For all of us, our busy daily existence follows an ordered pattern, geared to the tick of a clock. In living this modern life, we mark the passage of time, time which holds many pleasant memories for each one of us. As students, many such experiences occur during the school year. They are not, necessarily, the special events which highlight the school season. More often, we believe, they are the individual candid occurrences which, as they punctuate the daily routine and slow down the clock, make .life worth living. Join us now as we turn back the time and recall some of the pleasant experiences of the past year. is dedicated to you. your warmth, rheerfulne- . t only to outhWest and its he students as individuals. m you are more than just a a friend who is sincereW ■pfoldems of your ' Indents. our way of saving ' Thank job you have done To the graduating class of 1958 In keeping with your Wagistanian theme, “Time.” I would call your attention to “The Lesson of the Water Mill,” by Sarah Doudney. Listen to the water mill Through the livelong day How the clanking of the wheel Wears the hours away; And a proverb haunts my mind As a spell is cast; “The mill will never grind With water that has passed.” Take the lesson to thyself Loving heart and true; Golden years are fleeting by. Youth is passing, too; Learn to make the most of life; Lose no happy day; 'Time will never bring thee back Chances swept away. 6 Best wishes for your future success. R. H. CLASSON Assistant Principal As boys’ counselor and advisor to ' Y, Mr. Warner is possibly one of the busiest members of the faculty, yet he always has time to give his expert sel. For those of us who are not acquainted with at least one of the many duties of Mr. Straiton, our only personal contact with him would seem to be in the form of a warm smile and a friendly greeting. However, we are all in constant contact with the products of his hard work. As Assistant Principal, the man behind the scenes, he has proved himself to be a devoted member of the Southwest community, a capable advisor to Mr. Classon, and a friend to all whose privilege it is to know Girls’ Counselor It is a commonly accepted truth that the least likely place to find Miss Brinley is in her office. This is easily explained by the deep interest she has in problems. 0 her girls and their 7 MRS. MAGNUSSON Junior and Senior High life, despite their individual differences, are similar in one respect—they both pose problems which require outside help to solve. This year we welcome Mrs. Magnusson as our new Junior High Counselor. Special Services MRS. CHAPMAN Once a week, our speech teacher comes to Southwest to assist those students who need extra help in this respect. Mrs. Chapman’s sincere interest in the problems of her students has won many friends. MRS. HENRICKSEN Southwest is one of the few schools in the city which has a special service teacher. Her duties are to assist the school in handling cases of discipline beyond the scope of the classroom. Mrs. Henricksen, our S.S.T., also serves us very capably as the School Nurse. Intramurals The boys’ Intramural program, under the direction of Mr. Ford and Mr. Banks, is an outgrowth of the regular physical education program. All boys are encouraged to participate and do so voluntarily. The members of the various home rooms organize their teams, elect their team captains and elect a team manager. The manager is responsible for keeping his teammates informed of the schedule and maintaining the team records. The annual Olympic Day is also a pari of the Intramural Program. Yup! Coach Art Fredrickson stated that he felt his first team was equal to that of any school in the city. The Indians seemed to prove the truth of this statement with a fine showing against Central in Preview and by outplaying Henry and South, two of the top teams in the city, in the first half, only to be worn down by the superior numbers of the opposition in the final minutes of the game. After drubbing Vocational, the gridders played their poorest football of the season in losing to Washburn and Roosevelt. The boys came back, however, to nip Edison and spoil their homecoming. Southwest came from behind to defeat a good West team the following week. The most welcome victory of the season came as the fired up Indians beat Forest Lake, undefeated in two years of play, in a nonconference game. After this game, the coaches and players agreed that the '57 season had been a most successful one. Captains EMO and JIM Third row: I). Fike, I). Best. F. Schmuckcr. S. Wolf, L. Goddard, M. McGowan. The Indians, behind Dick Hume, their top scorer and guard on the second all-city team, and Captain Bill Beha, won four games during the conference season and gave every opponent a good game. THE MAINSPRINGS Suellen Kruse Mr. Bart McDonough Annual An annual staff is composed of a number of dissimilar individuals who share a common interest—a small insignificant yearly publication. One invigorating year is spent, gossiping, brainstorming, and working toward their common goal. Saturdays bear a special significance. It is on this day of days that the sum total of inventive genius comes to the fore, and the Annual is written. This year’s theme, time, was the result of six weeks of diligent evaluation of competitive material and worthless individual suggestions. We think it to be most appropriate. We hope you will find this publication worthy of your perusal. In the words of a contemporary philosopher, “Thought makes men wise. Wisdom makes life endurable.’’—Good luck! During the year, the staff produced 10 issues of the Arrow, each one of which was full of interesting articles, pictures, and features. After the first few weeks, it seemed that progress was being made as even the student director began to vociferate with a decided brogue, characteristic of the “King’s English.” The ensuing weeks also proved highly profitable for a small group who congregated between scenes to play “whist.” On December 5 and 6, the new result of 2 months of activity was viewed by a capacity crowd who acclaimed the final production one of the finest presented by Southwest students. Under this program, our high school students are offered an opportunity to travel abroad and to live with an adopted family for approximately six weeks. This year, three Southwest students were privileged to participate in this program. Dorothy Loofbourow spent the summer in Germany, while Bill Kosrnas and Jack Sandberg visited Greece. Girls’ State Margie Benjamin spent one week with 135 other girls from the state “living government. The girls were divided into three parties, through which district, city, and state officers were elect ed. Margie held the office of City Treasurer. Boys’ State Bob Elo and Tom Hess lived on the U. of M. Farm Campus for a week. The boys were divided into par ties and had their hot campaigns and elections. Bob was elected Municipal Court Judge. He resigned to run for County attorney, but was defeated. American Field Service In retrospect, our community plays host to students from abroad for the duration of the school year during which time they live with a family in the school district. Southwest was privileged to have, as members of the student body. Carmen “Menchu” Bnraza from Spain, and “Charley Bungo Ito from Japan. The activities of the Service do indeed exemplify its motto—“Walk together, talk together. 0 ye peoples of the earth. Then, and only then, shall ye have peace.” 85 Senior Memories Do you remember- When we, as timid freshmen, looked up to the snobbish sophomores . . . getting lost in the then “huge” building . . . meeting the faculty . . . the first encounter with a plate lunch . . . going to State competition in hockey . . . the succession of teachers in Miss Holmberg’s Algebra class . . . first year Latin ... the first Homecoming and coronation of Queen Mama Williamson ... the mixed emotions when the Choir membership list was posted . . . re-writing Ivanhoe for Holliday ... the end of the year as the underclassmen moved up a notch and a few rows in the auditorium . . . looking down on the timid freshmen as snobbish sophomores . . . dissecting frogs, worms, and grasshoppers in Biology . . . the screams of delight as missing components turned up at lunch . . . In Memoriam • • • Jack Sandberg Aesop once said, “Beware of grasping at the shadows for fear of losing the substance. It is natural when the unexplainable occurs to “Grasp at the shadows the secondary effects of the act itself—in an attempt to explain that which we do not understand. The loss of a friend occasions such a reaction as we who knew Jack can well remember. In shadows we can only find flickering images of life itself. We find an insight into the substance of life in the poem. “To an Athlete Dying Young” by A. E. Housman. Smart lad. to slip betimes away from fields where glory does not stay. And early though the laurel grows It withers quicker than the rose. Now you will not swell the rout Of lads that wore their honors out. Runners whom renown outran And the name died before the man. Jack was a friend to all who knew him and a leader by example of character His character and the spiritual laurels which he won in the minds of his friend are now preserved in the memories which his acts occasioned. 87 DAVID ANDERSON “Dave” “Do unto others before others do unto, you.
