WAGISTANI AN PUBLISHED BY 1956 ANNUAL STAFF SOUTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS 10, MINNESOTA Sandy Prieve Barbara Anderson Art Editor Copy Editors Nancy Rigg Arlene Wittke Layout Editor Karen Bonhus Norman Watt Business Manager Mr. McDonough Advisor Dedication To Mr. Halley, We. the senior class, dedicate our 1956 Wagis-tanian to a person who has made Southwest a better school. Besides being Assistant to the Principal, cross-country and track coach, and teacher of advanced math, Mr. Halley has taken time to help many individuals in many ways. His phenomenal record of track and cross-country winnings has been a source of extreme pride to Southwest. Faculty Council The Faculty Council is an advisory group to our principal. We appreciate the work of this group which helps to make the school run smoothly. t To the Members of the 1956 Graduating Class: On my high school commencement night many years ago. a member of the faculty handed each member of our graduating class a slip of paper on which was the following message: There is no magic in a diploma. There is no guarantee of wisdom in a college degree. The lexicographers tell us that a diploma confers a privilege, an honor, or a power. A privilege is of little significance unless we avail ourselves of it. An honor is meaningless unless we live it. A power is futile unless we exercise it. And to do these things, we must have that within us which mates it possible. They are not in the written paper. They are in the holder of it.” The truth of this message is as significant today as it was then. I hope it will mean as much to each of you as it did to me. Best of wishes. R. H. Nancy Rigg, Copy Editors. Where's the key? always starts the day off right. Amid gossip and jokes a few pictures are mounted, a little copy is written. As deadline time draws near many cries are heard: We need those pictures. Jay!' Won't someone please help me cut this? Oh! You kids! Work! We'll have to work this weekend again!' Norm, our business manager, oversaw the selling of homecoming buttons and book covers, and the sponsoring of the Football Opener. Many thanks to our advisor, Mr. McDonough, the student photographers. Mr. Segal of the Bureau of Engraving, Mr. Carlson of Lund Press. Lundgren Studios, and Dahl Bookbinders. Their assistance and patience were greatly appreciated. Whew! At least we have an annual! Also sparkling up the room are Freedy's clever witticisms. As always the staff's biggest job is to make the frequent deadlines. Despite confusion they always make them, and the paper always comes out better than the time before. Mr. Witzmon is to be commended for his fine job. We know it was no easy job replacing Mrs. Zittleman. The whole staff is to be praised for its many clever ideas, and for its Arrow firsts including the Arrow auditorium with the I go Arrow tags and the editions of Arroto which have added a lot to the school year. Impressive Instrumentalists Under the leadership of the new director, Mr. Robert Olson, the band has had one of the most successful years since it began. The main objective of the band has been to try and finance $6,000 for new uniforms which they hope to have next fall. This year the band played at football games and put on some successful field shows. After playing at South- west Night and auditoriums, the spring concert climaxed their busy year. The orchestra, also under the direction of O. B. Dahle. consists solely of strings. Because of this it has stressed individual talent through small ensemble and solo pieces. For a better understanding of music, they studied harmony and writing original pieces. M. Ptashnc. 0. Wilson. B. Felder. R. Steffy. L. Forsmann. A. Tollefson. C. Steffy. Mr. Dohle. Composed of junior and senior girls. Blue Tri has had many interesting programs throughout the year. A recognition service started the year's activities. Other events consisted of: service projects, a Christmas Tea for the mothers, a potluck supper, a discussion panel of Minnesota queens, and a camping weekend. An enthusiastic campaign for next year's officers and a senior farewell ended a busy year and helped make Blue Tri calendar an interesting one. Blue Tri Row I: M. McArthur. L. Lundgren, N. Larson, L. The office helpers answer the switchboard, sort mail, and run errands: the library helpers give up their study periods to help in the library: the V.A.C. crew takes care of running the movie projectors: the hall guards make sure that the halls are kept quiet during lunch; and the stage crew sets up scenery, operates things and generally helps with the technical end of productions such as the class play and the Christmas program. SPORTS Our Co-captains, Ron and Dave Gridiron Grapplers This year's team had a fair year with four wins and four losses, considering that they were plagued with injuries all year long. The team was at its best in the beginning of the year, defeating defending champion Washburn 20-6. going on to overpower ever powerful Austin 18-6. This game cost seven of the first eleven injuries. Three of the starting four baclcfields and many linemen were out of the line-up before the season was half over. The manpower continued to go down but the spirit and fight remained high, ending with a tie for fifth in the city. Row I: J. Newkirk. A. Fisher, F. Drew. T. Reichert. J. Straub. J. Morgan. T. Olson. The team was composed of many juniors and sophomores. Starters graduating from the team are Jack Prins. Jim Burroughs, and captain Tom Stillman. Although only a junior, Bill Carney will be swimming for Duluth Central next year which will certainly be a terrific addition to their team. Stepping into the captain's spot next year will be Jim New-house. We certainly hope Jim will be as successful as Tom has been this year. Coach Jacobs and Jim are looking forward to the coming season to show what the team can do. Special mention should go to Tommy for winning first place in city and state in the breaststroke. It was felt by many that if the first games had been played later, many of the close decisions would have been in the Indians' favor. Injuries and transfers were a deep blow to the progress. Mr. Joe Hutton, in his first year at Southwest, did an outstanding job. A combination of his potential and the new setup of the new addition promises to make basketball a winning sport in future years. Aces of the Ice This year’s hockey team didn’t do as well as some Southwest teams have done in the past. For what they lacked in size they made up in ability and spirit. The team consisted of a sophomore. 12 juniors and 2 seniors, Dave Rovick and Harry Hage-man. Captain Dave Rovick and next year's captain Wayne Meredith made the all-city team. The team won seven conference games and lost three by scores of 2 to I, and lost the playoff game to South 5-3. Mr. Halley was honored for his outstanding coaching. The Minneapolis relays brought more outstanding performances and another victory. Seniors bolstering this year's squad were: Ron McCombs, State shot-put champion: Dave Myers, State low hurdles champion; Frank Drew. State 440 champion; Dick Green.
