' isM Gift - Matt Perrier roiNNieAPOUS public LiotiAttV u 1962 Wag'STANIAN Created by SOUTHWEST high SCHOOL NN(Jal staff Alfnneapoli, ©sofo American high school students all possess a common bond of loyalty to their student lives. Call it enthusiasm, spirit, or love of fun, as you may, yet it is still that something which makes adolescence perhaps the most wonderful period of anyone's life. It is to this enthusiasm and actually to youth itself that we dedicate the 1962 Wagistanian. 2 3 contents PLEASE 4 PRINT 5 6 7 faculty TO THE CLASS OF 1962: The theme of your Wagistanian this year is enthusiasm. This choice is, indeed, appropriate for a class of high school graduates. The successes of whatever activity you undertake upon your graduation from high school will in no small measure be governed by your enthusiasm for what you are doing. It has been said that nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm; that it is contagious; that it always exaggerates the importance of important things and overlooks their deficiencies; and that it is hard to restrain. Along with enthusiasm, however, must go direction and self discipline. Unbridled enthusiasm improperly directed can lead to confusion, heartache and disappointment. It has been the objective of those of us on the faculty to add to the enthusiasm of youth the important ingredients of proper direction and purpose. R. H. Classon 8 Our Assistant Principal, Mr. Meixner, has many duties and responsibilities. Scheduling us into classes of our choice is one of his important duties. He works with Mr. Classon and others in the Administration as they carefully plan the many school activities and make them a success. The atmosphere is one of friendly cooperation, as they work together to make our school life more satisfying and productive. We thank Mr. Meixner for his ability and helpful spirit in making our school run smoothly. 9 COUNSELING STAFF MISS BRINLEV MISS MAGNUSSON MRS. UNDINE Our four counselors are perhaps the most versatile faculty members at Southwest. Helping the Junior High are Mrs. Undine with the seventh graders and Miss Magnusson with those in the eighth and ninth grades. Senior High girls consult with Miss Brinley and the boys with Mr. Warner. In addition to advising us with our programs, the counselors also supply us with information concerning college admission, supervise such programs as A.F.S., and provide ushers for various school functions. To each of these counselors. Southwest says a hearty Thank you! MR. WARNER SERVICE PERSONNEL Marjorie Vicar , Ruth Carow, Gertrude McArdie, Priscilla Anderson. Bertha Gordon (Chief Clerk). A heartfelt thanks to our unselfish clerks, cooks, and custodians. Without their devoted service. Southwest could not run as smoothly as it does. Although their efforts are often unnoticed and unrewarded, we appreciate the friendly assistance of the office staff, the nutritious meals served by the cooks, and the classrooms neatly swept and polished by the custodians. Many years of loyal service have won them our respect. They will not go unremembered. Ruth Hansen, Margaret Wallin, Marion Hcrstrom, Martha Conner. Edna Aleck- on, Stella Ol on, Margaret Krueger. Jeite Sharpe, Eugene Sorman, George Sorenson, John Milewski, Oscar Rossum, Teresa Kerkerling, Andy Babich, Earl Fosland. Not Pictured: Erick landin. LIBRARIANS SPECIAL SERVICE TEACHER Mrs. McDonald, although new to Southwest this year, has already won the confidence and friendship of all who have come in contact with her. Her assistance in the solution of our individual problems is an invaluable service. When it comes to getting information for reports, or just finding good books to enjoy in our spare time, what would we ever do without the helpful assistance of our librarians, Miss Walkup and Mrs. Nagel? Their efficiency in keeping the library running smoothly and quietly is much appreciated by all. FACULTY COUNCIL 12 SEATED: Mr. Classon, Miss Telander, Miss lohmann, Mrs. Otto. DIARY OF ANNE FRANK The lights dimmed, the audience became silent, and the curtain parted, slowly revealing a dusty, deserted attic in Amsterdam, Holland. Thus began the tragic story of a young Jewish girl, forced into the confining walls of a secret room to escape Nazi Germany oppression. As each act, preceded by Anne's quiet voice, unfolded, the worried suspense of the characters crept through the room, and filled each on-looker with tense excitement. Then, the soldier's shouts rang out and the curtain drew to a final close. The audience flowed onto the stage to congratulate the cast on their inspirational presentation, and walked away with the tear-stained realization that what they had seen was one of the finest plays in Southwest's history. 24 The one-act play cast ... at rosf. E-A-S-Y EASY. Ya! MACHETE THE TEDDIES This year Friday, October 13, marked the celebration of Homecoming at Southwest, and in opposing Roosevelt we chose to Machete the Teddies. The day began early for those busy committee members who were assembling decorations outside the main entrance when most of us were just getting out of bed. It began even earlier for the hearty group of seniors who trekked out to Perkins' for breakfast. Through the day, excitement swelled until a climax was reached at 1:35 p.m. when Margaret McNaughten was crowned 1962 Homecoming Queen. The auditorium was filled with an air of mystery and superstition as three witches led by their male counterpart, Nalyob hexed the Teddies. At 3:00 the Indians played host to the Roosevelt team, and won a victory with the score of 7-6. The last event of this thrilling day was a dance held in the auditorium, featuring the Big M's. 96 And fool i fair??? There  he i ‱rtKMTL kk THI tlllltl Y Put a little fun in your life. But whenever the group strayed too far from the work at hand, Editor Janet moved the staff to action once again by just one small remark: The deadline is coming up and we will probably be holding some extra meetings. Many hours were spent debating how the extra pages would be used with each editor fighting for his own section. The addition of a color photo in the Annual was another big decision that was long pondered. Last-minute brainstorms and changes of plans brought frantic exclamations from all the staff. But at last the problems were overcome, the changes made and the deadlines met. The final product was this 1962 Wagistanian and it is our hope that it will serve you well as a happy reminder of the days you spent in high school. in? J. Bailey, J- IcFevere, J. Premack G. Aune, C. The opening activity of the season was a general meeting where a hypnotist demonstrated his techniques. One of the high points of Blue Tri activities was the Recognition Dinner followed by a style show which honored President Pat Kennedy and her cabinet. The major service project for this year entailed filling Thanksgiving baskets for needy families in the Minneapolis area by collecting canned goods on a scavenger hunt. An event that everyone looked forward to was the successful Sweetheart Swing, held this year in our auditorium; the theme was Hearts by Starlight. CHAPTER 3 ROW I: M. Bocck, J. Silver, P. Patka, K. As was the case last year, the choir sold candy for their choir trip which was taken to Winnipeg. During December, the choir had many concerts and appearances which included two television shows. In February, a clinic was held at Sibley High School. Perhaps one of the most hectic activities was the Music Carnival. The most popular concession, especially for the girls, was the Slave Auction. The Annual Spring Concert is the final test of the quality of the choir. Intense daily rehearsals coupled with wonderful ideas should prove this choir is the best in the state. f i l ' f 4 M I 1 « ROW Is S. Ungerman, F. Ackerman, S. $tan field, J. Hanson, P. Sterrie, J. This year the Senior Band rose to new heights of melodious harmony under the leadership of its new director, Mr. Stoyke. The band not 'only brought added incentive for school spirit at games and pepfests, but also gave a number of enjoyable concerts. President Bill Steffey and Vice President Ken Lerum again organized the sale of tempting World's Finest Chocolate, raising funds for their annual spring trip. The managing and coordinating of the large and active band is a difficult and tedious task. The handling of music and the preparing of uniforms and instruments for concerts are only two examples of the extensive duties of the band officers. The band was a success in all its endeavors this year and was appreciated by the student body and faculty. ROW I: R. No , J. Larson, A. Muihullen, I. Rood, 1. Smith, K. Hoover. ROW 2: B. Selindcr, S. The gridders faced a full eight game schedule beginning with Washburn and South, perhaps the two most difficult foes Southwest faces in a season. Probably the most exciting game of the season was the Homecoming game with Roosevelt. The game ended in a 7-6 victory for Southwest. This was the result of a hard fought defensive battle with our defensive unit scoring our only touchdown. This year's team was led by captain Jack Bestrom, our first-line halfback. Other outstanding players included seniors: Tom Hal pern. Brad Rothnem, and Rick Johnson, and juniors: Steve Bauman, Pete Girard (cap-tains-elect), Doug Tueting, and Cory Cole-hour. Add to this a tie for first in the Swain Invitational, a first in the City, and seconds in the Region and State Meets, and you can readily see how successful the team has been this year. The reason for this success is simple: team desire. Led by Captain Barry Beardslee, the Harriers worked very hard last summer and throughout the regular season. Rarely has Coach Al Halley had a team with more balance. The boys contested for top positions throughout the season. Because of this there were no real standouts—every meet won came from a team effort. The B squad, under Mr. Phillips also had a successful season, climaxed by a win in the City B Meet. They will be an important addition to the returning A squad led by Captain-elect George Podolsky. CAPTAIN BEARDSLEE AND COACH HAILEY CROSS COUNTRY CITY CHAMPIONS-1961 ROW 3, L-R: D. Wilson, H. Coach Walt Williams' untiring devotion is one of the main factors for the team's success. It was a long and hard season for the team, starting with a victory over Pipestone. This was significant because the team went on to win 17 out of 20 games. After a heartbreaking loss to Washburn, the team made up their minds to win, and they did just that! They won their last eleven games, including sub-district games against Washburn and North. The secret weapon of the team, according to Coach Williams, is the extraordinary balance they possess. One of the greatest assets to the- team is their ability to play well under extreme pressure. They have proved this many times in last quarter batrles during the season. Team spirit is at an all time high. The team as a whole is very good, especially because of outstanding individuals, including Jack Hagberg, Shel Strom, Steve Ruff, Dick Parssinen, Cory Colehour, and Jack Bestrom. Individual effort coupled with enthusiastic team spirit lends to the greatest and most well-balanced team in the history of our school. Our congratulations to them. This placed Southwest in a three-way tie with Roosevelt and South for second place, although we beat both those teams in competition. Led by Captain Mike Ford, our first line was one of the best in the city. Net-tender Terry Browning and 'wing Ford were selected for the all-city team, while Tom Maeser, Tom Halpern and Bob Coleman received honorable mention. Besides winning ail their dual meets (which extends their consecutive winning record to 35), they' won the District 17 meet by a margin of 25 points. This makes the third year Southwest has taken the city title. The team, under novice coach Anderson and cocaptains Harry Woodward and Jay Wescott, showed great desire. Because of limited pool facilities, all schools had equal pool time. Southwest, however, overcame this equalizer with hard work and spirit. Individual stars were Harry Woodward in the butterfly. Rich Frandeen in freestyle distances, Tim Lush and Jeff fastest thing afloat Erdmann in the sprints, and Pat Ford in diving. SWIMMING ROW 3: B. James, S. Knapp, S. Fredrickson, F. Mann, D. Allan, J. Under the excellent leadership of Captain Al Christianson and Coach Mayo, the team turned in a very respectable record of five wins and five losses, which placed them fifth in the city. Al was city champion in the 154 lb. weight class and Clark Miller was champ at 127 lbs. The team won most of their meets because of good team balance, as testified by the placing of five boys in the Region meet. Southwest finished the season with a tie for fourth in the District. B A S E B A L L The baseball team, under coach Bill Adam, is looking forward to a successful season. With the aid of returning veterans, some underclassmen, and a new pitching machine. Coach Adam is thinking positively about the coming season. The highlight of the season will no doubt be the home run race between Mitsu and Maris. The twenty seniors engaged in the Phy. Ed. Leadership program this year have been a great help to the teachers. This is the first year that the program has been put into effect to this extent. The seniors are learning a little child psychology as well as gaining experience in working with others. The Phy. Ed. instructors hope to continue this program in the coming years. ROW IV: K. Mrs. Knutson, coach, is looking forward to Sarah Lawrence, Sandy Smith, Sue Kretschmer, and Linda Ertsgaard to lead the team to success. With many new girls joining the tennis team this year, Mrs. Rogers is hoping for success. Tennis has been a popular sport at Southwest. The badminton team had a very successful year. By beating Washburn they re-captured the city championship. Mrs. Rogers felt she had a well-balanced team this year and they deserved to win the title.
