The Wagistanian staff has considered this question and decided that a yearbook’s purpose is to serve as a pictorial diary of the school year. With this foremost in our minds we have created the 1961 W'agislanian for and about you—the students of Southwest. 2 The past nine months are recorded here: the first entrance, the final exit, and all the classes and activities in between. We hope that each of you will find on the following pages those special moments which have meant so much to you. THE EDITORS OUR DEDICATION As Seniors we have many memories of our years at Southwest: outstanding among them is Mr. Adam. His friendly concern for each of us. his voluntary chaperonage of all our parties, and his riotous humor on the Washington trip have made lasting impressions on all of us. How many of us have been stopped in the halls by him with an interested question about our classes? When one of our Senior parties needed an adult’s presence, he came and contributed to the general fun. The jolting 24-hour train ride from Minneapolis to Washington. D.C.. was filled with jokes and games stimulated by him. Mr. Adam, in an attempt to show our appreciation, we dedicate the 1961 W’agistan-ian to you. A TO YOU, MR. ADAM 5 6 7 ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL TO MEMBERS OF THE 1961 GRADUATING CLASS: You were in the ninth grade when, on that historic day in October 1957, Sputnik was launched. The days and years that have followed have seen a tremendous pressure to give added emphasis in our school curriculum to science and mathematics. Schools across the nation have responded to this public demand. I hope you have received a good high school foundation in these subjects. We would remind you, however, that science and mathematics alone cannot save either the world or the individuals in it. We at Southwest, as we bid you Godspeed, hope that your high school years have helped develop your understanding of, and appreciation for, your fellow men. We hope you have better learned to understand and appreciate the finer things in life as represented in good literature, art and music. We hope you have developed an appreciation of the skills needed to make a living—as well as the moral foundations necessary for building a life. 8 Best of wishes to you all, R. H. Classon ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Mias Brinley, our Senior High Girls' Counselor, is well known for her able guidance of students through the difficulties of college and job applications and for her supervision of all girls' clubs. These, along with her many other duties, make her one of the busiest and most admired individuals at Southwest. It is difficult for us to realize that Mr. Meixner has been with us for only two years because of all that he has accomplished in that short time. His friendly concern and his efficiency in cooperating with both students and faculty have made him well known and respected by the entire student body. Most of us are not aware of the long hours of paper work, meetings, and frustration which go into the administration of a school. But we do appreciate the results of those tedious tasks and are grateful to Mr. Meixner foi all he has done. COUNSELORS Mr. Warner, our Senior High Boy ' Counselor, is regarded by all as a very effective member of our faculty. He has guided the A.F.S. program to new interest and vitality, and wc know that his advice and information will have a lasting influence oar nik Southwest students. - Miss Magnusson, our Junior High Counselor, helps junior highers in the important problems of high school programming, improving grades, and solving many individual difficulties. W'e thank her not only on behalf of the junior high but also on behalf of the senior high, which she thus helps to create and develop. 9 SPECIAL SERVICES Mrs. Henricksen has ca-pably assisted us as School Nurse. In addition to the many duties she has in this capacity, she serves as our Special Service Teacher, dealing with cases of discipline outside the classroom. We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Chapman as our Speech Therapist at Southwest. She has done much to help those pupils who have speech problems. We hope to have her with us again next year. Our efficient librarians. Miss Walkup and Mrs. Nagel, are truly deserving of praise. Not only do they keep our library running smoothly, but they help to make it a pleasant and quiet place to study. FACULTY COUNCIL Loose bee causes havoc at council meeting Mr. Strand, Mrs. Maxfield, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Qasson, Mr. McDonough, Mr. Meixner, Mr. Caruso. 10 Not Pictured: Mr. Ford. THE COMPETENT C’S Once again we are devoting a page of the Wagistanian to our service personnel, who have the often difficult and thankless job of keeping Southwest running smoothly. Our loyal clerks keep the office going in their usual efficient manner; our custodians keep the school in shape through the long Minnesota winters; and our cooks, whose culinary efforts too often go unrewarded, turn out warm, nutritious meals day after day. We wish to thank all these men and women who serve the school so very well throughout the long school year. The seventh and the eighth grade girls competed on a homeroom basis, while the ninth grade girls played strictly in team competition. Their activities included soccer, basketball, relays, badminton, skating, trampoline, and bowling. Letters were awarded to the girls at a picnic held in the spring. The success of the organization was shown by its enthusiastic membership which included 85% of all junior high girls. G.A.A. CABINET: A. Norman, Secretary; K. Bruner, 8th Grade Activity Chairman; J. With Nick Rozsa at its head the class of 1961 forged strongly forward during its senior year setting many fine precedents for future classes. A senior directory was published, and several fun-filled parties were planned. Through the unsurpassed leadership of the senior class officers, the class of ’61 became one of the most outstanding and unified classes in the school’s history. Our class officers are: Nick Rozsa, President; Mick Fewer, Vice President; Cheeta Adams, Secretary; Bob Richter, Treasurer; Sue Jones, Girls’ Scrgeant-at-Arms; and Phil Renslow, Boys' Sergcant-at-Arms. Lovely ladies—kind gentlemen. Please to introduce myself. Sakini hy name, interpreter by profession.” Such were the words with which Dick Grossman opened the 1%1 Senior Class Play. I he play, “lea-house of the August Moon. had the largest cast in the school’s history and also some of the largest laughs. The cast was headed by Dick Grossman and Joan Blumenson, with excellent support from Terry Arncrson, Ron Herzog, Sheldon Gultman. and Dave Scott. The play concerns an army captain. Terry Arncrson, who is continually under pressure from his superior the colonel, Ron Herzog, who sent him to build a ”pentagon-shaj ed school-house in a small village on the island of Okinawa. As it turns out. a beautiful girl. Geisha Joan Blumenson. upsets the plans for progress, and a teahouse is built instead. The humanism, coupled with wonderful humor, gives the play its tremendous audience appeal. With the help of the Southwest stage crew, which created brilliant settings and lighting. Mrs. E. Boylan was able to stage a play which had many moments of professional polish. Congratulations to all the seniors and all the teachers who worked so hard to make this year’s play the great success it was. SITTING—B. Robertson, R. Kiefer, M. Abram , S. Led by Captain Rick Anderson, the squad came close to becoming the top cross country team in the stale, losing by a narrow margin of only four points. Their outstanding record was due not only to their hard daily work and to the efforts of Coach A1 Halley, but also to the terrific team spirit always present in Southwest Cross Country teams. The B-squad, coached by Mr. Phillips and Mr. Halley, showed great potential for the coming years in their winning of the City “B” title. They, along with returning lettermen Marshall Garneau. Ward Johnson. Joe Nelson, and captain-elect Barry Bearsley, make the prospects for another fine cross country season in 61 very bright. HOW 1--Mr. Phillips 1L Beardslee, M. Garneau. P. Okney, H. Outstanding players on the team included Captain Tom Murray and defenseman Denny Busyn, who was elected to the second all city team. Although Coach Levin and his hoys were ready to ski anytime the conditions were right, many meets still had to be canceled or postponed. However, our Minnesota weather did come through enough to enable the team to participate in two dual meets, the city and the state meets. Marlys Parker’s basement, and Mary Jo Myers dining room saw many a hectic Annual meeting take place as the Wagistanian took shaj e. Every school day the third and fourth hours met and worked on copy, lay-out. senior-sayings, and the cover. Often the | eriod was s| cnt in long-winded discussions on practically any subject or on some artistic blackboard sketches, for it seemed that more was accomplished at the week-end meetings than any three weeks in class. It seemed easier and more fun to work with chocolate chip cookies and ginger snaps at your side. However, co-editors Marlys Parker and Mary-Jo Myers drove everyone and anyone to work to meet the deadlines. Pictures were taken and retaken, copy was written and re written. And the deadlines were met and remet! The Annual staff ended the year with a banquet at Charlie’s Cafe and of course thoroughly enjoyed the food, the hashing over of old memories, and the indoctrination of the juniors who would soon carry the staffs worries and woes. Vice President Judy Anderson, and Secretary-Treasurer Peggy Sterrie keeping the entire membership active. A breakfast was enthusiastically held at Perkin’s Pancake House to start the year off. This spirit was carried through to the Christmas Party where French carols were sung and “The Night Before Christmas” was read in French. The season ended with a dinner at Jean’s French Restaurant which saw the introduction of the new officers and the exit of the old ones. It is hoped that this dinner will become an annual affair. Their High School career had been marked by many superlatives and the final activities made the record complete. The Honorable Walter Judd was guest speaker at a beautiful ami thought provoking Baccalaureate. On Cap and Gown day a record number of students received awards, honors, scholarships, and commendations. Fifty-six students qualified for gold braid. Then Commencement— with a strong cold wind blowing white clouds (and mortar boards) the setting was perfect. Dick Gregory and Dick Grossman gave excellent speeches on the values of a High School education: “The Bricks and “The Mortar.” The long march off the field was terminated in a dash to the school where refreshments were served and the graduates, stimulated by excitement, prepared for the train ride. TRAIN RIDE From the first jammed crowding of 240 teen agers into three buses the Senior Train Ride promised a riotous change from the rather sedate behavior the Seniors had exhibited in the previous months and years. When the buses pulled up at the station the masses of newly freed grads surged through the waiting train. Cliques, snobbery, and shyness were forgotten in the rushes for seats. The spirit of good, clean-uninhibited-fun dominated the train even before it pulled out. The box car and the “Big M’s” were soon discovered and for the next four hours that place was packed. The din was so loud that dancers were following noise rather than music. The Little Falls ballroom was the scene of continued and. if possible, increased excitement in the form of square dancing, games, draw ings, and food. On the still gay train ride home the ex-seniors discovered that sunrise as seen from a box car is somehow extra beautiful. The heaps of food waiting at Lake Harriet Methodist Church were welcome and satisfying and chased exhaustion away for awhile. Good-bys were punctuated by yawns from the tired revelers who were in a hurry to go home and fall into bed. 1961 JUNIOR- Arriving prom-goers passed through golden gates to enter “Almost Paradise.” For most of them, however, the evening was a true paradise complete with gracious refreshments, soft lights, and dreamy music. Southwest juniors and seniors and their dates made a sea of white splashed with color, filling the ha 11 room of the Calhoun Beach Hotel to capacity. SENIOR PROM Potted palms lined the room and the fountain on one side was the recipient of various sized coins and only a few hands (though many tired feet would have loved to test its coolness). After an evening of socializing and dancing the students split up, going in many different directions: to late dinners. private parties, breakfasts, and picnics. For all the dance was an unforgettable occasion. COAC H ADAM and GENE DIXSON BASEBALI MIKE FORD TERRY CRANSTON This year's baseball team made up of six seniors, four juniors, and two sophomores, and under the coaching of Mr. Adum, finished fifth in the southern division. In spite of the daily practices at Armatage the boys' win-loss record was not very good. Manager Gene Dixson attributes this to poor hitting and fielding which their consistently good pitching could not offset. Denny Busyn’s two long home runs highlighted the season of play and Manuger Dixson's dunking in the shower highlighted the season of horseplay. PAUL JENSEN TOM CRECA and TOM HALPERN BOR GAMMELL and BOB BYERS STEVE RUFF and DICK PARSINNEN The Southwest Coif Team, captained by Peter Ucko and coached by Mr. Rudy Pedersen, made sure that 1061 was no exception to the fine legacy of golf teams Southwest has contributed through the years. The team finished with a health) 6-1 record, good for a high berth in the cit conference. In the district tournament three hoys qualified for the regional tournament: Pete I cko, Bruce Norback. and Rolf Olson. Pete Ucko qualified in this tournament for the state, and won a spot as one of the state’s “top twenty” in this event. Tributes would not be complete without mentioning Bob Sandler ami Tom Kasner who hel| ed the golf team reach the standings it did with their fine play. GOLF HOB MOORE DICK GROSSMAN GAIT. PETE UCKO BOB SANDLER TENNIS 0 MIKE SISCO NICK ROZ Under the leadership of Captain Jim Gregory and Coach Haahcim Southwest’s talented tennis team pushed high into the city conference standings. Boasting a T-.'l record the team finished in fourth place. Pine play was provided by singles players Jim Gregory. Boh Moore, and Gary Myers, and doubles players Dick Grossman and Shel Gutlmann. Nick Rozsa ami Mike Sisco. Next year’s team should provide another fine season with three returning lettermen heading the squad. • (.aptain Jim Gregor and Gary Myers were not availuMe lor pictures. TRACK “YOUR watch i wrong! “No! OUR watch is wrong! The Southwest track team, made up of a strong 50% of underclassmen and under the guidance of the Number I track coach in Minnesota. Al Halley, ran 1-2 in practically all meets. This 1961 track team was extremely strong in the shot put. discus, and mile run. Captain Phil Renslow. Reb Anderson, and John Thiel gave Southwest a sweep of the weight events in all meets while Rick Anderson and Steve Ringsrud were the top milers in the city. Southwest opened their season by finishing second in the Twin City Indoor meet with 39 points. Central was the winner with 45 points. This meet signalled the beginning of a list of records to be set by Phil Renslow. Phil. Reb. and John finished 1-2-3 in the shot with Renslow setting a record. The Indians followed the TC meet with a one sided dual victqry over Washburn. The following week the purple and white completely dominated the Southwest Rela s. Phil Renslow went 56' 9%” in the shot and 166' 1 in the discus. Southwest was second in the Kdina Invitational, losing bv one point to Kdina. In a mud contest at the Carleton meet Southwest was third, with Rick Anderson running a terrific mile. In the City meet Southwest finished third just point behind Central. We qualified Renslow. Thiel, Rick Anderson, and Steve Ringsrud for the State meet. In the State meet the Indians again finished near the top. Phil Renslow was a double winner and John Thiel placed second in the discus. This track season was marked by fine performances by other seniors such as Hick Purricr. Terry Amerson, Dave Thorn. John Wagner, and Dick Gregory. After confused loading, sardine-like packing, and excited “can-Icome-too's” the trip began. Eleven bedraggled hours later the weary singers arrived—in the heart of the night club district! The hotel rooms, already inhabited by bugs, ! eer bottles, dirt, and disorder, proved uninhabitable for people so at an early hour the choir checked out. After serenading schools all day they returned to sparkling, airy, comfortable rooms in one of the nicest hotels in town. Sightseeing—the tall Prudential Building, two museums—and entertainment—The Limelighters —and of course the rollicking party that lasted until 5 A.M. filled the rest of the trip. The bus ride home Sunday was highlighted by fatigue. BAND TRIP The annual hand tour found our Indian hand traveling by Greyhound bus to Madden’s Resort on Gull Lake after giving a concert at Anoka State Hospital and taking in a concert at Bloomington High School. The “Band overnight ' started with the buses coming a day early, the music eases being found in the choir room, and somebody forgetting the bass drum. But Howie's sign stayed on the bus. Much of the week-end was spent either on the golf course, where an abandoned golf cart provided excitement, or in the pool, where everyone, including onlookers, ended up. The band will never forget: Mr. Aaberg’s knees and his great dive into the pool I with his clothes on) . . . the old frontier town that was “closed . . . Wolfs jacket . . . the small porters in the inn . . . nobody to open the school . . . underclassmen ... the wonderful vacation at Madden's after a long successful year. The following year, with more experience, the tankers took both the City and District titles. This double championship was repeated again this year.
