We ha spent four important years here, and the memories of friends, classwork, and numberless activities will never leave us. Because of this loyalty, we of the class of 1959 wish to dedicate this yearbook to a man who has done more than any other to make Southwest a school to remember with pride. That man is our principal. Mr. Robert Classon. The principal of a school has a difficult job. It is he who must coordinate the curriculum, faculty, and administration, which are consistently undergoing examination and improvement. We are fortunate to have such a tireless and selfless worker as Mr. Classon in this important position. His years of service have seen many advances in Southwest. Recently, the school was expanded to include a junior high with facilities for science, music, and athletics which are unexcelled in any other Minneapolis school. Southwest High School is an important part of our community. A high standard of achievement is expected of Southwest graduates, and Mr. Classon seeks to instill in each student a feeling of responsibility. SENIOR ELECTIONS SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Bruce Henricksen, Sergeant-at-Arms; Adele Garten, Secretary; Mike Daggett, Treasurer; Don Akenson. President; Mart Aldre, Vice-President, and Carolyn Holm, Sergeant-at-Arms. The success of any group depends greatly on its leadership. The importance of senior class officers is emphasized in the fall, when the class divides itself into two groups to campaign for the presidency. The contest between Don Akenson and Mart Aldre this year was a lively one, vith Don ending as victor. The Senior Council is made up of two representatives from each senior homeroom who serve as temporary leaders until the officers are elected, and continue to serve as committee heads throughout the year. Unlike other years, the senior homerooms have been designated as committees for graduation planning. This has taken the place of the usual senior advisory. Our advisor, Mr. Pedersen, has been a wonderful help, always being eager to help in plans and ideas. SENIOR COUNCIL NIOR COUNCIL—SEATED: B. Ncmer. S. Burroughs. E. Grossman, B. Malkcrson. S. We had many long and tedious rehearsals, hut we knew the play was worth it after the night of our first performance. We were surprised that our own classmates could portray the people in Grover's Corners so realistically and we were deeply moved by Emily’s final speech. The presentation of this play helped many of us to hesitate a moment when thinking of life. Besides being educational, there are many vivid memories that will remain with us: Vocational, the endless pantomime, our comic—Jim Hart, words like—Mezozoic and heliotrope, the cast party, musty clothes, smell of greasepaint, the last panic of waiting for our cue before going on stage, and of course our inspiring director, Mr. Engdahl. RED CROSS Throughout the year representatives from every seventh, eighth, and ninth grade homeroom meet every other Monday to organize and send gift boxes, chests, and “cheer boxes” overseas and to people in our oVn country. Once a month the president, Linda Anderson, and the all-city representative, Cami Miller, meet with the representatives from other schools in the Chapter House. Other officers are Diane Nelson, vice-president; Barbara Burns, secretary; and Mary Lynn Aim-quist, treasurer. N. Snell, B. Nordland, J. Bertram, D. Tueting. STUDENT COUNCIL The purpose of this organization is to build leadership in the junior high through representation of homerooms and to co-ordinate activities carried on in the junior high. These activities include class parties, rummage sales, ticket sales and others. Officers of this group are Jack Bestrom, president; Bob Nordland, vice-president; Nancy Snell, secretary; and Doug Tueting, treasurer. ARROW Included in every other edition of the Southwest Arrow is a Junior High Section. Every student in the junior high can be a reporter and may submit stories, interesting facts and news. With the help of Sharon Swanson, a few Junior high students select and rewrite the articles and send them to press. This is a worthwhile experience as they prepare themselves for full-time work on the Arrow. FIRST ROW: B. Burns. D. Nelson. L. Anderson. M. Almquist, M Severson. SECOND ROW: P. Ford, I. Zrhringer, J. The team managers are a group of boys who represent their seventh and eighth grade homerooms for the entire year. Their duties are to keep the team’s schedule up to date, record scores of games and keep the scorebook complete. The officials club consists of nine ninth graders. These boys officiate intramural games, supervise informal activities, maintain equipment, and supplies and co-ordinate the playing schedule. At the end of each sport's season, team members elect a best player. This award is based on teamwork, sportsmanship, attendance, and playing ability. KNEELING: S. Ilealv. M. Knox. R. Nemer. J. Our team is known to have the best defensive team in the state. Following a fine showing against Washburn in the preview, the Indians scored wins over Marshall, Central, and North. After drubbing Vocational, the gridders continued the season by winning hard-fought games over South and West, and then ended the season with a scoreless tie against a strong Roosevelt team. Although Southwest completely out-played Roosevelt and was in their territory many times, they could not score. Besides the three seniors chosen on the All-City Team. Southwest also can boast of junior. Curt Johnson, named to the All-City Second Team. Curt, with Gary Nash and Bob Martin, has been elected by this year’s team as football captains for next season. The coaches, faculty, and student body wish to congratulate the team for their hard work and desire which resulted in the city championship. Special congratulations should go to our coach Art Fredrickson who has done a commendable job since he came to Southwest two years ago. FIRST ROW: J. Rice, G. Bestrom, B. Rishovd, D. Anderson, A. Because of scheduling difficulties, the job coordination was an especially difficult one. This job fell to the co-editors, Betsy Myers and Phyliss Hall. Due to their efficiency and hard work, hazards were overcome and the staff grew into the unity of mutual responsibilities. During each hour of the school day, a part of the staff could be found in the annual room working on assignments. The entire staff could only be together on w’eekends. With the help of our advisor, Mr. McDonough, we present this yearbook to you,—recording your memories of 1958-59 in permanent form. Top—Mr. McDonough and CO-EDITORS Phyliss Hall and Betsy Myers. Because of several innovations at Southwest, the staff has no period together. Most of the work is done outside of school, but Arrow periods are still useful for learning new card games, last minute studying, and finishing up lunch. We’ll always remember the rush for deadlines, Tom wheedling out ad spoce from the editors, and fitting large stories into small spaces. Linda leaves one suggestion for future years. This year has proved to be exceptionally successful, but not without a lot of hard work to back it up. A tense and strenuous school night was put out by the choir in their recording session. The result was a hit record not only in the Minneapolis area, but throughout the nation. During the Christmas season, the choir serenaded many downtown businesses with seasonal songs. The Annual Christmas Concert was highlighted by the choir’s presentation of “The Song of Christmas.” THE CRESCENDOS: Phyllis Hall, Judy Green, and Dorothy Dietz. 102 Dahle’s gal Friday. HOW 1: T. The evcr-popular Pie Throw and Kangaroo Court were other main attractions. The proceeds of the carnival go towards facilities for the music department. In the spring of the year, there are always hopes of a trip and this year is no exception. As soon as permission is given and a destination is found, the choir will be busily planning. The Annual Spring Concert is the final test of the quality of the choir and to make it the best ever, Mr. Dahle has formulated some wonderful ideas. Intense daily rehearsals are being held in order to make his dreams a reality. OFFICERS: D. Dietz. M. Macgowan. L. Miller. J. Hutchins, S.. SECTION LEADERS: J. Green. B. Slais. S. Isham. J. BAND Our Southwest Band, under the direction of Mr. Robert Olson, is becoming a source of increasing pride. They had a very eventful year, including numerous concerts. We are indebted to them for their support and enthusiasm at our football and basketball games. The official duties of the band are carried out by the officers of the group. These people are elected by their own fellow band members and these competent people have given extra time and service to the band as well as to the school. 'Fulurc Benny Goodmans? J. Sander . BAND It’s not an easy undertaking to manage and coordinate this large band through sixty or seventy performances throughout the year. This job entails the handling of three and four hundred sheets of music every week and preparing uniforms and instruments for concerts. Without the aid of the Band Staff, it would be impossible to keep the hand routine working smoothly. The hand has become an increasingly important part of our music department. We certainly are anticipating their return next year for their music is a constant source of enjoyment and entertainment. “Anticipation personified. “Seventy-six trombones. SEATED: B. Morast. We hope Southwest High School has helped you prepare for that all-important future. We would recommend that you continue your preparation by enrolling in one of the many colleges or vocational schools in our area. The future belongs to those who prepare for it. Best of success in your chosen work. 118 R. H.
