Firstly, to the artist who looks into and beyond reality in creating, who captures the imagination and emotion of his audience, and who helps us tq find relaxation in a world of turmoil. Then: to the engineer and designer who strive to combine function with aesthetic elements; to the writer who records, evaluates, and improves our society; to the scientist who discovers new means of bettering mankind; to the father and mother who create order and well-being in the home; to those people who bring worlds closer together; and lastly, to the creativity in you, for youth must meet the challenge of tomorrow. ADMINISTRATION TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF I960: The modern world is demanding, as never before, the ability to think, —to be creative. The machine is taking over the routine tasks that require only thoughtless repetition. Today the hand is merely the helper to the brain. Creative thinking and confidence in one's ability to carry out his ideas are important ingredients of today's success. It is, therefore, very appropriate that the Class of 1960 has chosen creativity as the theme for its Wagistanian. Best of wishes, R. H. Classon 6 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL We are fortunate this year to have Mr. C. H. Meixner as our new assistant principal. Although some of us have not had the opportunity to know him personally, we certainly appreciate all the work he has done for Southwest. His many responsibilities make him one of the busiest persons in the school. We hope that he will continue to find features of Southwest which please him. FACULTY COUNCIL 7 SEATED: C. H. Meixner, A. Witherow, R. H. Claston, Principal, O. Welch. STANDING: P. Ford. C. Pearson, K. Ulhorn. Not Pictured: F. Rogers. COUNSELORS MR. WARNER Boys' Counselor We are privileged to have three well qualified counselors to help the students of Southwest with their educational and personal problems. They have a difficult, but rewarding job. The Junior High Counselor, Miss Magnusson, assists both boys and girls of the Junior High. She is a capable teacher and an able counselor. Miss Brinley is known by all the Southwest girls for her tireless efforts in guidance. The endless line of students outside her office indicates the value of her advice. The position of Boys' Counselor in the Senior High is held by Mr. Warner. His interest in school activities makes him a competent advisor for A.F.S. Throughout the year, Miss Brinley and Mr. Warner help the seniors with their college plans. There are many tests which the seniors must take to qualify for college, and the counselors have a responsibility in guiding them to a correct decision. The seniors greatly appreciate this help. 8 OFFICE STAFF Mrs. McArdle, Mrs. Christensen, Mr . Carrow, Mrs. Mann, Mis Gordon, Mr . Carlion. This was an outstanding achievement for our team, which lacked experience and material at the outset of the season. This year's team was led by our three captains: Bob Martin, Curt Johnson, and Steve Nash. Coach Art Fredrickson and his staff did a tremendous job in putting the team back on the winning road. One of our captains. Curt Johnson, was honored on the All-City first team. Team members John Hill, Jack Bestrom, and Harry Monahan were chosen for the second team. In contrast to former years, however, there were no individual standouts. This winning season was a product of 100% team cooperation. Congratulations are certainly deserved by the team and coaching staff for doing an excellent job over the past season. Bob Martin, Steve N« h, Coach Fredrickson, and Curt Johnson. The Indians turned in a 4-6 conference record, which included several heartbreaking setbacks. Captains Bob Martin and Ken Lehmann provided fine leadership and Coach Walt Williams did a superb job in developing the team. Our two guards were both honored on the all-city selections, with John Dunn selected for the first team and Bob Martin receiving honorable mention. This season saw the Indians win ten and lose nine. The highlight of the season was probably the 49 to 36 victory over highly ranked Roosevelt. Next year should prove successful as three regulars are returning. They are: all-city guard, John Dunn; Jack Hagberg, and John Wagner. These, along with several other promising underclassmen, should fill out the roster and form a strong team next year. P ul Witsoe. The pucksters then lost two games, but finished the regular season strongly by defeating Central and Marshall, losing to a powerful Washburn team, and tying City Champion Henry. Under the leadership of Coach Al Halley and Co-Captains Bob Newman and Tom McCue, the team started the season by running a perfect score against St. Louis Park. The following week brought together Southwest and Roosevelt in what many believed to be the greatest meet ever to bo run in Minnesota. Southwest was edged by only three points while both teams put out tremendous efforts. In the following weeks, under standout performances by Bob Newman, Tom McCue, Rick Anderson. Dick England, Joe Thorstenson, Steve Ringsrud, and Marshall Garncau, the Southwest Harriers defeated West. Washburn Edison, and St. James. Then, after a poor showing at the Swain Invitational in Duluth, the Indians went on to win the State Championship. To make the season even more successful. Bob Newman became the individual State Champion. Returning lettermen include Captain-elect, Rick Anderson. Steve Ringsrud, Howie Jacobson, Dick Butler, Marshall Garneau, and Joe Nelson. The music department received the proceeds from the carnival, which amounted to approximately six hundred dollars. Drake University, in Des Moines, Iowa, was the host to the choir during their annual trip. A few weeks later our choir returned the courtesy by being hosts to the Drake choir. The year was finished in grand style when the choir presented a totally new and best ever Spring Concert, which included old favorites and many semi-popular and dramatic songs. CHOIR AND BAND TRIPS CHOIR TRIP The Choir's annual three day Vacation was spent in Des Moines, Iowa, this year. Soft living, good food, a rousing party, and the presentation of a couple of concerts comprised the activities. BAND TRIP Minnesota's northern resort area was the destination of Southwest's Concert Band on its trip. Izaty's plentiful food and easy comfort, and the presence of much water highlighted the trip. CLASS PLAY The Man Who Came to Dinner, one of Southwest's most successful senior class plays, was presented on the nights of April 6 and 7. The members of the cast were: Mrs. Stanley ________ Miss Preen___________ Richard Stanley .. June Stanley--------- John ________________ Sarah ..... Airs. McCutchcon Mrs. Dexter__________ Air. Bluff, bearded Sheridan Whiteside had things continuously in an uproar with his imperious commands, roaring voice, and frowning countenance. Due to his terrifying presence, the Stanley household was permanently dislocated, two romances blossomed, and the schemes of a Hollywood actress were foiled. The play was enlightened by such occurrences as: the visit of Professor Metz, the world's greatest authority on insect life, numerous appearances of Doc Bradley, a noteworthy author, and the incomparable Banjo. Under the leadership of Mr. Engdahl, the entire cast turned in excellent portrayals of their respective characters. 1960 JUNIOR SENIOR PROM BASEBALL The Indian Baseball Team finished the season with a 4-6 win-loss record, which put them in third place in the southern division. This year's team was led by several experienced seniors plus an unusually fine group of juniors. Seniors were. Curt Johnson (captain), Bob Martin, Ken Lehmann, Steve Nash, Harry Monahan, Rick Kasner, and Dick Fischer. Denny Busyn, Tom Murray, Tim Holmes, John Dunn, and Bill Carlson are all returning to bolster next year's squad. Undoubtedly the highlight of the year was the second game with South. In this thriller the Indians came from an eight to three deficit in the sixth inning to defeat the Tigers ten to eight. CAPTAIN CURT JOHNSON KEN LEHMANN SOPHOMORE TEAM STEVE NASH RICK KASNER DICK FISCHER BOB MARTIN HARRY MONAHAN HUGH McCONNEL FIRST ROW: T. Grega, T. Katnar, D. Partsinen, J. Nelson, T. Browning, R. TENNIS Captain Steve Matthews and the Tennis Team showed the winning spirit as they gained a 6-4 win-loss record. The Indian netmen were coached by Mr. Haaheim who claims that the '61 squad should be as strong or stronger than teams in previous years if several promising underclassmen live up to expectations. These returning underclassmen are Jim Gregory, Bob Moore, and Gary Meyers. CAPTAIN STEVE MATTHEWS DAVE HENDRICKSON ROGER HAGON GOLF The golf squad can again boast of a fine record. The leadership was supplied by Captain Bruce Kronick and Coach Rudy Pedersen. Team members included Dave Hendrikson, Rick Kas-ner, Peter Ucko, Bob Sandler, and Bruce Norback. Wins over Central, West, Henry, Marshall, Vocational, and South made the 1960 season a success. DAVE ANDERSON RICK KASNER Mr. Hall«y and Captain Joe Thors enson BOB NEWMAN FRED CASPERSEN TRACK The past track season at Southwest, although not as successful as years before did show quite a few high points. The first week of the season the Indians won the Twin City Indoor. Tom McCue in the 880, Bob Newman in the mile, and Dick Purrier in the Pole Vault took first places. This meet showed the results of the boys' hard work during the month of March under Mr. Halley's able direction and Captain Joe Thorstenson's enthusiasm. In later weeks the boys downed Edison and Shattuck before losing to Washburn. Then followed a victory at the Annual Southwest Relays, a second at the Edina Invitational, and a second and third respectively in the City Relays and the City meet. In the. State meet a week later Southwest, with only two boys entered, finished well considering the number of entries. Phil Renslow, a junior, sailed the discus to a third place, and Bob Newman became the State Champ in the mile run. The team championship went to Minneapolis Central. DICK ENGLAND CHUCK IIDDIE TOM McCUE DICK PURRIER PHIL RENSLOW BILL TUETING REB ANDERSON OLYMPIC DAY The 1959-60 Girls' Athletic Association and Boys' Intramural Program was completed for the school year with Olympic Day.
