There were many frozen fingers as the field decorations were put up. But, the school atmosphere was warm and expectant during all the last minute dither. Thanks to the excellent job done by co-chairmen Kay Ptashne and Rich Frandeen, many commented that this year’s Homecoming was one of the best ever. The drums beat softly as Queen Margi walked in and out among the five princesses. At last she paused behind perky, petite Patty Jo Patka and crowned her the 1962 Homecoming Queen. Patty Jo then ascended her throne, not without shedding a few happy tears, amidst resounding cheers. The entertainment began with such memorable acts as 'The Homecoming Hater, How the West was Won,” The Two Wallflowers,” and a comedy dialogue by Linda Mate)’ and Mr. Inglcbret. There were also polished performances by the Continentals and the Indianettes. Screams of laughter accompanied t h e professional ballet performed by the teachers. Then the coronation procession was escorted down to the field for a snowy, disappointing loss to West by one point. That night, students and alumni returned to school for the dance which was a fitting climax to an exciting day. 73 QpjdOJv The presidential convention was called together on Wednesday night, October 17, in the auditorium. The battle for votes was destined to be long and hard, as authorities from opposing sides conceded that both candidates were equally well qualified. As convention night cheering, cake-baking and poster-making ended, many seniors still were not able to make up their minds. Early the next morning, the final hour of rallying, skits, and speech-making took place . . . and then the final vote! Michael tried to row the boat ashore, but with a flash of his purple cape, the Big G” (which stands for George) appeared and won the election by a close six votes. The class rallied behind President George in an effort to make the class of '63 easy to remember. 74 yDOAiT LIT Mo Do PaTc i GAL SC a S SuJ O- O U A lMWM r 1 K'lKi t K.myy Qouifo HowfautS After several weeks of scheming and designing, the Southwest girls finally chose their dates for the November 16 Sadie Hawkins Dance. Daisy Maes showed up in all colors, dragging shy Li'l Abners by the hand. The marriage line stretched out across the auditorium, as starry-eyed girls and nervous boys took turns at the altar. With Mr. Adam’s ’ tactful” comments they were soon put at ease, and each blushing bride received a kiss. Always a success, the dance this year was one of the wildest ever. 75 Uagto The last hectic week before vacation was climaxed with a bit of Midwinter Magic,” a theme nicely carried out by the juniors on the evening of December 21. It was indeed magic as tired Southwest students suddenly blossomed out in a dreamy atmosphere of blue lights and silver stars. Each boy found his Christmas stocking on the wall with a special message to Santa Claus. (Santa must have had a sleigh full of girls this year.) 76 Cupid's ParLadifo Muffy Hursh, Sue Barry, Sandy McKenzie, Jane Hamilton, Sue Fournier. Cupid’s aim must have been good the night of February 9, 1963. Couples danced dreamily in a red, white and pink theme of ’’Cupid’s Paradise.” The spotlight was on each of the five Queen candidates as their dates escorted them to the stage. Senior Class President George Podolsky performed the ceremonies in which Sandy McKenzie was crowned the 1963 Sweetheart Queen. 77 You CcMy tTokto It With You ' DU cfal by IA.I S Donahue CAST: Penelope Sycamore ..... The tryouts, held in the Speech Lab, were a source of amusement and frustration for everyone involved. The daily rehearsals began immediately after the announcement of the cast and continued right up to the night of the performance. What went on at the rehearsals and behind the scenes is known only to the cast and Miss Donahue—memories such as trying to utter lines through a mouthful of pretzels, trying to get Diane in the right mood to play the drunken actress, signing the backdrop, someone kicking over the glass vase during the performance, and leading man sucking a lemon between acts on final night. The play was a success, and a rewarding experience for all who contributed their time and effort to it. 79 The cheerleaders practiced all summer to represent our school cheering section, and frequently spiced up the customary cheers with new arrangements. For the first time in many years, two boys were added to the squad. Another innovation was the appearance of the cheerleaders at baseball and track meets in new uniforms. The) also introduced the firewater jug competition between the senior high classes to get a louder and better cheering response from the student body. Mrs. Thiel was the cheerleader's advisor. Finish kicking lines, girls!” This familiar cry echoes in the gym when our newly-formed precision dance group, the Indianettes, practice under Mrs. Fran Libby, choreographer. Mrs. Frcn-chic Rogers is faculty advisor. The Indianettes are a closely-knit, self-governing group under Captain Diana Anderson, Secretary Julie Burglund, Treasurer Barb Carlson, and Scrgcant-at-Arms Jean Stevens. To raise money for their lessons and costumes, the girls sold doughnuts and calendars, and sponsored the Wagipompompowpow” dance March 15. This year they have been seen dancing at football and basketball games, in auditorium programs, at concerts, and on television. 83 Etoibail Posstag Ctubbcvuv AxvJk Qouikuti b SCORES SW OPPONENT 6 7 Marshall 25 20 Roosevelt 20 0 Vocational 14 6 South 13 7 Albert Lea 7 19 Central 2 6 West 26 7 North CO-CAPTAINS PETE GIRARD AND STEVE BAUMAN During their summer practice at Linden Hills, the Southwest team, led by seven senior lettermen, thought only of vindicating the humiliating defeats which Washburn had handed them in the last tw-o years. Although the team played Washburn to a 0-0 tic, in the furious 12 minutes of the Preview quarter, its members sustained a number of major and minor injuries which set them up for an opening upset. This ironic situation of upset following major victor)' again occurred after the Albert Lea game. FRONT ROW: B. Stone, T. Clinton. J. Stallman, J. Anderson, J. Kosmos, T. Vandcrhyde, D. Anderson, J. The offensive unit epitomized the 1963 team. Composed of five juniors and seven seniors, the team, led by uarterback Corey Coichour, ran from a half a dozen ivergent formations enabling the appropriate attack against varied defenses. The ground game ran smoothly behind the consistent and powerful blocking of wing-back Bob Gammell and tackles Pete Girard and Erwin Kurtz. And, as always at Southwest, the speed and agility with which the guards executed their trap blocking was a key factor in the running attack. Following the Marshall upset due to inexperience, the high-point game of the season came at Roosevelt where an offensive dual between Bob Slavik of Roosevelt and Denny Anderson found the latter victorious with three touchdown tallies. Anderson went on to be a leading scorer by mid-season until his broken leg at Albert Lea blunted the offensive attack for the remainder of the year. Likewise the interior line was plagued with injuries and Southwest lacking experienced depth for the ground game, often went to the air in crucial situations. The pinpoint passing of Coichour coupled with the artful deception of end Steve Ruff made Southwest’s an explosive offense. With seven interior linemen returning for the 196-1 team. Southwest hopes for the long-awaited city championship. DEFENSIVE BACKS: Spero Thcros, Denny Anderson. Nick Smaby. Coach Fredrickson believes a good defense will never lose a game. With this in mind, line coach Dave Peterson, by a combination of perspiration and inspiration, formed the defense into a closely knit and consistently scrappy unit. ‘Although they warmed-up slowly to midseason, the defense held the strong rushing teams of South, Albert Lea, and West to one touchdown or less. Overall, the team stopped six of its eight opponents at the same score. With the exception, of two games early in the season, the Southwest defense never allowed more than two first downs in the second half. While the defense players provided the only solace in the Southwest Homecoming game by scoring a safety, their finest performance was the costly Albert Lea victory. With all seven starters of last year's cross country team graduating, the chances of Southwest producing a winning team appeared slight. But, coached by A1 Halley, led by George Podolsky, and paced by Bob Weigel, the team worked very hard to become the finest State Champions in Southwest’s history. The most surprising improvement, of course, was shown by Bob Weigel who ran two or three times daily the entire summer to cover over 1,000 miles by fall. In his first performance of the year, Weigel ran the 8:48, the same time which he ran later in the year to win State Champion. Brian Anderson, also surprising, bested all previous Southwest harriers and nearly defeated St. Louis Park’s John Valentine with his 8:53 effort while placing third in the State Meet. Rick Rotsch, Don Oliver, and Ric Raymond showed marked improvement from the previous season under the invaluable leadership of Captain George Podolsky. It is needlessly repeated that cross country has become a tradition at Southwest. This tradition, one of sacrifice and work, was never better demonstrated by any cross country team. The team's next game was a loss to the undefeated city champion. North. Following this loss, the squad defeated Marshall, and then lost to a strong South team. Central proved the year's most exciting game with Colehour again providing the winning margin by scoring eight points in the last two minutes to total 24. Steve Ruff tallied 17 in his finest performance to help the team edge the future District Champions 54-53. In their last five scheduled games, the Indians defeated Henry, Edison and Washburn, while losing to Roosevelt and Howard Lake. Coached by personable Dave Peterson and led by Captain Denny Anderson, the team improved steadily during the season, and must be considered a strong title contender for next year. The pucksters began their season by losing to a scrappy Minnetonka team on Thanksgiving, 3-2. During Christmas vacation they journeyed to northern Minnesota where they lost to two strong Range teams, Eveleth and Hibbing. Returning home, the team began its conference season by defeating Edison, North, and Vocational, and then tying a strong West team, 3-3. The team then lost to Henry and Marshall and defeated South. The game with our arch-rival Washburn ended in a tic. But the Millers had to score in the last minute to gain the 3-3 deadlock. Warming up for the Roosevelt game, the team bombed the Central goalie posting an 11-1 victor)'. The game with the Teddies was a different story, as the Indians lost the conference finale 6-0. In other non-conference games, Southwest lost to strong teams from White Bear, South St. Paul, and De La Salle, and defeated St. Paul Central. This was the first time that an Indian squad had defeated the Millers in wrestling. The squad was able to defeat their next three opponents, South, Henry, and Vocational, before losing their first match to a strong West team. The next week, the grapplers lost to the eventual City and District Champions, Marshall, in a thrilling 24-23 match. Following this near upset, the team defeated Central, Edison, and North, before losing their final conference match to an always-strong Roosevelt team. In non-conference matches, the team lost to two strong teams. Golden Valley and Bcnilde. The high point of the season occurred when Mayo’s Maulers” finished second in the District 17 Meet behind Marshall. In this meet, Co-Captains Chum Miller and Dan Sholl, along with Dan Hasty, won individual championships. Steve Bauman, the undefeated City' Champion at 154 pounds, was stunned in his championship match, and lost to a boy from West whom he had beaten 14-0 during the regular season. Affable Rod Anfcnson of St. Cloud State began his first year as track coach at Southwest replacing punctilious A1 Halley. Many members of the track team ran outside during the winter months in preparation for March first, when the coach begins working with the athletes at the University of Minnesota Field House. The first significant meet of the year is the Metropolitan Indoor Meet, held in the Field House in early April. Southwest, along with Minneapolis Central and St. Paul Central have been the strong contenders for this title. After this meet it is usually many weeks before conditions are such that the athletes can equal their best indoor times outdoors. Then, with warmer days and a firmer track available, work-outs take on a methodical nature, consummating with the Washburn dual, City, and State meets. During the summer months there are open meets and marathon races in which many of the athletes compete. In past years Southwest has generally been strong in distance and weight events and weak in the sprint and field events. This year will probably prove no exception. The State Championship Cross Country team will contribute milers George Podolsky, Skip Weigel, and Brian Anderson, and half-milcr Don Oliver, along with other excellent distance runners to the 1963 track team. The sprint and field events must be handled largely by underclassmen. So, if A1 Halley’s belief that a city track team needs good seniors to win, Southwest will probably lose points in these events. Track, as is cross country', is always strong at Southwest. In his first year as head coach, Rod Anfenson and this year’s team will uphold the tradition. 101 Baseball Qpju ycS Leo lTdh Quest Returning seniors Corey Colehour, Steve Ruff, Larry Altman, and Bob Fox will lead several underclassmen in baseball games this spring. Studies of biography show that the man who achieves is usually the man who has an aim. a pupose—a star to give him inspiration and direction. This star takes different forms and has different heights for different people. It must be high enough in each case, however, to require the individual to stretch to attain it. Education is instrumental in giving purpose to a person's life. It helps to identify his guiding star. We hope your years at Southwest High School have helped locate the star at which you will shoot and that each of you will take advantage of additional educational opportunities beyond high school to sharpen your aim. R. H. Classon Principal Own PltftCijDais Congratulations on reaching a milestone in your educational career. I hope this is but another step along the way to a full and satisfying life. You have made many new friends and old friendships have matured. Your success, or failure, in future years will depend to a great extent on how well you apply the lessons, both academic and non-academic, yor have learned here. This past year, my first at Southwest, has been a very pleasant one. To all of you who have made this year such a memorable one I say, ' thank you. I want to offer each graduate my personal best wishes for success in all his future endeavors. G. H. Dahl Assistant Principal 164 Miss Brinley, the senior high girls counselor, is one of the most active members of our staff. Her wide range of duties include senior high programming and supervising testing programs. With her competent advice she is the one who helps you get into the college of your choice. Mr. Warner guides the senior high boys concerning college admissions and vocational plans. He also supervises the American Field Service Program at Southwest to maintain the high caliber of our exchange students. Owv lndlCtiv Guides Miss Magnusson enjoys her job as a counselor, especially because of the diversity of students with whom she works. This year she handles one-third of the tenth grade as well as all of the ninth grade. She devotes her efforts to guiding each of her students into a satisfying high school curriculum. Mrs. Undine is the seventh and eighth grade boys’ and girls' counselor. She is vital in providing a sound basis for their high school programs. She enjoys her job because she has an avid interest in young people and their problems. 165 Mar)' I.ou Walkup Marjorie Na.uel Frances MacDonald Everyone thinks that all we do is to check books in and out, say the librarians. Actually, Miss Walkup has become quite an expert at helping knitters, sewing ripped skirts, and washing stray cats. Her colleague, Mrs. Nagel, has a secret talent for making excellent coffee. Besides this, they arc very competent librarians! Mrs. MacDonald’s job requires great tact. As our nurse and social service teacher, she is responsible for the social, emotional, and physical health of the Southwest students. She herself describes her job as never routine, and says, I have a lot of fun. Fft CvJUtij Couacil 166 STANDING: Mr. Banks, Mr. Dahl. Mr. Norm Johnson. Mr. Levin, Mr. Phillips. SEATED: Mr. Classon, Miss Donahue. Miss Telandcr. Most of the clerical staff is new to Southwest this year. They have certainly done a commendable job of keeping our records straight; printing bulletins, programs, report cards, attendance sheets, and diverse other material. Miss Gordon, the Chief Clerk, says, We are very fortunate to have the staff that we do. Qyyidb CLERKS: Ruth Norton, LaVerne Leslie, Irene Dahl. Ruth Carow, Bertha Gordon (CHIEF CLERK), Marge Ramstad. Alvyr Browning. Have you ever been swept off your feet by a handsome Southwest custodian? It wouldn't be surprising, for our janitors arc very thorough. Many of their duties are carried out in that fascinating underground maze of tunnels, colored pipes, and gigantic furnaces. They, too, seem to enjoy their work. As Andy puts it, Where else would I find so many happy, smiling faces? CUSTODIANS: Oscar Rossum (CHIEF ENGINEER), John Milcwski, Andy Babich. Bob Sorenson. Eugene Sorum. Jesse Sharpe. Earl Fosland, Teresa Kerkering. NOT PICTURED: Carl Trapp. How does it feel to work in Paul Bunyan's kitchen? Just ask the Southwest cooks. They arc quite dwarfed by a twelve-gallon mixer, a forty-gallon pressure cooker, and a walk-in refrigerator. Huge pots of spaghetti are stirred with yard-long spoons. The kitchen is a mystery. Everyone should see it in action !” exclaims Mrs. Krueger. COOKS: Margaret Wallin, Margaret Krueger (LUNCHROOM MANAGER), Ruth Hansen, Edna Aleckson, Stella Olson, Marion Molitor.
