3 The Heart of SW Pals A Smile’s Charm Determination Strikes . . . 4 Student Life Student Life 5 6 7 8 Student Life Student Life 9 n 12 Student Life Morton, you’re so queer!” M. deZ. Student Life 13 15 Administration Living up to its reputation, Southwest has again proven to be an accredited institution of learning. Although bud- get cuts threatened the omittance of many elective classes, Southwest man- aged to keep those that were most pop- ular. Courses such as photography and science-fiction add spice to the curric- ulum, and at the same time, stir moti- vation in the student. The very walls of Southwest were filled with pride after the favorable results of the North Cen- tral Evaluation Committee were an- nounced. These guests praised, among many other points, the general atmo- sphere of the school and the attitude of its teachers and pupils. An accom- plishment that the entire school body should be proud of was each student’s ability and cooperation throughout the 1977-78 school year. Because a won- derful mix of people attended South- west, a unique opportunity presented itself. Together, students learned to understand one another. And so, we look back and think: Each year old faces depart from Southwest and new faces enter. But never-fear; Southwest will remain as always—a place of learning. Music was provided by Momingstar. The evening was highlighted with the crowning of Mr. Babydoll, Mike Smith. “King Mike” 98 Babydoll Homecoming “Nights in White Satin,” the theme of 1977 Homecom- ing, highlighted the weekend of October 22 at South- west. The activities began on Friday morning with the intro- duction of the queen candidates at the Homecoming as- sembly. After school, the candidates and their escorts led the parade through Indian territory. That night, Southwest shut out Central, 7-0, adding to the excite- ment of the day. The dance was held Saturday night as couples boogied to the sound of “Hot Foot.” At 11:00, Miss Mindy Mc- Crary was crowned queen. At 11:30, Southwest Home- coming 1977 became a memory. Almost any act imagin- able was suitable for this year’s theme, “The Bong Show”, and that’s exactly what the audience saw on those two nights. The judges, Brian Drummond, Bernee Long, and India McCanse, rated the performance of everything from “Robots” to friend- ly “Lumberjacks”. Lisa Merrill’s dancing and the “Magic Touch” of Brian Phillips were the winning acts and each took home the exciting prize of a week of free lunches in the school cafeteria. Some acts were not prize winners but were in no way losers either. Orchestra, Band, and Stage Band gave their traditionally excellent performances under the direction of Mr. Alter. The voices of Girls’ Choir, Concert Choir, and Belles and Beaux re- vealed to all the hours spent practicing with Mr. Foster. As Dave Penner and Jessica Chollet, Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, introduced the winning acts and presented the prizes, the final bong of Revels ’77 slowly died out. 102 Revels Revels 103 104 Revels Practice makes perfect? The Indians started out with an exciting victory over Winne- tonka, but lost its next four games. After an embarrassing de- feat by Rockhurst, Southwest started coming back, by win- ning their last five games one of which an exciting win over Southeast. The Indians found out later that two games: the Winnetonka, and Central games, were forfeited. Because of the forfeits, the Indians were forced to share the Interscholastic League Cham- pionship with three other teams namely: Southeast, East, and Paseo. However, Southwest knows who the champs really are! The Junior Varsity squad showed good form this season, despite a 4-and-2 record. All their games were league games and they put forth a good effort in each one. Their opponents were tough, but the Injuns were tougher. 124 J.V. Football freshmen The Freshmen Football team had an ex- cellent season, and was second in the In- terscholastic League. Its members put forth an outstanding effort to lead the team to a 6-and-l record. They outscored their opponents 80-8 in their first three games, and they were also the First Fresh- man team in five years to beat Rockhurst and Southeast in the same season. Way to go Freshmen! Girls’ Choir 159 a n On the East wall of the band room is painted in quite ordinary orange and black letters a quite ordinary word-PRIDE. But within the hearts of The Marching Tribesmen PRIDE is an extraordinary reality. Led in the classroom by Mr. Alter and on the field by Colin Hinkley, they definitely displayed the traditional spirit and loyalty. The 77-78 year was a hectic one high-lighted by the Halloween Parade, Veteran’s Day Parade, Vespers, Winter Concert and the State Music Contest. It was all brought to a close with a banquet celebrat- ing the activities of a talented and successful band. LAST ROW: Colin Hinkley, Nanette Muder, David Snyder. Andy Slankard.
