Construction Co., 604 OrearLeslie Bldg. Charles A. Smith, Architect. 1927. The same building today 1975. 1925. 1939. -t Southwest’s Fiftieth Graduating Class In Action Styles and attitudes have changed throughout the years, but Southwest High School is still going strong. The Fiftieth Graduating Class is proud of its heritage. However, today's class is quite different from preced- ing classes, being more diverse and spirited than ever before. Activities and classwork are performed in the spirit of today, and many people feel that yesterday's values are being thrown out. This idea is not completely valid, because never has a class worked so hard at making its senior year one of the best yet. Hall of Fame Verne E. Chaney Jr. 1941 President of the Thomas A. Everybody was glad to be back at school to see their friends after the long summer holiday. The Back-to-School Assembly oriented all new students and gave a glimpse of the great school year to come. Of course, we all wish that “summer would always be here.” One of the first things in order for the year was the Babydoll Dance. Six candidates were nominated for Mr. Babydoll. They were: Jim Quinly, Rick McDonald, David Hall, Terry Metzger, Pat Maggard, and Kevin Callahan. The actual crowning of Mr. Babydoll took place on October 5. Kevin Callahan was Mr. Babydoll, and Terry Metzger and Jim Quinly were the runners- up. “Eat cake, Cal! “Playgirl Magazine presents the five most wanted centerfolds. Kevin Callahan is obviously pleased at “Jimmy Angel is bored by all of the attention, getting Mr. Babydoll. 68 Homecoming The theme for Homecoming '74 was “Roaring 20’s. This year’s festivities began with the Homecoming assembly, the pa- rade with its beautifully decor- ated cars, the game which S.W. won 12-7 against Van Horn, and finally the height of Home- coming when Leslie Napshin was crowned queen. 69 Queen Candidates 70 Miss Kathy Pebley Miss Leslie Napshin 71 Homecoming Queen Redskin Revels This year's Redskin Revels con- tained some of the most outstand- ing talent that has ever been seen here at Southwest. This play is about an over-crowded, understaffed, New York City High School named Calvin Coolidge with all of its hilarious and heartbreaking problems. The play was presented to the student body fifth and sixth hours on December 13. Directing the play was Miss Lois Wilson, and the assistant director was Mrs. Barbara Stevenin. Because it did take place in a high school, the cast as well as the student body were able to relate to the play very well. 76 Cast Sylvia Barrett ..................................Jenny Hendrix Beatrice Schachter............................Josie Steinbacher Paul Barringer...............................................Tim O'Leary J.J. With their bandanas, chaps, parasols, pinafores, and pink lace dresses, the cast of “Oklahoma!” sang and danced their way through operetta this year. The story is a simple one dealing with two love triangles. Laurey, played by Anne Meeker, and Curly, played by David Prestigiacomo, were the main leads. The conflict is resolved when Laurey tells Jud off, and Curly and Laurey “let people say they're in love.” The other triangle involves Ado Annie, played by Darlene Williams, who has trouble deciding between “Persian goodbyes” and “Okla- homa hellos.” The play was directed by Mr. Foster and Mr. Alter. The school she attended was small, and everyone knew everyone else. One of the interesting things about the school was that the lockers were on the OUTSIDE of the school. Julie especially liked the “abundance of pine trees and the gorgeous sunrises. ” Gregg Hildner lived in a suburb of Portland, Oregon second semester of last year. While attending school, he noted that the kids were more liberal and less inhibited. Gregg seemed proud of the 4 A's and 2 B's he earned while in school. Carol McDonald, a junior this year, went second semester of her sophomore year to West Seneca, New York, a suburb of Buffalo. In contrast to Southwest, the high school she attended was only four years old. Carol especially enjoyed the frequent visits to Canada with her family. Heidi Peterson went to Suzano, Sao Paulo, in Brazil for 2M months last summer. Heidi lived in Portuguese- speaking Brazil with a Japanese family. Heidi said that besides learning some Japanese she learned to appreciate all different kinds of people. The only thing she regretted about her trip was the 10 pounds she gained while she was there. Louis A. House coached at Southwest from 1925 to 1954. During this time, he gained national recognition as one of the finest men in athletics. Ten of his football teams won or shared Interscholastic League titles, as did five of his basket- ball teams. He coached the track team to eleven league titles, including nine between 1944 and 1954. In recognition of Coach House’s many years of fine work, the class of 1955 named the athletic field for him. t 92 Louis A. The 1974 Southwest football team provided many exciting moments as the Indians compiled a 6-2-2 record. Only three games were decided by more than five points as leads frequently changed hands. Led by Kevin Callahan, Terry Metzger, and Steve Bell, the Indians consistently displayed a strong running game, while John Gill led a tough defense that came up with many big plays. The first game of the season ended in a 14-14 tie with highly touted Shawnee Mission South. Southwest had to come from behind to tie the game, then hung on as the Raiders drove toward the Indian goal line in the closing seconds. East and Raytown provided Southwest with its first two wins of the season, 35-0 and 14-10. After blowing a two-touchdown lead against Lincoln, the Tribe fought back to gain a 20-16 decision. A 21-21 tie with Paseo contained many thrilling plays, one of which was the return of the second-half kickoff for a touchdown by Caesar Blevins. This game also showed Southwest's amazing ability to come from behind. One highlight of a 57-3 win over Westport was a school record 71-yard punt by Larry Humbird, who gave the Indians excellent kicking all season. After losing to Central and Rockhurst, Southwest came from behind in the second half to defeat Van Horn, 12-7. The climax to an action-filled season came in the fourth quarter of the Southeast game when Southwest blocked an extra-point attempt to preserve a 14-13 victory and regain the Southside Trophy. 94 Standings Manual 6 1 0 SOUTHWEST 5 1 I Central 5 2 0 Van Horn 5 2 0 Southeast 4 2 I Paseo 3 3 J Lincoln 2 4 1 East 2 5 0 Westport 0 5 2 Northeast 0 7 0 The team rehearses its REVELS act. The season had several highlights, including a fourth place finish at the Oak Park Invitational against rugged competition and the de- feat of Rockhurst in a dual meet. The 1974-75 Southwest basketball team had an outstanding season, winning a school record 18 games, while losing only seven. A well-disciplined offense, strong rebounding, and a tenacious defense enabled the Indians to become a strong team. Led by all-league players Roger Schmitt and Mike Howard, the team won 12 of its last 15 games, and advanced to the finals of the regional tournament. The Indians were led throughout the year by Roger Schmitt, who led the team in scoring and rebounding and was named to the All-District team. Guards Mike Howard and Matt Ernst provided Southwest with solid play at the guard positions. At forward, Bill Christen and Dave Gorman gave fine efforts and came up with key plays. Bob Gorman and Mark Tyrrell frequently gave fine performances coming off the bench. Southwest opened the season by winning the Turkey Tournament and finishing third in the Interscholastic League tournament. Carrying a 6-4 record into the new year, the Indians brushed aside four opponents in a row before losing a close game to a strong Lincoln team. The Indians rebounded from this loss with two of their finest defensive performances of the year. In the finals of the Park Hill Tournament, the Indians held Liberty to only 12 points after three quarters as Southwest won, 45-30. The Indians' winning streak reached seven games as Pern Day was routed, 76-56. When compared to teams of past years, the 1974-75 Southwest swim team could be considered a disappoint- ment, since the Indians failed to win the league championship for the first time in many years. However, the swimmers captured fifth place in the District meet against tough competition. Mike Rush won both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races at District, and placed 9th and 12th at State in these events. Ernie Baskerville, Russ Reiling, and Eric Boy sen also gave strong performances throughout the year. With the loss of only one senior, the team can be ex- pected to make a strong comeback. 109 Hard work results in another victory. Jim Brown estab- lished himself as one of the top hurdlers in the area, and Caesar Blevins did well in the long jump and the triple jump. Belles and Beaux have performed for various civic organizations and church groups throughout the city as well as their regular performances at Southwest in Holiday Concerts and Redskin Revels. They have added a touch of class to the community by their excel- lent performances. The Stage Band, whose variety of talents is shown in such sounds as Big Band, Jazz, and Rock, entertained at many community events. Highlights in- cluded a performance at the Westport Golden Age Club and a festival at Southeast to raise funds for their band's uniforms. Always entertaining at school, they gave an outstanding per- formance in Redskin Revels while accompanying many acts. Playing for basketball games and assemblies, other successful performances were in the Fine Arts Festival in the spring and the Parent-Student Dance. As always, the Stage Band was a popular music group that had an outstanding year, but the variety of talents and personalities of the members made this year's group unique. Stage Band blows it again.
