Southwest High basketball was responsible for the school's first victory on the varsity level in a major sport. The Raiders captured the honor with an overtime 49-47 thriller over La Jolla Country Day. Southwest students enjoyed a season of exciting basketball while they watched their team improve steadily. Gustavo Puffelis, a 5' 11 sophomore, scored 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds against Bonita Vista- helping to lead the way to a double-overtime victory. 5'10 John DeJesus, a sophomore, hit for 22 points in a two point victory over Sweetwater and 15 in the big win over the Barons. Another bright spot for Southwest is Chris Hamill, a 5'7 Junior. Hamill's superior ball handling and defensive abilities were evident in all Raider games. Ruben Valadez, a 5'8 Junior added stability and .1 l aggressive ballhandling to the Raider causep he also served . as the Raider Captain on most occasions. Elias Jackson is probably the most gifted offensive player on the Raider squad, he possesses a fine jump shot and is a skilled passer and driver. Elias was Southwest's major outside shooting threat this season. Bolstering theteam with depth was part-time starter Greg Pfeiffer. Greg was the most improved player on the team by far. This was due to an excellent attitude and dedication. Rounding out the squad were Bryan Greene, Rick Cancino and Art Moe Molina. 1. Ruben Valadez looking for an open- ing. 2.
