ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Mias Brinley, our Senior High Girls' Counselor, is well known for her able guidance of students through the difficulties of college and job applications and for her supervision of all girls' clubs. These, along with her many other duties, make her one of the busiest and most admired individuals at Southwest. It is difficult for us to realize that Mr. Meixner has been with us for only two years because of all that he has accomplished in that short time. His friendly concern and his efficiency in cooperating with both students and faculty have made him well known and respected by the entire student body. Most of us are not aware of the long hours of paper work, meetings, and frustration which go into the administration of a school. But we do appreciate the results of those tedious tasks and are grateful to Mr. Meixner foi all he has done. COUNSELORS Mr. Warner, our Senior High Boy»' Counselor, is regarded by all as a very effective member of our faculty. He has guided the A.F.S. program to new interest and vitality, and wc know that his advice and information will have a lasting influence oar nik Southwest students. - Miss Magnusson, our Junior High Counselor, helps junior highers in the important problems of high school programming, improving grades, and solving many individual difficulties. W'e thank her not only on behalf of the junior high but also on behalf of the senior high, which she thus helps to create and develop. 9

PRINCIPAL TO MEMBERS OF THE 1961 GRADUATING CLASS: You were in the ninth grade when, on that historic day in October 1957, Sputnik was launched. The days and years that have followed have seen a tremendous pressure to give added emphasis in our school curriculum to science and mathematics. Schools across the nation have responded to this public demand. I hope you have received a good high school foundation in these subjects. We would remind you, however, that science and mathematics alone cannot save either the world or the individuals in it. We at Southwest, as we bid you Godspeed, hope that your high school years have helped develop your understanding of, and appreciation for, your fellow men. We hope you have better learned to understand and appreciate the finer things in life as represented in good literature, art and music. We hope you have developed an appreciation of the skills needed to make a living—as well as the moral foundations necessary for building a life. 8 Best of wishes to you all, R. H. Classon

SPECIAL SERVICES Mrs. Henricksen has ca-pably assisted us as School Nurse. In addition to the many duties she has in this capacity, she serves as our Special Service Teacher, dealing with cases of discipline outside the classroom. We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Chapman as our Speech Therapist at Southwest. She has done much to help those pupils who have speech problems. We hope to have her with us again next year. Our efficient librarians. Miss Walkup and Mrs. Nagel, are truly deserving of praise. Not only do they keep our library running smoothly, but they help to make it a pleasant and quiet place to study. FACULTY COUNCIL Loose bee causes havoc at council meeting Mr. Strand, Mrs. Maxfield, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Qasson, Mr. McDonough, Mr. Meixner, Mr. Caruso. 10 Not Pictured: Mr. Ford.
