeks, through the combined efforts of Brian Anderson, Don Oliver, Rick Rotsch, Pete Hale, Clair Severson, Jeff Johnson, Dean Weigel, and Jim Solsvig, Southwest ran a perfect score against West and drubbed Washburn before taking second place in the Swain Invitational at Duluth. With great determination the harriers won their sixteenth City Championship in twenty-one years. The season was climaxed by winning the State Championship for the tenth time. With competition keener than ever, this year’s team proved to be the best in Minnesota’s cross country history. Coach Halley and Captain Brian Anderson Brians best time was 9:08. The season started poorly with the Indians tying Henry 7-7, and dropping a non conference game to Shattuck 14-13. The team then upset Washburn 20-12 before losing to powerful West and Roosevelt by scores of 13-6 and 12-6 respectively. The Homecoming game against South was lost by a heartbreaking score of 7-6. The team bounced back to clobber Marshall 27-6 and then lost the final game of the season to Central, the eventual Twin City Champion, by the score of 19-0. This year's team featured a stubborn defense and a fine offense. The running attack was greatly aided by the powerful playing of All-City halfback Vic Grecnstein. The defense was centered around second team All-City tackle and Southwest's Most Valuable Player, Jeff Peterson. Although the team had hoped for a better season's record, the)1 appreciated the constant support given to them by loyal Southwest fans. ROW 1: Alan Weiss, Jim Luhman, Jeff Erdman, Jim Kosmas. Captain Nick Smaby with Coach Williams. This year's basketball team, under the direction of Coach Williams, has been described as being much better than their 8 wins and 11 losses show. Faced with some of the stiffest competition in the state, the Indians compiled a mediocre 3-7 record in conference action, losing their first five games to the five best teams in the city. After shaking their early-season losing habit, the team fought its way to victor)- in five of the remaining seven games, before falling at the hands of a powerful West High team in District 17 competition. Boys who deserve individual credit are Vic Greenstein, Bill Johnson, and Captain Nick Smaby. The team's record should not be taken lightly for the strong finish reflects the tremendous spirit the boys developed during the course of the season. Then the)' entered the Region I tournament where they lost 2-1 to Richfield, whom they had defeated earlier in the season. The highlight of the season was a well-earned 4-1 victory over a powerful Hibbing team. This was an example of the skillful offense and effective defense which the team displayed during the season. Key defensive players were All-District goalie Dave Weaver, and Southwest’s Most Valuable Player Bob Coleman. Weaver had 6 shutouts and made an average of 0.920 saves per game. The Indians’ offense was very strong, scoring 90 goals in 23 games. High Scorer was Jim Luhman who had 23 points (15 goals and 9 assists). Both Coleman and Luhman were named to the All-City and All-District Teams. They have performed at numerous sports events and school programs throughout the year, as well as appearing on television during the Christmas season. Into their success went many hours of hard work and practice. During the year money raising projects were held to pay for choreography and costumes. The Indianettes sold calendars, doughnuts, and sponsored a dance. Their peppiness and enthusiasm are good examples of school spirit in action. 172 Indianettes express their appreciation with a gift . . . Enthusiasm and pep were key words for this year's chcerlcading squad. Early in the fall, they attended a special clinic, where many valuable pointers were given. Using these as a guide, they promoted school spirit at games and pep fests by teaching the students several new and original cheers. The cheerleaders prepared an excellent skit for Homecoming and made and sold Indian headbands. Coached by Mrs. Thiel, their hard work at weekly practices resulted in a very successful year. Scheduling Editor Jennifer Johnston. Mary Calhoun, and Business Manager Nancy Wheeler discuss subscription drive. Organizations Editor Dawn Nelson confers with Mary Conover and Darlene Harris on page layouts. This year’s staff made many innovations which we hope will add to the quality and enjoyment of the 1964 Wagistunian. Work began in the summer, as senior pictures were scheduled and ideas brainstormed. In September. it became necessary to hold meetings after school, due to the difficulties caused by IBM scheduling. A yearbook clinic at Augsburg College early in the year provided the incentive for many new ideas. Our theme. Spirit, was finally chosen, and decisions were made to include an Index, to revise the Junior High. Faculty, and Senior sections, and to use color, the first time it has appeared inside a Southwest yearbook, on the division pages. As deadlines approached, individual section work increased, including taking and rc-taking pictures, forming layouts, and writing headlines and copy. By March 15, 184 pages had been completed, approved, and sent to Dallas to be printed. We are grateful to Mr. Connolly, for help with our cover artwork, to Mr. Clair Peterson, whose skill and generous assistance our inexperienced staff couldn’t have done without, and to Miss Jebe. whose constant help and advice was an important factor in producing this yearbook. We hope that this Wagislanian will sene as a lasting reminder of the Spirit of Southwest. 1963-64. 178 Senior Editors Lynne Guilford and Roberta Stein gather new ideas from old yearbooks.
