J, V, iii' :J l 1-I Q l 'u Southwest Takes Form Our first year, a time of trials and tribu- lations where we groped and searched through the darknessp to find the light, to keep on keepin' on. An acorn At first we were a separate people, from lVlar Vista Junior, Montgomery Junior, Southwest Junior, lVlar Vista High, and Montgomery High. As time wore on though, we forgot where we came from, and worried about where we were going. Together. . . Pulling foreach other and Southwest. 1. The building of a place for many victories to come. 2. The beginning of things is a. mere image, the comple- tion a true fact. 3. When things are finally done, the feeling of accomplishment is beautiful. 4. The finishing touches and then the beginnings of a new togetherness. I ar, r I ,-- --tl N ,5.,.- . Learning Begins lVlany of the students regretted coming to Southwest because they thought nothing would be ready and completely organized. Through time and perseverance So, the students started making use of what they did have. .. Our library started with only a few books to offer, but soon grew. ln the classrooms, we adjusted to the newness and to one another, and began the usual learning process in an atmosphere of gradually increasing unity . 1. Through the open door and down the silent hallway Jeff Fleck finds a place of peace. 2. In this place of teachings, thought is a necessity. Pictured Are Luz Baez, Augustine Larraga, Vickie Stuart, Jonie Talley, Larita Grimes, Kathleen Nlorrison, and Wayne Pratt. 3. Our once empty library shelves filled steadily with the knowledge of ages. 4. lVlrs. Balestrieri helps a student find the right answer. I 'im' Q., fr Teachers add Spirit With the newness of the school came new and innovating teachers, uninhibited and spirited. People on campus all agree that Southwest has the best teachers around, teachers who not only teach academics, but who also teach us to grow. . . It emerges a mighty oak We are recognized and treated as individuals, encouraged to walk our own paths, and to experience our high school lives. We have infinity before us and our time is fleeting. . .We too are just beginning. . 1. Teachers show how the faculty feels about spirit on Halloween 2. Nlarylou Nlarin, Anita Ramiriz, Luz Baez and Angela Valasco have a feeling of happiness within themselves. 3. Nlr, Gonzales has a moment of solitude as he's holding up the mighty oak tree. 4. Raider Pride Emerges Each individual had something to offer and it was combined to make Southwest and to bring forth Raider Pride. So it was with Southwest, but we grow on our courage, spirit, ability and potential. ln the biology lab, new horizons were researched and others had fun producing something meaningful. Teachers get involved and help us grow and reach out-- just like our newly planted shrubbery. 1. Along the corridors of Southwest new births are always occurring. 2. Rod Dacio, Mike Hernandez, Ernie Odviar and Bryan Greene diligently disect a fetal pig in Mrs. Stone's Biology Class. 3. Kathleen Morrison, Glenn Del Carmen and Sally Andres are spending time together to prepare a good annual. 4. Ms. Syverson exhibits her ability to enjoy a sport at the faculty-student volleyball game. l , X - , i . it Raider pride and spirit outshown all others. We didn't care that our season wasn't a winning one, because we had the courage to confront and challenge those who dared. Athletic courage-- where no one submits to defeat, Fighting spirit-- when all seems hopeless. When we lost, we came back again and agai reaching down deeper within ourselves to find the essence of victory and to transform it to reality. V11 We have learned to disregard the past, and to concentrate on the future. l l. The Cheerleaders carried spirit through every season. i .L P - ' F ,t.g.,.-why e , Q . . . - .. -, . Until Nov. 1 , there was not even the certainty that there would be a yearbook, but enough Raiders did buy books and production began. The staff consisted of 15 inexperi- enced, but eager and industrious students . Their goal was to publish a professional first edition of the Southwest High School yearbook, and they have accomplished that. I have never worked with a more capable, dedicated group. They have earned my respect--and praise--for an outstanding job. The past season started late for this young team of all sophomores and juniors, they lacked the experience and training that the other school teams had. Although the varsity win-loss record was 2-14 having lost a third win by a protest decision, the young team showed spirit and desire by almost de- feating the CIF champions during the last game of the season by a score of 15-13, 6-15, 15-13. 5 ,ig --17 n ..,. , ,, ,---rg .W ff A , ., CJ . Z. XTTYJ ' 1 Southwest High basketball was responsible for the school's first victory on the varsity level in a major sport. The Raiders captured the honor with an overtime 49-47 thriller over La Jolla Country Day. Southwest students enjoyed a season of exciting basketball while they watched their team improve steadily. Gustavo Puffelis, a 5' 11 sophomore, scored 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds against Bonita Vista- helping to lead the way to a double-overtime victory. 5'10 John DeJesus, a sophomore, hit for 22 points in a two point victory over Sweetwater and 15 in the big win over the Barons. Another bright spot for Southwest is Chris Hamill, a 5'7 Junior. Hamill's superior ball handling and defensive abilities were evident in all Raider games. Ruben Valadez, a 5'8 Junior added stability and .1 l aggressive ballhandling to the Raider causep he also served . as the Raider Captain on most occasions. Elias Jackson is probably the most gifted offensive player on the Raider squad, he possesses a fine jump shot and is a skilled passer and driver. Elias was Southwest's major outside shooting threat this season. Bolstering theteam with depth was part-time starter Greg Pfeiffer. Greg was the most improved player on the team by far. This was due to an excellent attitude and dedication. Rounding out the squad were Bryan Greene, Rick Cancino and Art Moe Molina. 1. Ruben Valadez looking for an open- ing. 2. With a diverse student body, drawn from two junior highs and two existing senior highs, Southwest was quickly labelled as one that would be impossible to unify. Yet, somehow, magically maybe, we have been able to get it all together and we have begun to spread the Raider name and tradition throughout the area. Many people said it wouldn't happen . Associated Student Body Activities also followed the pat- tern of being slow starters but strong finishers . Handicapped by having sometimes overly severe critics and too little money, your A .S .B. began to take its first steps at meetings held last summer. From those meager beginnings have evolved a fairly strong student activities program--from assemblies to athletics to journalism to drama to music-- the co-curricular offerings of this school reflect the hard work and dedication of many talented students and faculty . lVIany people said it wouldn't happen. lt is the hope of the A,S ,B , officers and commissioners that Southwest High School, the impossible school , will always be the school whose students continue To dream the impossible dream . . .
