t clOaaUtanian PUBLISHED BY THE ANNUAL STAFF OF SOUTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS. MINN. DEDICATION MHC ' 3'!V n W)U,2-1 52. Jvfr. With extreme pride we dedicate this 1952 Wagistanian to our two twin city championship teams — Football and Hockey. -x The Theme—Movies A school year is as much of a production as a movie is. In fact, there is a definite parallel between the two. For this reason we have chosen movies for the theme of our annual. Our school year is produced and directed by our teachers, and we are the leading characters. With this in mind, look at the record of the 1951-52 school year. Table of Contents I. The farthest point in the world is now only 36 hours away, and the jet plane is fast reducing that time. We can circle the globe in less time than it took twenty years ago to go from coast to coast. Think what this can mean in terms of international good will and understanding! We are standing on the threshold of a new era in which we must completely change our conception of direction, time, and space. The air age has provided us with new foundations on which to build a more friendly, a more prosperous, a finer world in which to live. The challenge, the adventure, the opportunity is yours! Best wishes to you all. m R. H. CLASSON Name: Al Halley Position: Assistant to Principal. Advanced Math Activities: Track Coach. Football The Indians retired from the warpath with a sreat many scalps this year. They carried off both the City and Twin-City Crowns to complete their most successful season. Coach Sullivan was awarded the Minneapolis Coach of the Year Award, which was given to the coach who did the best with his materia'. Also honored were Co-Captain Paul Eddy, who was voted Most valuable player in the city ; and Dave Mills, Best lineman in the city. These are but a few of the boys deserving honors, for as one spectator said. They were all great. I only wish the whole team could be chosen All City. Coach and Co Captains: Jerry McCombs, Mr. Sullivan, Paul Eddy. MOD Twin City Championship Game The TOUCHDOWN TWINS. Paul Eddy and Bob Meredith, with fine blocking from Don Dennison and great signal calling of Tom Kassmir. made an impression never to be forgotten in the great Twin City Championship Game against St. Paul Murray. The line improved steadily all season long and finished the year with a spirit and doggedness not matched in the city. Even West, with their oversized line, found an equal in the Indians' front wall. These boys made possible the long distance ramblings of the extraordinary backfield. This year we had a pair of the finest ends in the city in Dave Mills and Tom Kent. They were chosen first and second All City ends, respectively. The tackles improved steadily, with Carl Bredt and Clark Ewald being the mainstays. John Hamilton, aided ably by Carl Moore, held down the center spot. Co-Captain Jerry McCombs made his presence felt in the center of the line. John Donnelly. Denny Sullivan. Dick Bruns, and Jim Fallow played fine games at guard. Although many of the boys will graduate, there will be a strong nucleus returning, and prospects look very good for next year. E41J Hike! Dave Bowers, and Greg Heimarck combined for the points in the state meet. A third in the opening Y.M.C.A. Invitational and another in the closing left no doubt about the Indians talent. The promising outlook of next year's core consists of Co-Captains Dave Bowers and Tom Green plus Malcolm Nicholson and Van Johnson in the way of swimmers. Both divers, Jim Mack and Don Ottenweller. have great possibilities as they are improved and this year pulled the team through several tight spots. Seniors, John Buys. Dave Chatterton, and Co-Captains Mark Wells, and Greg Heimarck were consistent winners and Jack Steele was the individual star, averaging almost two firsts a meet. This year's team was very hard working with high spirits. Just a little more depth or a few breaks would have seen the cleanest boys in school' nearer the top. Basketball This year's rather short squad raided their Hooper rating in the city standings to eighth place by winning two of their last three games. Although the Indians didn't find themselves until late in the year, their spirit was always good, and as shown by their late season comeback they never gave up. Dave Mills, our smoothly finished forward, was named to the weekly All City team twice and John Christgau. at guard, once. The rest of the team was good whether winning or losing. John Hamilton and John Reichart completed the Indians five-some most of the time and both were consistent in their fine team play. The team, although not finishing high in the conference, did work and try even though they had little support from the student body. We give the boys a lot of credit and hope that the returning lettermen will make a good comeback next year. Man In the Crease Howie Holds Hockey This year's blademen were very sharp as they cut down all city opponents to sweep to the City and Twin-City Championships. No one save the Indians too much of a scare in the city race and most of the games were “on ice before the first period was over. St. Paul Johnson offered the competition in the game between the twins, but the “picksters ' got on the stick and outplayed and outscored Johnson for the second time—winning 2 to I. The way to the State Crown also led through Johnson and for the third time they tumbled to our speeding sextet. Hib-bing, the State Champ this year, took Southwest for their only defeat of the year. Hibbing could not score until the third period when they made three goals. Casual Cammack GROUP: Row I: Don Berg, Pete Passolt, Howie Cammacl Denny Sullivan, Jim Blanchard. Hockey Jim Blanchard tallied once to make the final count 3 to I. The valiant efforts of Howie Cammack in the nets were the prime factor in the closely contested game. Southwest's icemen then came through with a third period surge to defeat St. Paul Humboldt for a third in the state. Don Berg, playing both wing and defensemen, was placed on the All State Team. Jim Blanchard. Bob Meredith, and Pete Passolt made the All City first string. Without honors, but fine players are: Denny Sullivan, our fine goalie who came in to save the final game against Humboldt; Mel Young, a consistent player at first line center: Clark Ewald. a rugged blue ribbon defenseman; and Bob Lockrem. who did much as center in the second line. Tiger House Secret panels, a mystifying portrait, screams, and touches of Spellbound were presented by the Senior Class in the form of the mystery Tiger House. The play, directed by Harold Gregory, was appealing to young and old alike. It is the story of Erma Lowrie. who inherits her aunt's house, which is supposedly haunted by a tiger. With a succession of relatives and friends running in and out of the house, and tiger claws coming out of bookcases and the fireplace, Erma finds the secret panel and the real cause of the strange happenings. This romantic mystery drama was presented on December 6 and 7 to a sell-out audience, which received it with wild shrieks and gales of laughter.
