SOUTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL Minneapolis, Minnesota MHC Walking down the aisle on that graduation night in June, memories of many events crowded our minds. Some pleasant, some sad. Recalling the road we'd traveled, we could almost see the footprints made by the many different kinds of shoes that had led us up to graduation. The polished oxfords and graceful pumps in which we had danced at our first formal; The teacher's shoes, which we now realized, weren't very different from the comfortable loafers and saddle shoes which had carried us from class to class,- The spiked football shoes, flashing skates, and grimy tennis shoes in which we had practiced, played, and won many athletic contests. For the most part, the skates, the tennis shoes and the loafers had seen their day, and would be discarded, but the memories that they had helped us create would stay fresh in our minds for years to come. The graduation exercises were almost over. As we walked slowly down the steps to receive our diplomas, we glanced down at our shoes —the shoes that were now carrying us out of childhood and into life. Words always seem so ineffectual when trying to express gratitude for wonderful learning experiences and the warm friendship of a sympathetic teacher. Mrs. Haaland, who recently resigned her position as a teacher of English, took part in many other activities here. Among these were the Guidance Committee, Faculty Council, P.T.A. representative, Text Book Committee, Social Studies Department Chairman, and Y-Teen Advisor. All those who ever knew her will never forget what a wonderful friend and advisor she was and will join with us in a deep and heartfelt Thank You! 4 5 To The 1957 Graduating Class: He was flying too low, so the officers said. He crashed on the dark mountain's mass; If his sights had been lifted to loftier course, His ship had the power to pass These lines written by Leslie A. AAcRill carry a word of warning as well as a word of encouragement to all who leave high school classrooms to launch forth on the sky-ways of life. It has been the purpose of us on the faculty to develop your power to pass as well as to help lift your sights to the loftier course. Your success in life will depend much upon how well these objectives have or can be realized. 6 Best of wishes, R. H. CLASSON Assistant Principal The task of dealing with those who get into trouble and punishing guilty persons is often a very unpleasant duty. However, our new Assistant Principal has a way of speaking as a true friend and a sympathetic advisor. When Mr. Straiton introduced himself to us in the first auditorium last fall, we all knew by his humble and yet dignified manner that he was, as the boys said, a good guy. Mr. Straiton has lived up to our first impression by the way he has handled all his duties and responsibilities, and made so many friends. Miss Brinley and Mr. Warner, pictured below, serve the school in many ways. Aside from their duties as counselors, Mr. Warner advises the boys' Hi-Y Clubs, and Miss Brinley is advisor to the girls' clubs. Counselors 7 Faculty Council Mrs. Boylan, Mr. Weydt, Miss Lindow, Mr. Classon, Mr. Pedersen, Mr. Bjorlin, Mrs. Kohler. This year's Faculty Council has an extra-special job because of the New Addition. They have been an invaluable aid to the principal in his difficult job of running the school smoothly. We thank them all for their unselfish efforts. 8 WILLIAM ADAM Social Studies, Assistant Football Coach, Head Baseball Coach. MRS. GRACE T. BARSNESS History, English, Mathematics. Such is the cry of boss lady Karol Ericson as another sixth hour begins in room two. Immediately the Annual Staff settles down to the serious business of finding Gloria's glasses, getting Joanne out of the clusit, retrieving Mary from the phone, and closing the windows to guard against the invasion of Arrow spies and kids from sixth hour study (who usually manage to get in anyway). This usually leaves at least five minutes at the end of the hour for frivolous things such as drawing layouts and writing copy. But the staff wasn't always so carefree. They had their problems, too. Picture Gloria, the layout editor, struggling to fit big square photos into little round spaces. Then there was Mary, the photography editor, running around with her borrowed Polaroid, getting the big square pictures for Gloria. Or Nancy, the copy editor, trying to get copy out of the official Annual typewriter, with its blank keys. (Speaking of copy, a special thanks goes to the athletic captains who took time out of their studies to help us write the sports stories.) And Karol, the editor, watching over them all, audibly praying that the deadlines would be met... . . . And the deadlines were met, the result being this yearbook, of which the staff is very proud. They hope that you will be proud of it, too. Okay kids, today we're going to work I KAROL ERICSON. Editor m-chitf. 32 Photographer extraordinary. MARY IANGSAM. Photography Editor let'i e now . . . The schedule of tournaments included South St. Paul, Eau Claire, Concordia, Macalaster, Alexander Ramsey, and Cambridge. The season was climaxed with the regional debate at Hopkins where the team placed fourth and just missed going to the state. Drama Club A new club was organized this year by President, Nancy Matthews, and advisor, Frank Engdahl. Enthused students, interested in dramatics, took part in many activities throughout the school year, such as Southwest's first SHOW-NITE, for which the club also took charge of ticket sales. The members have gained valuable experience in staging, makeup, and costuming and they are all very proud to be charter members of Southwest's first Drama Club. First row: R. Phillip , I. Gats, S. Mr. Witzman's emerald-green radio provided inspiration for many Arrow stories. Mr. Witzman, the Staff's advisor, seemed to feel his music box worked best when Elvis Presley wes vocalizing one of the current hits. Along with ell the fun, there was e lot of hard work involved in putting out the school paper. The efforts of the Staff members have been repaid as The Southwest Arrow is recognized as being one of the finost papers in the state. Arrow Staff In spite of fluctuating temperatures throughout the rest of the school, the arrow room mercury remained at a steady 85 degrees the year round. Hank Witta felt this was one of the This year's Arrow Staff gained fame for their excellent school paper as well as for their great pizza parties. The last two days before every deadline of the tri-weekly paper were spent in feverish haste as everything was proofread and re-written. Student Council For the many well-planned and successful school activities this year, our Senior High Student Council deserves much credit. With Ed Dratz presiding, and Mr. Haaheim as advisor, the council discussed major problems with a minimum of turmoil. The Council was composed of one representative from each senior high advisory, our two exchange students, temporary special committee chairmen, and representatives from the main school clubs. One of the big projects on the '56-'57 calendar was the Youth Conference with students of Southwest and eleven neighboring schools participating. The topic of discussion was The Teen-Age Code. Under Student Council planning and organizing, we enjoyed our first Sno-Day, and several dances throughout the year, including homecoming, Christmas, Soc-Hop, and the Turn-Table Turn-About. Under the leadership of co-chairmen Sharon Richardson and Karol Ericson, eleven hard-working committees organized a coronation, games, a faculty-varsity broom-ball game, sliding, skating, skiing, and tobogganing all to take place at Glenwood Chalet. In the evening, a tired and happy bunch attended the very successful dance at school. This Southwest first was well received by the teachers and students alike and proved to be lots of fun for all. We all hope that Sno-Day may become an established custom in the years to come. Buses and confusion.” It's Wayne! I'm a COP? Senior Girls7 Clubs Since their freshman year the girls of Senior Club III have had many wonderful times and made lasting friendships within the club. They've planned numerous parties throughout the years, including a Blind Date Party, which proved very interesting. Many of the memories which these girls will hold of their high school fun will be connected with Senior Club III. The girls of Kai-Zetz, Senior Club II, will never forget the things they've done together. All the slumber parties, lawn parties, picnics, progressive dinners, the Match-Me-Hop, the ankle bracelets, the great cabin party they planned, the noisy meetings and ridiculous minutes, the open houses at the Mpls. Youth Center, and most of all—the fame of having more joints than any other club in the city. Without pay, and hardly a thank you from fellow students, these kids do their jobs each day, to help keep our lunchroom, halls, library, office, stage and visual aids running smoothly. At any hour of the day, you may see a hall guard chasing some unwary freshman away from the telephone in the front hall, a long-suffering member of the visual aids crew, quietly yawning through a movie which he is only seeing for the fifth time, or some unhappy lunchroom monitor hunting through pails of garbage for lost silverware. This year the busy choir participated in five concerts at various city churches, a concert at Adath Jeshurun Synagogue, a joint concert with Roosevelt's outstanding choir, a presentation for the Minneapolis Kiwanis Club, Baccalaureate, the traditional Song of Christmas on television and at school, and a Spring Concert. Hundreds of students and alumni watched the football team Boot the Birds in the first victorious homecoming game the seniors had seen. Oh, we'll never get it done on time, was the frequent lament of Kathy Wittke and Bill Van Santen, general co-chairmen of homecoming. But surprisingly, by the morning of October 19, all preparations had been somehow completed, and everyone agreed that this was the greatest homecoming in years. The senior girls started the day's festivities with an early breakfast, and the boys, with their powder paint, decorated all of the cars in the parking lot. Finally fifth period came and the program began. Our pretty queen finalists, Karol Ericson, Carol Girard, Mary Langsam, Joanne Renslow, and Karin Sonderegger, were escorted to the stage. We all held our breath and the suspense grew as Sue Scott, the 1956 Homecoming Queen, strolled back and forth around the girls. A loi d burst of applause and cheering broke the silence as Sue placed the crown on Karin Sonderegger. The royalty took their box seats on the stage and the show began. There were many professional acts climaxed with a football dance by a group of senior girls who had considerable difficulty keeping their pants up. Mr. Olsen's band led the big parade down to the football field where we proudly watched our team beat Marshall 14 to 13. The very successful dance at school that evening brought the day's excitement to a tired, but happy, ending. Our rugged Co-Captains TONY OLSEN, HANK WITTA Football It looked like a very long season for Coach Fredrickson and his Indian eleven when the grid season ended this fall. Pre-season injuries hurt the Southwest team badly and consequently, with their small squad, they dropped the first four games. But an extra week of rest, due to a bye, was all the gridders needed and came back to win the homecoming game 13-12. The team's co-captains, Tony Olsen and Hank Witta, kept up the high spirit and led the team to finish in fifth place in the city with three victories against four losses. Other players who were a big factor in the school's best record since 1951 were Ed Porter, Bill Colby, and all-city election, and junior fullback Emo Kurtz. Next year's team will be led by co-captains elect, Jim Bonneville and Emo Kurtz. 60 SCORES Southwest.......... 7 Southwest M Southwest ......... 6 Southwest 7 Southwest 13 Southwest .........19 Southwest ......... 20 20 Roosevelt 41 Henry 42 Washburn 35 Marshall 12 Central 17 North 7 Suffering from the sideline Mr. Adam, Mr. Fredrickton, Fries, Hart, Swanton, Dobbin . This graduating contingent headed by the only two-year state champ in the business, Wayne Sullwold, extends their best wishes for a successful '57 season to next year's powerful team. He was the leading scorer for the tankers, and also second in the City Meet for the 100 yd. backstroke. The team, itself, had a very respectable season, winning three of the 10 city meets. Victories were won over Central, Vocational, and South. Bill VanSanten, the acting captain, and Paul Sheehan also did a fine job in making Coach Ulhorn's first season a successful one. Hopes for next year's team look toward the three returning lettermen, Jerry Challman, Paul Sheehan, and Pete Lund. The only thing that stood between the bucketeers and consistent winning was the lack of effective rebounding power. Although Southwest's basketball record this year wasn't bright, next year's possibilities are. The Indians lost their three opening games by slim margins which could easily have gone the other way and changed the outlook of the entire season. Led by their captain, Scott Bertas, the team put up lots of scrap before losing these three games by a combined total of twelve points. The heart-breaker of the season was the Washburn game which was drawn into two over times before the Millers made the winning bucket. The returning eight lettermen, bolstered by some promising underclassmen, will form a strong nucleus for next year's team. 64 First row: G«org« Beslrom, Warren Hanson, Dave Swenson, Dick Einan, Bill Beha, Bruce Hendrickson, Wayne Swanson. In the title game against South the best they could do was a 1-1 tie, and virtually the Tigers won the title by one point margin over the second place Indians. Captain Wayne Meredith and goalie Mike Haley were picked on the all-city team. Gump Haley was also voted by his teammates as the most valuable player for the Indians. Scarcely a single rehearsal went by without at least one amusing incident, such as: Mark's honey-selling attempts, casual Warren keeping everyone in stitches, Iric calling out fines for breaks which were inevitable when Barb practiced her scream, everyone making bets on whether the romance between Madge and Steve was for real, and Mr. Engdahl condoning eating during rehearsals only when he got some too. You know, I almost killed Mama once. Mark Ptashne, Nancy Matthews The play, itself, concerns the man who wants a little place in the country. His struggle to make his dream materialize provides the plot for this play. Everyone knew that their efforts had paid off in success when the packed house vibrated with laughter and applause during both performances. The many Class Play Committees, without which the play could not have been presented, share with the cast and Mr. Engdahl the community's recognition of their truly professional play.
