These bouncy neophytes popped into the picture resdy, willing, and able to take on the new life of high-school students. They confidently took on regular high-school class responsibilities, including their executive board, sponsored by Coach Richard Samuels. Cherise Harvey serves as this group's president followed by: La Kesha Weathers, vice president; Andrea Hooks, secretary; Veronica Harris, treasurer; and Razson White, sgt.-at-arms. The freshmen worked hard this year, their efforts producing a prize-winning float for the Homecoming Parade. The class of 1991 began anew in an exciting, different environ- ment full of new faces, new experiences and many new ideas. Not quite so used to the grueling, tortuous life which accompanies the typical high-school student, these students adapted well to the change in scenery and have come a long way this year. They've grown consis- tently since their first fretful day of school in September. The rest of their high-school years are yet to come, but soon they will be the senior class of 1991 and will be looking back at the freshmen of 1994. 16 Adams, G. The ever popular Junior Slave Day proved to be an enjoyable, as well as profitable, experi- ence. A new fundraiser was also tried this year: Heart to Heart Computer Match-Ups. According to personal questionnaires, SW students were given their ten best matches. These juniors, in the process of following in the footsteps of Indians who have left their marks on SW in the past, are ready to take on the role of leadership as seniors next year, their heads held high with PRIDE. For all entering freshman, the 4 years ahead lie like a long, endless stretch of highway taken on in a 40 year old car. As seniors, we see how little time we really had—and realiz- ing that one doesn't have all the time in the world is one of the first sieps into adulthood. During toe ''irst year, we overcame olty fears regarding finding classes in THE BIG HIGH SCHOOL, being beat '0 by upperclassmen and getting caught sucking our thumbs. These fears 32 were replaced by bigger, more David Wilson profound problems, only inten- sifying during our senior year. As we venture out into that intriguing real world we will all encounter success and failure, times of struggle, times of prosperity—some will realize their potential, and some already have. Whatever happens, we all share the memories of our years to- gether—the common bonds of struggling for acceptance, and struggling to find our individu- ality and direction. Here have been cold nights, sharing cocoa and blankets in the bleachers of the football stadiums, warm days learning to (fly) drive, talking for hours on end, cramming for tests together, and discovering friends in the most unexpected places. The organizations we have joined or been initiated into have formed lasting unity, where friends will be friends 3 years from now. Along with the laughter, there were always tears—of despair, of pain, of adolescence—but always friends to help us pull through. If there are tears in parting, there is always joy in anticipa- tion. The slightest utterance of these words should strike a chord of pure joy in any real, red-blooded SW senior's heart. If those words have no effect on your senior soul, you must be, in '88 trip jargon, weak, thank-you! (snap!) Senior Ski Trip provides an annual, welcome escape from the sheer hell that the last year of the SW experi- ence can be. After all, nearly 4 years in high school should be enough to make anyone ready to take ridiculous risks with their lives by flying down treacherous mountain sides at high speeds. It is destined to be a glorious date in the annals of history: Wednesday, January 21, 1988. The '88 midwinter exodus began that day in an inglorious manner, with the seniors meeting our exalted leaders Coach Hannaman and Aggie «L 11:30 for a late night early morning wait at Kansas City's downtown Amtrak station. Melia was there too. Amtrak relieved the pain of our vigil with neat little paper train engineer hats, which provided hours of entertainment for sleep-deprived students. We finally departed shortly after midnight, heading west in our very own car (none of the other passengers seemed to want our company.) Our destination was Taos, New Mexico, home of laos Ski Valley, nestled in the scenic Sangre de Cristo mountains. We took a bus from the Raton, N.M. Amtrak station and arrived in Taos sometime Thurdsay afternoon. We quickly set up at the Sagebrush Inn in graciously provided condos (several students had to stay in the hotel a short distance from the condos, along with Coach and Chaperone Aggie.) We then got our skis and boots, instantly becoming experts. The fun had begun. The next day, Friday the 22nd, marked the first day of actual skiing. It was a trip. We rose at 7:00 and headed for the Senior Ski Trip slopes at 8:00. Only 2 seniors had any experience on skis, so we all took lessons, provided by laos' reputable ski school. By the day's end many of us had taken the easy trails from the nountain top, with our instruc- tors' help. Several students found only frustration on the slopes, however, and decided that skiing was not for them. These softies spent the remain- der of the trip touring and shop-hopping in Taos and nearby Santa fe. They claimed to have had fun. The rest of us spent the next 4 days banging bumps and hanging in the lodge. In the 4 days on the mountain, all who tried improved, to varying degrees. By the end, all had progressed from the green trails (easiest) to the blue (more difficult) trails. Some ski studs were even romping on black (most difficult) trails. Coach Hannaman and Chaperone Aggie were chaperones as ell as friends, always ready to help, whether on the slopes or at the Sagebrush, always ready to give directions to the nearest Mexican restaurant (open or closed), and always ready to ruthlessly lay down the law, crushing the slightest attempts at a good time. The favorite post-skiing activity at the Sagebrush involved the hot tub, where battered bodies and sore muscles found relief. Icy Hot and Kellog's Diving Tony are just 2 other mystical examples of the entertainments developed by those wacky seniors. The full extent of the partying which occured nightly cannot be revealed in a wholesome publica- tions such as this, but it was oh-so-intense, and you should definitely believe anything you hear about the trip, no matter how absurd. There were, of course, romantic developements. The last day of the trip was spent in town. Taos is a vibrant artist colony and is full of galleries and shops. Much was made of a late 50's juke box in one shop, and some seniors found solace in the music of the Beach Boys and the hit Transistor Sister. The bus picked us up in town at 2:30 and we headed for Raton. We had a train to catch. The wait at the desolate Raton was made bearable by Superman, inane children's games, and vocabulary lessons for Herbert Sims and Tammy Thornton. The train came in late, but made up the lost time en route to Kansas City. We arrived in K.C. at 7:00 a.m. on the 27th, much to our collective chagrin. We had returned to our mundane lives in K.C. and at SW, with only our memories, sore muscles and friends to remind us of the success that was: SKI TRIP '88. 50 Senior Summaries ASHBY, Tracy Band, Forensics, Homecoming Queen, Honor-Nine, National Honor Society, Junior Achieve- ment, Math 4 Chess Club, 100 Girls' Club, SBC, Variety Show, Debate, Explorers, Freshman Exec. Due to a surge in early attendance, SW was thrust abrubtly into district class 5A. This meant that SW would be ranked against such powerhouse teams as Rockhurst, Truman and Lee's Summit, causing our ranking to slide downward. The highlight of the season came perhaps at the Interschol- astic League awards ceremony when 3 SW football players were honored. Ihey were: Eric Henuber and Miguel 1 Mabon with first team honors and Steve ford with a second team honor. There were solid victories against Interscholastic League teams which balanced out the dissappointing losses. The season ended quietly with no repeat of the previous year but with high hopes for the next season. Yes, after all the petitions and hard work, SW finally had a boys' soccer team! The team consisted of 18 goal-hungry guys and their dedicated coach, Tim McCray. The season actually began a w ek before school started. This is the kind of dedication that took SW's new team from a shaky start to a stable finish. Even against a majority of schools which had played for several years, 3W proved to be a worthy competitor. At the end of the season, the team had a banquet to gi e out awards and gifts. A new club was established that night called the Booters. This group, which is the parent support group of the team, is run by Mrs. Linda DeFoor, president; Mrs. Karen Cusumano, chairmen of fundraisers; and Mrs. Ro Patterson, secretary. With the continuing support and enthusiasm, next year's team promises to have a great season. 66 Girls ’ Soccer Row Is Suzy Miller, Claudia Singleman, Sarah Still, Naya Naar, and I isa Corson Row 2: Christy Oean, Lindsay Simmons, Denise Beuno, Amy Helmkamp, ar-J Melia Ellis Row 3s Jamie Hopkins, Christy Watson, Beth DeFoor, Elaine Roesbery, ’'arm Williams, by Melia Ellis This season marks the Indians' 3rd season at SW. Seventeen girls made up the Indian tribe when it started on March 1, 1988. There were 5 freshmen, A sophomores, 5 juniors, and 3 seniors. Condition- ing for the team started on February 29th. The team was a bit shaken by the resignation of coach Tim McCray, but started strong again under Mrs. Helmkamp, a teacher at Northeast whose daughter Amy plays on the team. This year, plans are being made to include the girls' soccer team under the parent support group, the Booters. Although the season, ending May 10th, wasn't a huge success, the girls had a lot of fun and look forward to a strong returning team next year. 67 Volleyball Row Is Tisha Warden, Chtistone Jones, and Stacey Stewart Row 2: Ayanna Burt, Chrislanda Atkins, Lisa Tate, Jamie Hopkins, and Hilarie Walker by Jamie Hopkins This year's SW volleyball team prgved to be a very promising one. Although the team started out slow, they steadily improved throughout the season. Many girls on the team were new to volleyball but regard- less of this, the team played well. The team finished the season with an overall record of 9-10 and a record in the league of 5-3. The returning members of the team were Hilary Walker, Lisa Tate, and Stacey Stewart. The team will return next year with the exception of seniors, Hilary Walker and Marchae Leonard. Lisa Tate's strong spiking ability and Stacey Stewert's setting ability will both be back next year. As well as returning Varsity players, there are also some members of this years Junior Varsity team that could contribute to the team next year. If this group of Indians can start off the next season where they left off, the future could be promising. 68 Cross Country Row Is Darrel Green and Mike Connaghan Row 2s Terry Vincent and Leroy Ewell Row 3s John Patterson, Doug Ingerly, and Craig Booker by Mike Connaghan In the last several years, the SW Cross Country teams have had a large share of success. This has included winning Interscho- lastic League Championship meets during every odd year from 1979-8' rnd 2 appearances at the state meet, finishing 6th in '85 and 10th in '86. A number of individuals also made appearan- ces at state meets. This year marked a return to normalcy for the team after the last 2 banner years. Already hurt by the loss of 2 members of last year's powerful team to graduation and 2 to transfers to other schools, the '87 teams were plagued oy small numbers and inexperience. There were rarely enough runners to complete JV, freshmen, and nirls' teams. The responsibil- ity of leading the boys' team fell on the shoulders of seniors Darrell Green and Mike Connag- han, both accomplished runners in their 4th year of Cross Country. Juniors, John Patter- son, Doug Ingerly, and Craig Booker, sophomore, Terry Vincent and other dedicated young men worked hard to round out the 7-man squad. As the season progressed, the team established a respectable place among its competitors. At the League Championship Meet the boys' varsity squad came in n solid 2nd, well in between both the 1st place Northeast tearn and the 3rd place Paseo team. The 2nd place finish ended tho string of odd-year wine t 6. SW had been alternating the championship with Northeast since N£.'s win in 197r;. Continued on page 70 69 Cross Country The team's 8th place at District on October 24 was short of the 5th place required to advance to Sectionals, the next step on the way to State. In spite of the unspectacular team showing, some individuals had outstanding performances. There were 3 Indians among the top 10 in the League Champion- ship meet, landing spots on the All-Star team: Green, who placed 2nd, Connaghan, 3rd, and Booker, 10th. Green and Connaghan continued to perform well into the post-season as they progressed to the state meet where they placed 4th and 33rd, respectively. Green's exceptional finish surpassed both his 12th place as a sophomore and 25th as a junior. As one of the top 15, he again became a part of the All-State team, repeating his sophomore year accomplishment. Among the girls, freshman Cherise Harvey displayed promising potential by winning the Interscholastic League Championship and quali- fying for state. Basketball Row Is Jason Irving and Steve Ford Row 2: Coach Madison, Johnny Davis, Jeff Newman, Richard Smith, Antawyn Ramzy, and Adrian Andrews Swish, 2 points; Swish, 2 points; Swish, a free throw, lhe SW Indian Varsity Basketball Team didn't hear that sound often enough this year. All in all it was a frustrating year for our basketball team. As always, the Indians began their season with all the spirit and confidence of the world, and this remained throughout the season. The team this year was relatively small, and many members will not be returning next year, leaving a young team to take over in B8-89. Unfor- tunately, the team did not have the kind of season they had hoped for. They played .500 ball throughout the season. Practice was difficult with snow days at inappropriate times. A lack of activity buses due to snow kept the team from many of their practices. Despite this, Indian fans continued to support their team loyally, in the hopes of ending the season on an upbeat note. However, the season ended against Hickman Mills when HM lofted a 22 foot 3 pointer with 2 seconds left. The final score was 66-63—a real disappointment. Coach Madison expressed that what we really lacked was height, and that we played as well as could be expected without this height. There is always hope, though, and with a little of that famed 5W spirit, 88-89 should prove to be a great year! Although some expectations were not realized, the season was more often than not characterized by good performances and success. After a very large turnout, the teams experienced a formid- able rate of attrition. Remaining was one of the most talented groups of track and field athletes SW has had. The sprinting events, which Head Coach Samuels said were the strongest he has seen at SW, were the core of this year's team. The teams displayed their talent throughout the season, improving as the year progres- sed. They came in 2nd in the League Championships. Gaps in some events were enough to allow SW to surpass the defending League Champions. 6 boys' and 5 girls' events performed well enough st Districts to advance to Section- als. The wind was blowing hard that day, as it often does this time of year at Lee's Summit. The SW team had a disproportion- ately large number of injuries, and lost some of their best runners. One was senior Chris Brown. His outstanding ability in the 400m dash was not to be seen at state. An injured foot coupled with e i ?te assignment in the 4x3200m relay hampered his chances. 3ut at least that event joined others to compete at state. The best placed result came f cm Roger Franks in the shot put. He lofted the weight 32' 3 to earn the 4th best distance of the day. They eventually wound up with a tie for 10th place at State. Most of the points were garnered by senior Alicia Bowie and freshman Cherise Harvey. Bowie ended her distinguished high school track career with 4th place finishes in both the 300m hurdles and 110m hurdles. Harvey, after narrowly missing victories in these events in Districts and Sectionals, came in 3rd in the 400m and 4th in the 200m. They began the year with the annual Fall Concert on October 27. The audience appeared pleased by all performances, including those by Belles and Beaux, Concert Choir, and the Stage Band. George Klepac received a 1 rating, qualifying him to represent SW in our district The annual Winter Holiday Concert in December featured violin soloists Kevin Greer and George Klepac, and cellist John Patterson. 1988 began with the Winter Concert, a combined effort with Varsity Band, Concert Band, and Stage Band. Although the purpose of the orchestra is to entertain, SW's String Orchestra used its abilities to introduce listening skills to handicapped and young children. On March 15, the string orchestra traveled to the Ararat Shrine Temple where they played various assortments of music which were identifiable to the children, such as the ever popular nursery rhymes. This year, in the state compiti- tion at Warrensburg, Orchestra received an honor rating of 2. A violin duet by Henry Troyer and George Klepac, and a bass solo by Vivian Grover, received I's on both the district and state levels. The SW orchestra rounded off the year with its final performance on May 10, featuring a finale of all vocal and instrumental groups. The concert concluded a year of a few disappointments and many hard earned triumphs. During football season, the Marching Tribesmen entertained fans with their precision drills and spirited playing in the stands. The Tribesmen also marched in two parades—Veteran's Day, where they were the cerimonial band, perform- ing the national anthem and Taps, and the American Royal. After football season, they were trans- formed into a classical concert band. They performed in several school concerts along with the orchestra and choirs. The Winter and Holiday Concerts featured a potpourri of tradional and holiday songs. This year, District Contest was held at CMSU, the result of new districts. The band walked away with an honor rating of 2. In addition, several students performed solo or ensemble selections, receiving high scores ai; well. Those with the top score of 1 moved on to the State Contest • Columbia, where every instru- mental again received a score of 1. I hanks to hard work and dedica- tion, this year's marching and concert seasons were a great sucess, and once again, the band has proved to be a fair representa- tion of the ability and spirit of Southwest. The group now assembling, the pride and joy of the music department, is the SW Stage 3and. Where else but in SW's room 226 cvn you find people willing to get up before the sun to practice a mix of big band jazz, blues, and rock? These dedicated (crazy?) musicians auditioned in Septem- ber for this group, which ideally consists of 5 saxo- phones, 5 trumpets, b trombones, I guitar, 1 bass, 1 piano, 1 drum, and the players to go along with them. The Stage Band had a busy performance schedule, playing for school concerts and assemblies, for the AFS Harvest Party, for the Boosters' Ethnic Dinner, at the City Hall, at the Plaza Mariott for an H R Block luncheon, at the Golden Ox, and at the GSA Building of the Bendix complex. The 12 member group, under the direction of Mr. Jack Bettes St Beaux Foster, began practicing early in the year at 7:00 every morning. In addition to singing •medleys from such Broadway musicals as A Chorus Line and Marne, students learned dance steps to go with the music. When the Christmas season rolled around, Belles and Beaux worked on Christmas carols and performed at churches, syna- gogues, and hospitals, in addition to singing at the Winter Concert. After returning from Winter Vacation, Belles and Beaux began work on songs for the Spring Concert and the' 5W Variety Show. Belles and Beaux hope to return next year, and since the group consisted mostly of juniors this year, many of them will be around to keep the Belles and Beaux tradition alive at 5W. Wonder why? First of all, you have to know what AFS is. You might consider AFS the biggest and best student exchange program that has ever existed. During its AO years of life, it has converted the lives of many, many young people like you and me. In the 199u program alone the c are more than 7000 exchange students all over the world, and SW enjoyed having A of these special young people. Maybe you have seen them around the school or heard them talking with their foreign accents. Yes, that's us: Edwin, Uwe, Naya and Denise, the A AFS students this year. We think that we were so lucky for being here at SW this last year. It was really the best, most important, interesting, and enjoyable year we ever had. Not only because we each got a new family and home, lots of new friends and experiences; and not only because of having so much fun and just being in another country, but also because of the fact that we learned to look toward life from a different point of view and to see that there is a whole world with a lot of very nice people that all belong together. This year has helped us to realize how valuable our home countries are in some ways which we were not able to see before we came here. We would like to thank our families and the Southwest AFS chapter for all the opportuni- ties they gave us; thanks to the International Club, and all of you, the v hole SW student body, for your help and understanding. You are great and we love you and we wish you the best. It vrs an awesome year. S5 Stage Crew TOP: Barbara Sievenin (Sponsor), Tim Whipple, Kristie Watson, Darrel rannock, Joe Smith, David Moore. FIRST ROW: Laura ■ ■ ISE Trip by Linda Ingerly -i Tired of the same old dull routine, 4 SW students took an early spring break and jotted across the ocean to France for 2 weeks. For these students: Laura Schaeffer, Laura Wilson, Linda Ingerly (that's me!) and David Wilson, this was the result of a year's worth of planning and saving. Touching down in Paris after a 9 hour flight, we soon noticed that something was definitely amiss. Fearfully, we understood the problem—there was no English! Everyone was chattering away in strange sounding gibberish, and to add insult to our delicate young egos, our party of 30 girls (and David) was the object of much curiousity. We were the foreigners now. However, in one easy lesson on the Metro subway system, we had the run of the city and felt almost at home (as long as we didn't have to speak to anyone). Most students would have been satisfied with such mundane activities as Versailles or the Louvre, but we longed for adventure, and the chance to strike out on our own. (David did this on his first day by simply going straight when the rest of the group was turning right!) Stretched to our limits, and faced with unbear- able agony at the prospect of yet another Renaissance painting or cathedral, we headed out to the flea market, where we bargained for our purchases with pitiful looks and whining pleas of no money. Paris was a wonderful city, from the majestic splendor of Norte Dame to the street caf£s and bars (remember, no legal drinking age in Franee!) Our next stop was our most terrifying—a 1 week family stay. We unwillingly tumbled off the bus, past our families' waiting arms in a desperate attempt to escape. Most students, once they relaxed, had a great time (except for the occasional paranoia of having been fed cat) and formed lasting relations with their families. After a tear-jerking goodbye to the family we were so hesitant to meet, we rejoined our group and took off for Strasbourg andl Reims, with a 1 day side trip to Germany. (When did the German students ever get to go to France, hmm?) We settled into a new routine of shopping and partying, sharing the hotel with a group of fellow Americans froir Minnesota, thereby confirming my determination to never visit that particular state. Happily, we discovered the familar sight and smell of the locrl Micky D's (familar, except for the unusual listing of beer under the beverages.) Too soon, the time came for us to return home. We reluctantly said goodbye to our new friends, and flew home to KC. It's hard to describe what this trip meant to all of us, but our theme song (from the too popular Dirty Dancing sound- track) says it all: I Had the Time of mv Life. -Ae i - STUCO Row One: Jennifer Gordon, Herbert Sims, Colleen Burke, Elaine Roesbery, Darrell Green. The officers elected weres Presi- dent, Elaine Roesbery; Vice President, Brendan Danaher; Secretary, Tracy Ashby; Treasur- er, Chris Goldman; Sgt.-at-Arms, Darrel Green. The primary objective of the NHS executive committee is to revise the induction process to their specifications for the selection of new members. This is done on the basis of the main precepts of the NHS which are, leadership, character, scholar- ship, and service. The first requirement for new members is the grade requirement of 3.0. They must meet other standards of service, leadership, and character. The induction ceremony for new NHS members this year was originally set for Wednesday, February 10. Due to bad weather, however, the ceremony was postponed. The ceremony took place on Monday, March the seventh at 6:00 p.m. The ceremony was repeated on March ninth for the entire student body. The membership was increased to 67, 32 seniors and 35 juniors. 89 PuSfications Staff by David Perry Straight from the awesome informat ion entertainment machine that is the Southwest High publicat ions journal ism class (officially a mere creative writing course) comes this story of a courageous and incredibly precocious band of SW juniors and seniors. These students spent an hour of every grueling school day and uncount- able hours after school plan- ning, writing and reporting for, distributing and raising money for that dynamic duo of SW news and entertainment: the TRAIL and SACHFM. You are probably now asking yourself, why? Why do they do it? The answer: they do it all for you! They care! The evidence of this group's valuable contributions to SW and our community was witnessed nearly twice a month this past school year by those fortunate enough to have bought issues of TRAIL, and the staff's further sacrifices are being witnessed right now, by you, as your lucky eyes joyfully peruse the pages of the 87-88 SACHEM. You are the lucky benefactor of uncount- ed hours of unselfish toil on the part of the SW creative class! Consider yourself very lucky. Please excuse that uncalled for outburst of inane creative writing. the real story follows... Staff members of both the newspaper and yearbook reported, layed out, edited, and raised funds for not only a grade, but to share their talent and information with the student body and staff. IRAIL reporters and photographers covered events that visibly affected SW, including district, city and national developments. Informa- tion was not the only thing to be found in the pages of IRAIL and SACHEM; creative expression was encouraged by the TRAIL'S Off the Beaten Path section, which provided space for student contributions of creative writing and art. The year's success was measured not only in terms of quality, but in terms quantity as well. For the first time in many years, the IRAIL came out twice a month (the 66-87 staff produced only 9 all year, by contrast). Mrs. Lyons was extremely pleased with this achievment, and Steven Thomas, the paper's editor, echoed her satisfaction, but felt that the quality could have been better and that the work was unevenly distributed, due to those who only worked when forced to. Darrel Brannock, SACHEM editor, felt a little less satisfied with the yearbook. He had hoped to get it out before the end of the school year. We nil hope that this year's IRAIL md SACHEM lived up to the past and will provide inspira- tion for the future. 91 JROTC BAHALION STAFF L to Rs Darrell Green, Rodney Lovett, Marchai Leonard, Floyd Lewis, and Herbert Sims. by Mark Webb JROTC members have been very busy this year. They showed their school spirit by acting as the color guard at several Indian home games, as well as marching in numerous parades such as Homecoming, Veterans' Day, and the St. Patrick's Day Parade at Brookside. They visited two military bases this year. On November 9, they went to Wentworth Military Academy, and on December 1, they visited Whiteman's Air Force Base. This year's JROTC had many outstanding cadets. Among these was Cadet Lt. Colonel Darell Green. Green was not only Warrior Batallion's Commander in Chief, but he was also second in command over all of the cadets in Kansas City. At the end of the year, Green was awarded not only the Chiefs Scholarship, but a three year Army ROTC Scholar- ship to the college of his choice, anywhere in the U.S. Last but not least, there is the dedicated rifle team. Every morning this team showed up at 6:30, (yes that's AM folks!) to pratices with Sgt. Brouilette. The hard work, and loss of sleep, paid off when they took second place in the citywide championship. JROTC has been a part of SW for over sixty years, and has a proud history here. It looks forward to many more years as the old SW becomes the new SW Science and Math Magnet for next year. JKOTC A Tnapany Row Is J. Mansell, N. Lacy, T. Heyer, C. Lotte, A. Gorden Row Zs B. What is pep? Pep is pride and excitement for something. The purpose of Pep Club is to help encourage the athletic teams at SW. The core of Pep Club lies in 3 sguads— Honor-9, Pom Pon, and Cheerlead- ing. These squads are at almost every game and often perform at the games and assemblies. This year, Pep Club co-spon- sored a ’’Back To School dance with the Boosters Club, the Homecoming Dance, and the Winter Sports Dance. For the Winter Sports Basketball Queen candi- dates, there was a Roast where friends of the candidates exposed secrets. This year's Pep Club Executive Board was made up of President, Jamie Hopkins; Vice President, Janet Brooks; Secretary, Jenifer Publicity, Tammy Thornton; Critic, David Wilson; Sgt.-at- Arms, Laura Wilson, Melia Ellis, Sarah Still, and Lindsay Simmons. At the end of the year, there was a Pep Club Banquet where ail the new squads were introduceo and all the old squads were congratulated. Four members were elected for the Duke Duncan award for the most spirited person in each class. This year the awards went to Peth DeFoor, LaShawna Bishop, Terri Cain, and Jennifer Gordon. At the end of the banquet, all the members joined hands and sang the SW Alma Mater bringing a close to another year of the Indian Pep Club. SW defines Pom Pon as a unique race destined to ?utomatically fire up Indians by dancing and prancing in fancy costumes while grasping orn- amental tufts. Last May, 1987, 14 nervous girls auditioned for the 1987-88 Pom Pon squad. Of these, 8 talented girls were selected. With Jenifer Wvjtt and Melia Ellis as their co-captains, and Mrs. Kun as their sponsor, these oirls began preparations f r the upcoming school year, for most June meant summer vacation, but for the Pom Pon squad it meant 6:30 a.m. practices. On June 20, the squad et 'ut for the 4 day NCA camp In Emporia, Kansas with their ri practiced routine to P r y t. Body The girls returnee exhausted but with smiles on their faces, for they brought with them the spirit stick as well as many blue ribbons. When asked about camp, 1 member rep.'ied, NCA was a great camp! They worked us' hard ana we learned a lot of new routines. It was definitely worth the time and money spent. The squad opened the year with a novelty routine to You Can't Sit Down at orientation on August 27. Their 1st performance for the entire school was to Do the Dance at the pep assembly on September 25. This was followed by a kick routine to the tune of the SW band playing Give Me Some Livin' at Parents' Night the same evening. The girl-s continued boosting spirit and entertaining fans at football games, basketball games, parades and assemblies throughout the year. The 1987-88 Pom-Pom squad combined hard work, compromise, and dedication to SW to achieve a successful year of entertainment for Indian fans. 97 Varsity Cfieerkaders Top Row: Marquel White, Jamie Hopkins Second Row: Jennifer McCrath, Marybeth Adamson, Terri Cain Bottom Row: Patricia McCrae 98 by Jamie Hopkins The destiny of these 8 girls was decided one spring day. Under the leadership of Patricia McRae and Terri Cain, these girls would become very close! Their year started out in the summer when the squad met each Tuesday and Thursday evening to prepare for camp. These practices brought the U juniors and A seniors very close. The girls helped each other, encouraged each other, and shared ice water. When camp time rolled around, this squad was prepared. Roommates were picked along with all the cheers and chants. The varsity squad was about to participate in what would be the most trying time of their career. Although they were in the sun ten hours a day, no enemies were made. Patricia and Terri held the squad together to make it a success. Of course this was just the beginning cf a long year of cheering at football and basketball games. The varsity squad was required to attend about 30 games. The 8 girls never gave up until the very end. After all the fans had stopped cheering, the cheer- leaders were still there. Without strong leadership, a squad of any kind can't exist. That is where Patricia McCrae came in. She led the squad through all the games and made sure everyone wore the right uniforms and was prepared. Without a captain, a ‘.heer- leading squad can't be united, and unity is what cheerleading is all about. Cheerleading is work even though few people know it. But that doesn't really matter to cheerleaders. As long as they can get people to cheer along, it's worth it. The Honor-Nine squad consists of eleven spirited seniors who attend games to promote spirit, perform in assemblies as California Raisins, and generally make life more bearable for those lost souls full of Southwest Spirit that roam the halls here at Southwest. Each of the eleven Honor-Niners bears a letter and when they stand next to each other, guess what they spell?! S-O-U-T-H-W-E-S-T!! (With an Indian on each side!) The Honor-Niner's have Keith Hannaman to thank for sponsoring them and giving them his time and support without complaint. The theme, Walt Disney at SW, created a feeling of magic and gave everyone a wide variety of choices for the design of their float. The parade was at 2:00 in the Brookside area, floats included in this public procession were made by the Boosters Club, International Club, Stage Crew, and representatives of each class, from freshman to senior. Other participants were the Marching tribesmen, Po.n Pon, Honor-9, several JROTC Compa- nies, and, of course, the King and Queen candidates. After being judged during the parade, the winning floats were announced and driven around the IL field during half time ceremonies at the game. There was a tie for first place between the junior class' Dumbo float and the freshmen's castle. Second place was given to the sophomores' Disney castle. The International Club's dalmation placed third and the Booster Club's float received a special award for courage. Despite our 30-14 loss to the O'Hara Celtics, accompa- nied by the frigid weather, many Indians showed up at the YMCA enthusiastic, ready to dance the night away, and ready to cast their ballots for this year's Homecoming King and Queen. At 12:00 the results were in. The King and Queen candidates took their final walk. Mr. Matt Fulson_and Ms. Tracy Ashby were crowned 1987-88 Homecoming King and Queen by Mr. Steve Connaghan and Ms. Kim Trusty, last year's winners. Second runners-up were Byron Von Legget and Colleen Burke, first runners-up were Scott Lutman and Jennifer Gordon. Our new King and Queen led the final dance of the evening as things began to wind down. Although Homecoming was over, it was a day to remember. 02 Winter Sports JROTC BaCC by Karin Williams and Brandi Malone The winter sports festivities were kicked off by the annual roast, Saturday afternoon, February 20, at the Wornall Road Baptist Church, held especially for the candidates. It gave the candidates a chance to be thoroughly embarrassed by tall tales and deep, dark secrets told about them by their dearest friends. Linda Ingerly and Laura Wilson recalled a fond memory of Andrea Jonson standing in the Loose Park fountain while singing. Confessions were made concerning Marquel White's past love life. Finally, when the smoke had cleared, they were still friends. The candidates were anxiously awaiting the dance... After the roasting and the decorating, the dance was ready to begin. Many SW students showed up at the Country Club Congregational Church to vote for their favorite candidates and to dance the night away. The church was decorated in silver and pastel colors to support the theme A Hazy Shade of Winter. At 12:00, the hearts of 7 SW girls were beating fast. The question of who would be SW's 1988 Basketball Queen would at last be answered. The honor of Second Princess went to Tracey Walker, First Princess to Ronyta Johnson, and our new Basketball Queen, crowned by April Miller, was Andrea Jonson. The final dance of the evening was dedicated to the new queen, bringing to an end this year's Winter Sports festivities. The SW High School JROTC Ball was held Friday, February 19, at Arrowhead Stadium. The formal dinner dance was a joint effort of cadets from SW, Southeast, Westport, and Lincoln Academy. A formal dinner was served to approximately 22 SW cadets along with the cadets from the other schools, and was followed by an evening of dancing, socializing, and the presentation of the royalty court of each of the attending schools. Preceeding the coronation, there was an Officer's Grand March. SW officers marching were: Bt. Commander Darrell Green, Bt. Executive Officer Rodney Lovett, Bt. S-3 Herbet Sims, Bt. S-2 touis Floyd, and Bt. S-1 Marchai Leonard. Culminating the evening's activities was the crowning of the respective royal courts. Ms. Evelyn Belser crowned SW's JROTC Queen Stacy Shirley and court, which was comprised of Princesses Ronyta Johnson, Shalonda Wilson, Tammy Bouyer, and Marchai Leonard. The ball is the most important social function of the year for the JROTC unit. In recent years, due to declining enroll- ment in JROTC, several schools have combined in order to make the affair more gala. This year, there were no tuxes in sight. Male cadets wore dress uniforms and female cadets were given the option of ball gowns or dress uniforms; every female cadet chose to wear a gown. The SW faculty was represented by JROTC SI Major Beyer, JROTC instructer Sgt. and Mrs. Brouillette, Principal Ms. Belser, Assistant Principal and Mrs. Powell, and Mr. Tate. 104 Prom Queens: Robin Moerlien and Prom King: George Winston by Colleen Burke Prom has always been an affair to look forward to. It's an evening when couples can enjoy dressing glamorously and dining in the finest of restaurants. This year, prom took place on Friday May 6, from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The Empire Room, in which the dance was held, was colorfully decorated in shades of silver and blue. Baskets filled with chocolate kisses and decorated with balloons were carefully placed on each table. Other tables lining the walls were filled with deli- cious little chocolate truffles, various cheeses, nachos and fruit punch. Attendance was overwhelming. The room was soon filled with the delightful atmosphere of music and laughter. Marquise Kearney This year the Senior Business Committee organized a Prom King and Queen contest. Any senior was eligible to run. The idea was for the candidates to sell as many $1.00 raffle tickets as possible in order to help pay for prom expen- ses. The male and female candidates selling the most tickets would be awarded the title of Prom King or Queen. Interestingly enough, there was a tie for the title of Queen between Marquise Kearney and Robin Moerlien. Bobbi Ubben was then bestowed the honor of first attendant and Ronyta Johnson second attendant. George Winston won the title of Prom King by a landslide. As all good times come to an end, so did Prom. And As Time Goes By and those clocks tick away we'll look back and cherish these fond memories of Prom. Graduation by Steven Thomas The End. The Ceremony. Graduation. It is the culmin- ation, the vindication, the justification of four years of high school. It is the only reason some 230 seniors were able to suffer through the years, passing at least the minimum of 22 courses. This year's graduation was held at the Music Hall and began with the traditional proces- sional, giving parents a chance to snap pictures of the students in their pompous orange and black robes. The Concert Choir performed 2 selections after an inspired invocation. Several speeches and a flute solo followed, all well prepared and showing evidence of long hours of preparation, but the students were eager to get them over with, to get their diplomas and to get out and party. The guest speaker, Carl Boyd, took note of this, quite literally, and captivated his audience with apt speech and song. finally amid hysterical screams of amazement, relief, and pride, the big moment came. The students marched solemnly across the stage, receiving their symbolic diplomas and being congratulated by the school administrators. After everyone had crossed, the new graduates swept out through blazing flashbulbs into the lobby, where teary-eyed hugs and exclamations of exultation ensued. Many a parent or student could be heard to say almost disbelievingly, It's over! 107 Sixty T hird Street Wtrnall RoadTO Main (816) 444-8187 The Book Shop fit Brookside Sincv 1942 ROY BEATY 116 WEST 63RD STREET SANDY BEATY KANSAS CITY, MO 64113 S T T I I JOHN STILL ANO ASSOCIATES INCJNTERIOR DESGN SPACE PLANNING THREE EAST THfflTY FOURTH STREET KANSAS CITY MISSOURI 64111 816 753-0311 CLASS OF 1988 May the wind always be on your back and may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
