UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES . . . SPORTS . . . . SENIORS . . . . MR. WOHLFORD MR. McDONOUGH Dedication We take extreme pride in dedicating our 1955 Wagistanian to two teachers who have helped to make our school days richer and fuller. Our thanks to Mr. Paul Wohlford, who, after many successful years as hockey coach is about to retire. This year, under the able coaching and ieadership of Mr. Wohlford, the hockey team took second place in the State Tournament. We are grateful for the assistance and friendship of Mr. Bart McDonough, our new annual advisor.  C J To the Members of the 1955 Graduating Class: It was the noted author, lecturer and teacher, Dale Carnegie, who once said, ' ou can male more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you. This statement we would like to leave with you as important words to live by. We believe Dale Carnegie in this short statement has given an important key to success and happiness. We hope that your experience at Southwest High School has prepared you to make full use of this key and that your goals in life will include unselfish service and brotherhood to your fellow-men. Such is our tremendous need in these restless years. Best of wishes. C6] R. H. CLASSON Name: AL HALLEy Position: Assistant to the Principal. Advanced Math Activities: Cross Country Coach. Layout Ed.tor; Lynn McCann. Copy Editor. Annual Staff C'mon, you kids, we ve got a deadline, pleads Molly, wringing her hands. After several moments, the apathetic silence is broken by the dramatic voices of Lynn and Barb shrieking. This list is wrong, wrong, wrong! Electrified by this outburst, the rest of the staff plunge into action . . . razor blades flash and pictures fly (for a while). Under the direction of Dixon, our money-grubbing business manager, the staff sold book covers, homecoming buttons, pictures, and sponsored the Christmas dance. The staff would like to express their appreciation to their advisor, Mr. McDonough, the student photographers; and to thank Mr. Segal of the Bureau of Engraving, Mr. Carlson of Lund Press, the Lundgren Studio, and the Minneapolis Star and Tribune for their assistance. With mixed emotions we present the 1955 Wagistanian. STAFFâRow I: Molly McKcand Kay Hanson Sally Goodman. Row 2: Marcia Kamprath, Barbara Klelne. Kristin Okerlund. Dixon 8ond. C22 ⥠Arrow Staff The door of the Arrow room slams, and Bob Steele, the Arrow business manager, beats a retreat down the hall. He has just come out second best in a battle of wits with the rest of the staff. In another corner, cackling quietly to herself, we find Sonja Honsey (her feet as usual in the waste paper basket). The rest of the staff wanders about with a look of relief on their facesâthey've just met another deadline. Meanwhile, all through the school, eager students eye the Arrows which lie on the front desk, (that mean. fifth-hour teacher wonât pass 'em out til the end of the hour). The completed Arrows, which come out once every three weeks represent hard work and planning on the part of the staff. The Arrow is to be commended on the excellent papers they have turned out despite the fact that they were handicapped by the absence of their able advisor, Mrs. Zitt, during the last part of the year. The Student Council is an organization which gives students the chance to gain leadership ability and make decisions for the betterment of Southwest. All the school dances are sponsored by the Council. This year they had an all-school formal, the first in Southwest's history. A branch of the Student Council is the ethics committee which is working for more student government. The Student Council does much to make school more interesting and enjoyable. Hi-Y Hi-Y is a service organization for high school boys. During the year, the boys have worked in order to help people less fortunate than they. This year, the Hi-Y sponsored a religious auditorium for Easter. Some of their other projects have included putting on Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners for the poor, selling Christmas trees at the V men's lots, and helping send underprivileged boys to summer camp. Although it is mainly a service organization, the boys also find time for parties and picnics and a Best Girl banquet for their mothers. Their advisors were Mr. Pearson and Mr. Warner. Silver Tri, which is composed of freshmen and sophomore girls works to bring about a better community and a better world by promoting greater understanding among all races and faiths. A membership drive with an Indian theme began the year for the group. Tepees were set up in the gym and the activities of Silver Tri were explained. Under the active leadership of Jean Renslow, the group took part in several pot-luck suppers, a mother-daughter tea, and heard many interesting speakers, including Shorty Cochran. Silver Tri also took an active part in the International Fair, taking in more money on their import booth than any other group at the fair. This year Mrs. Haaland, Silver Tri's deserving advisor was voted advisor of the year. The Blue Tri is a service organization for junior and senior girls. The purpose is to learn to work together thereby promoting understanding and better relations between the peoples of the world, regardless of race, color or creed. This year the Blue Tri has given a recognition tea for new members, held bake sales to raise money, had joints with other V organizations, and had various other projects. One of the most interesting meetings held this year, was one at which there was a speaker from the Police Department. The girls also had a style show at Pershing along with Washburn and St. Louis Park. This year's group of 98 girls has been very active and will close out a year of fun with the Senior Farewell and the installation of next year's officers. Council is to help regulate the activities of the Girls' Athletic Association, one of the largest school organizations. The chief duties of this group are to plan sports activities and determine points for awards. Early last fall, girls trying out for this spring's golf team began practice. Most of the girls turned in six score cards averaging in the low seventies. The best record belonged to Mary Langsam, who turned in a total of eleven cards with a score in the low fifties. Because of the large number who wished to try out for the team. Mrs. Boylan, the girls' golf coach, required eight golf lessons to be taken during the winter months. Despite the stiff entry requirements, fifty girls tried out for the team. Those who had practiced most consistently and had the best averages were selected. The team, under the enthusiastic direction of Mrs. Boylan. has shown both interest and ability. They should do well in the coming season. The swimming team, another branch of G.A.A. ended a very successful season by finishing third in the all-city meet. Finalists in the meet were Barbara Bowers, Judy Hale. The choir's spirits were really at a low ebb when it was learned that the Cleveland trip would have to be cancelled. Thanks to the enthusiasm and planning of Mr. O. B. Everyone agreed that the band was not only big-ger, but better than ever before. The band played at all of the home football games, as well as at many school auditoriums. The band also helped sponsor the annual carnival. The money from the carnival went to ward new band uniforms. The sweet strains which echo from within the music room three times a week are those of the orchestra. The orchestra practiced classical string music, and this year several members played in an all-city orchestra at Central High School, as well as playing at the class play. One of the main purposes of this organization is to promote appreciation of good music. ORCHESTRAâAt piano: Tom Chepokas. Row |; Mark Ptashne, Idclle Bruer, Rojalind Stcffy. Ethics Committee The Ethics Committee is a branch of Student Council. This committee, headed by Alan Schmucker helps to make student government work in our school. It is their duty to see that the lunchroom can operate with a minimum of faculty supervision. These people are laying the groundwork for more student government at Southwest. In order to do this they unselfishly donate their time and energies. SALES CLUB: Bob Monthey. president; Kathy Divine, secretary. Cheerleaders The smiling and vivacious faces of the cheerleaders do much to pep up the spirits of the students at even the saddest game. Southwest students, who find it easy to cheer a winning team but hard to cheer a losing one. should profit by the example set by these girls, who are peppy and bouncy on every occasion. Gimme Although Southwest's basketball record doesn't look good, the boys played hard and well. In the first game of the season, they narrowly were defeated by West with the score of 56 to 46. The next game found the hard-fighting hoop-sters being edged by Central by the score of 38 to 35. Southwest lost its third game to North by the score of 60 to 31. The next game found the Indians giving a hard time to a powerful Washburn team, although losing 57 to 42. Southwest dropped the next four games, losing to South 70 to 51, Henry 57 to 37. Marshall 51 to 32. and Roosevelt 44 to 25. The next game found the scrappy bucketball men going into overtime before being de- Gooâ bye! Swish! Basketball tested by Vocational. 39 to 41. In the last game of the season played at Williams arena. Southwest was downed by Edison by the score of 63 to 38. The future of the basketball team looks promising. It was a young team this year, and only two lettermen are graduating. Mr. Jay Skoglund. in his first year as head basketball coach at Southwest has done much in the way of building a strong team for next year. Among the juniors that will be back next year are Chuck Colby, Dave Meyers, and Cal Wise. These and other promising juniors and sophomores will strengthen a potentially good team. Mr. Skoglundâs capable coaching and the teamâs spirit and enthusiasm should create a combination which will enable next year's team to more than hold their own city league competition. Cool Cal Get off my back! | ay, help! Graceful Green Junior Birdmen Oh, no, you don't! Merv drives in Hockey Southwest did it again, only more so! As usual, the critics and sports writers said Southwest was a dark horse and would be lucky if they placed among the top four. As usual. Southwest upset predictions. Although the squad was small in number, it was big in spirit, enthusiasm and ability. At the end of the first four games. Southwest averaged eight points per game offensively compared to .25 points per game defensively. In the first game of the season, Southwest trampled Henry 8 to 0. They kept up their high-scoring streak by creaming Central 12 to 0. In the next game, they ran into a little opposition from Washburn but downed them 4 to I. They then ran over Edison 9 to 0 and Vocational 9 to I. Running up against a scrappy Marshall team. Southwest won 3 to I, with all three of the goals being scored by Merv Meredith. In the next game, Southwest beat Roosevelt 5 to 3. In the eighth game of the season. Southwest was given a scare by West who scored two goals in two minutes. Southwest recovered and went on to win 5 to 2. They then met and beat North 4 to 2. In the last game of the regular season, Southwest was defeated by city champion South 3 to 0. Southwest finished second place in the city. Noble turns them beck Warne scores What happened! Fake out Hockey Southwest bounced back from the defeat to beat Washburn 4 to I and Roosevelt 4 to I in the Region I playoffs. Southwest then carried their winning ways over to St. Paul where they beat Harding, St. Paul's second team by the score of 3 to 2 in a sudden death overtime. It was the first time a Minneapolis team had won the Region I since 1950. An under-rated Southwest team, supposedly coming in the back door of the state tournament' met the perennial favorite Eveleth in the first round. Southwest surprised everyone by decisively beating them 4 to I. In the second round, Southwest met South St. Paul and gained the finals by winning 3 to I. In the state championship game. Southwest was scored upon three times in the first period. Southwest then outplayed St. Paul Johnson for the next two periods, but was unable to come from behind and lost 3 to I. Our team ended up as second in the state, the highest a Minneapolis team has ever gone. Roger Rovick was selected for the All-State Hockey team. Among the standouts this year were Don Armstrong. Morgan Clarity, and Ray Lessard, next year's cross-country captain. The view for next year looks favorable as there will be many good boys such as Cal Wise, Tony Turrittin and Wayne Sullwold returning. The boys practice as often as possible, usually three to five times a week. They play two matches a week. The team is composed of eight seniors and one freshman. Senior Council is that hard-working group that meets before advisory several mornings a week to help govern the Senior class before elections. The council handles such business as selecting candidates for class officers, and planning many of the very successful class parties such as the indoor picnic and the hayride. The council, under the leadership of Buzzie Levine, did much to bring the class together. The worried looking individuals seen scurrying around the halls early in the morning and long after school has dismissed are the Senior committee heads. The committees which arc operating in high gear in the Spring before graduation give each senior a chance to take part in the activities of the class. COMMITTEE HEADSâRow I: Dmon Bond. Greg's speech class . . . Mr. Kelsonâs southern accent and Enthuuusiasm . . . taking news and hoping to get on the Arrow or Annual (snicker) . . . going to Calhoun in the spring and ending up at Pulver's . . . Charles Wohlford's sense of humor (sometimes a bit grim for those who didn't have their work in on time) . . . the college aptitude tests . . . two home rooms starting the year in senior advisory . . . reading Chaucer for Willy and Mrs. B. . . . starting the year off right with those wonderful senior parties (that all seemed to end with that old favorite spin the bottle ') . . . our talented exchange student from New Zealand, Cathy Styles, winning the Voice of Democracy Contest . . . the cross country team being led to the state championship by captains Clarity and Armstrong . . . watching Buzzie Rock Around the Clock . . . pouring acid in Chemistry with a shaky hand, completely missing the test tube . . . struggling through typing and shorthand under the benign smile of Miss Severena Holmberg . . . the chemistry sub that ate first lunch . . . And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone.
