Southwest High School started the '72 season with their strongest showing against non-league opponents in several years. The highlight of their non-league schedule was their victory over Rockhurst High School. Southwest earned their first victory and relieved their frustration that has virtually plagued them over the last decade of seasons. Two touchdown runs by Don Sloan and a touchdown pass from Peter Cipolla to Gary Oakley proved to be enough to make Southwest the victors in one of the most bitter rivalries in the city. Another big victory for the Southwest team was over Raytown High School. Southwest showed great offensive and defensive balance in scoring a 20-0 victory over a strong Raytown team. 52 Buddy shoots through the hole. F o 0 t b a 1 I Play it again Sam. Southwest's other non-league contests were against North Kansas City and Bish- op Miege High School. Southwest slipped and North Kansas City, led by Cliff Doran, succeeded in tying the tribe 13-13. Our next opponent was a highly tauted Bishop Miege team. The injury-plagued tribe was overwhelmed by a strong de- fense and a potent ground game offered by the Miege squad. The Southwest team managed only a Steve Haigh field goal in the contest. The final score in the losing effort was 14-3. Oakley and Birt get high on sports. 53 Newell and Co. trip up the defense. The Southwest Junior Varsity Football Team was one of the strongest squads in . the city. They showed their power by Junior Varsity posting a 7-1-1 season and claiming the league title. Coach Terry Huston used a straight forward attack. The team rode a potent offense and a sensational defense. FIRST ROW: left to right-Craig Inman, Jim Muller. The team seemed to have a good attitude toward athletics. Winning is always in the minds of players and the '73 team was no exception. The '73 team also had a good time playing and did not forget that basketball is only a game. The 1973 Wrestling team proved to be a little weak in some areas but can be described as up and coming . Led by Senior, John Kretsinger, the only regional qualifier. Southwest struggled to a 1-5 record. Seniors Mike Ramey, Steve Gunn, and Frank Storm had fine seasons along with Junior, Bob Altomare and Freshman, Mike Harvel. Although the record indicates a tough time for the wrestlers, they enjoyed the stiff competition and benefited from it. 62 Krets gets the decision. The Secondhands, Trackettes, and Grapplettes are very important to the swimming, track, and wrestling teams. Each group of girls performs many duties to assist the teams at their events. The Grapplettes time and keep score at home wrestling matches, and keep records. The Second- hands time swim meets, raise money for the team, and each girl has a Pep Pal, a member of the team to whom she writes, encouraging him to do his best at each meet. At track meets, the Trackettes conduct and time events, and kept records. All three groups support their teams by making house, locker and cafeteria signs and cheering them on during competition. 64 Secondhands BACK ROW. Sherrie Tanksley. The 1973 Varsity Golf team led by seniors Tom Hopper, Mike Snyder and Larry Glavas, enjoyed a fine season finishing with an impressive record in dual matches. Along with Juniors Dave Simon and Bob Morgan, Southwest fin- ished high in the District match and is looking forward to the State meet in Columbia. 69 Mike Snyder perfects his golf drive. Lenny's mobile. Auto Racing is an up and coming sport and pastime at Southwest High. Many hours of work go into making a smooth running machine that a person can be proud to race. This sport has gone unnoticed at Southwest for too long. It's time now to recognize the people who have the patience and determination to produce such automobiles. 71 FRONT ROW: left to right-Cliff Middleton, Gregg Francis, Mark Padilla, Ron Clond, Mark Czarnecki, Mike Kiser. SECOND ROW: left to right-Coach Jerry Kremer, Patrick Soden, Ken Tapp, Rick Anderson, Gary Oder, Dan Flake, Bob Swisher, Mark Hogan. y The '72 Southwest Cross-country team was not the winningest team in history, but proved to be one of the most dedicated and determined groups of young men. The boys were able to improve themselves throughout the year, and finally gelled as a team when they captured sixth place in the District meet. Coach Kremer expects a good returning squad as five out of the top seven runners are returning to action in '73. 72 Mark Hogan sticking it out. They met previously unbeaten Oak Park High School in a fierce fought battle at Arrowhead Stadium. The team fell behind early but fought back for a 21-13 victory. The scoring punch was provided by Don Sloan, Buddy McDonald and Pete Cipolla on runs of 7, 6, 13 respectively. The victory put Southwest in the State Finals. The State Championship game was played on muddy turf in St. Louis. Neither Southwest nor Hazelwood could muster an effective offense and the championship game ended in a 6-6 tie. They were EvaPia Darsbo from Stockholm, Sweden, and Joey Hoey from Randalstown, Ireland. Eva was at Southwest for four hours each day, then attended Rockhurst College for two hours. She partic- ularly enjoyed her Chemistry and History classes and was involved in Pep Club, International- Club, and Spanish Club. Joe found the many different types of people at Southwest intriguing, and liked the atmosphere of the school. He was especially happy with his Art, French, and American History classes in which he felt he learned a lot in addition to enjoying himself. AFS also sent two Southwest seniors to foreign countries during the summer. Stephanie Brown spent several weeks in Hyderabad, a beautiful city in Central India. She found her AFS family open, affectionate, and concerned about her impression of their country. Although the culture and people were strange to her, she sincerely enjoyed her stay and hopes to return. Lisa Campbell found her two and a half month stay in Santiago, Chile the most challenging and rewarding experience she had ever had, because she spoke a foreign language, learned new customs, and most important, she adjusted as a family member among people she had never met before. She is especially glad that she now has a warm and understanding Chilean family that she will always love. 89 Homecoming 1972 On October 13, Homecoming 1972, Good Morning, Starshine , began with an assembly in which the Homecoming Queen candi- dates were presented and South- west spirit was built up by Coach Robinson, the Pep Club, and cheerleaders. That afternoon, with the queen candidates' cars leading the way, the annual parade took place. The Russian Club float re- ceived first prize in the competi- tion, followed by German Club and ROTC, respectively. At the evening's football game, excite- ment reached its peak as the Southwest Indians whomped Central 29-6. 90 The Homecoming Dance, held the next night, was beautifully decorated by Pep Club members. It was a big success, as always, and the good music was provided by Salem Witch Trial. At 11:00, Staci Light was crowned 1972 Homecoming Queen. Her first attendant was Roxanne Eakins and second attendant was Christy Jones. 91 Miss Christy Jones Miss Debbie Rogozenski Miss Lesley King 92 1972 Homecoming Queen Miss Staci Light 93 Ohhhhhhhhhh. Could the friendly old janitor, Mr. Kovalesky, be guilty of murder? These were the questions of the students of Carson Corners High School in The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners , given February 2 and 3 at Southwest. Billy's friends plan a murder trial to answer their questions and find some surprising answers. It seems that due to neglect, carelessness, and misplaced priorities, many people were respon- sible for Billy's accidental death. The adults involved learn many lessons from their children in this thought-provoking play, and it was well done under the supervision of Mrs. Carlisle. 102 If you don't like this school, why don't you go where there's one that suits you! The show's story evolved around Dolly Gal- lagher Levi, a woman of many talents who is well-liked by everyone. She makes up her mind that she will marry Horace Vander- gelder, a rich but miserly store owner, before the idea even occurs to him. While she is plotting to have Mr. Vandergelder ask her to marry him, Dolly helps other people. With many comical consequences, she changes the lives of Horace's employees, daughter, and friends. By the end of the play, Mr. Vander- gelder seems a different man, the others involved are happier, and Dolly has reached her goal. Heaven knows Mother Nature always needs a little push. Accompanied by the Orchestra, the Choir next appeared before the Missouri State Teachers Convention in the Municipal Auditorium. They then helped make Revels a success with their performance of Carousel. After an excel- lent Winter Holiday Concert the Choir began rehears- ing for Hello Dolly, this year's operetta. The spring provided the Choir with a chance to demonstrate their abilities in the All City Choir Festival and the Fine Arts Festival. Normally Commencement would be the Choir's last performance but not this year. The Southwest Concert Choir was one of twenty high school choirs from all over the United States selected to participate in a tour of Budapest, Prague and Vienna. Eighty-five students will be rehearsing, per- forming and sight-seeing during the two week tour in July. This honor reveals the excellence which exists in the music department at Southwest. Their first performance was the Fall Concert in the Southwest auditorium. The Choir next added their talents to Redskins Revels with their rendition of Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof. The annual Holiday Concert concluded their first semester engagements. May saw the Girls' Choir participating in the Fine Arts Festival. This year besides participating in all Concert Choir activities, they are giving special concerts and performing before many social organi- zations. Through their diligent efforts the Belles and Beaux are doing a great deal to help send Concert Choir to Europe this summer. STAGE BAND The Stage Band has been very active this year. In November they helped make Revels a success with their outstanding performance. To improve their musical skills and techniques the Stage Band attended a clinic in the fall held by the Jones Music Company. Throughout the Holiday season they joined in the effort to send Concert Choir to Europe by playing with Belles and Beaux in many money-making concerts. The Stage Band added to the Holiday spirit when all their old members returned to play with them in their annual Holiday concert in the front hall of the school. B A N D The Band had a busy, exciting '12-12 school year. During football season the Band presented excellent halftime perfor- mances and raised school spirit in pep assemblies. The Band participated in the Raytown and American Royal Parades and were part of a mass band which dedicated KCI. The Band opened Redskin Revels by marching into the auditorium playing 76 Trombones. The Band dis- played its talents in the Winter Concert and annual Music Assembly. Spring brought a competitive schedule as the Band had a joint concert with Raytown High School, held a Band Festival and performed at District Contest and the Arts Festival. The Carnival Concert, an assembly at Bingham and an appearance in the ROTC Federal Inspection Parade rounded out the Band's spring season. 115 TOP ROW: Mr. Alter, Steve Barrett, Paul Mesler, Dave Smith, Neal Farnsworth, Mike Terry, Bill Wurst, Dan Wheeler. After the Orchestra's trip to Chicago last year they quieted down to an active but less strenuous 1972-73 season. Teamed with Con- cert Choir the Orchestra played in the Fall Concert and before the Missouri State Teach- ers Convention. Their performance of Jesus Christ Superstar in Redskin Revels added much to the program. During the holiday season the Orchestra displayed its talents in the Vesper ceremonies. The Orchestra again showed its ability in the Band and Orchestra Assembly and in several assemblies at Bing- ham. In the spring, the Orchestra participated in a joint concert with Truman High School and made its annual appearance in Operetta. The City Orchestra Festival, State CoYitest and the Arts Festival proved to be very competitive events for the Orchestra. Their performance in the National Honor Society Assembly rounded out a successful year. ROTC The ROTC has long been an important part of the Southwest curriculum. Through constant study and practice the ROTC has reached a degree of excellence seldom surpassed by other units. The Southwest ROTC participates in the Veterans Day Parade. In the spring there are two Federal Inspections, a Field Day involving all-city competition and the State Drill Team Competi- tion. Individual groups such as the Rifle Team and the Boys' Drill Team also compete in many events. The Exhibition Drill Squad performed with excellent precision in Redskin Revels. This year a new division was initiated, the Girls' ROTC Drill Team. They will also participate in the inspections and the state meet. The highlight of the year for the ROTC is the ROTC Ball planned for this April. 118 GIRLS' ROTC DRI LL TEAM Lunch, at last! STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council first semester has worked hard to eliminate its debts, but with little success. A movie, Concert for Bangladesh, was shown for Southwest students at the Brook- side Theatre. Those who attended the movie enjoyed it. Chet Nichols and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils appeared in concert at Southwest but were surprised to find the auditorium practically empty. Despite mon- ey-making failures the Council did succeed in rewriting the Constitution, something which has needed to be done for a long time. 120 SEVENTH ROW: Nancy Hause, Henry Scheldt, Conrad Jones, Frank Records, Keith Koenigsdorf, Bruce Tannahill, Bob Neil. STUDENT COUNCIL Second semester Student Council began on a promising note with the first effective and suc- cessful meeting of the year. Soon doubts were expressed as to whether Student Council is actually a representative body. A proposal to open all meetings to the entire student body caused much controversy and hindered business in the Student Council. The new Constitution which was compiled first semester was voted down and a committee was organized to compose another. This action provoked hours of heated debate. On the bright side, the Student Council succeeded in administering an all school drug survey which proved to be successful. FAN- TASIA, the 1973 Carnival, turned out to be a tremendous accomplishment due to the diligent efforts of the Carnival Committee members and their chairman, Larry Hawks. Hopefully by set- tling many of the most controversial issues in Student Council this year, next year's assembly can be more effective. 121 TOP ROW: Steve Box, Bill Svoboda, Frank Records, Keith Koenigsdorf, Mark Litwack, Andy Williams. RED CROSS First semester Red Cross has been very active in the school and the community. They held the annual girl-ask-boy Babydoll dance in September. It was a great success, being their chief money-making project of the semester. Several of the seniors involved in Red Cross helped organize and carry out the ALOT conference, a city-wide Red Cross conference held at Unity Village in November. Fort Leavenworth Hospital received some badly needed items donated by the Southwest Red Cross. During the Holiday season the Red Cross gave its annual Christmas party at Yates Elementary School. A family was also adopted by the Red Cross and provided with all the necessities for a Merry Christmas. The Southwest Red Cross has always been a very involved organization and they are looking forward to bigger and better things second semester. 122 FOURTH ROW: David Musgrave, Conrad Jones, Eric Chapman, Mike Garcia, Tim Little, Stuart Green, Keith Danielson. A Bookmobile drive was spon- sored to provide books for first through sixth graders this summer. The Southwest Red Cross provided prizes for bingo games at the Little Sisters of the Poor home for the elderly and also financed the purchase of an educational film for the downtown Red Cross. Fifteen blankets, provided by the Red Cross, were sent to an orphanage in Seville, Spain. Besides many service projects the Red Cross participated in Red Cross Youth night at the Kings basketball game. They also sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance which proved to be a tremendous success. The Southwest Red Cross continues to be one of the most active and beneficial organizations in the school. A new vice-principal, and several teachers were added to replace openings in various positions. As the year ends we can look back at the various changes that were initiated this year: 7th hour was deleted and 4th hour extended to 100 minutes, elective English and American History semester courses were introduced to the student, the loss of the Honor Pass System, and fewer assemblies kept the students geared toward the classroom and their studies. 163 Carol Cole Maxine Rains n A m Dorothy Sypkens Mary Yager Barbara Boysen Office Staff Mabel Adams Since 1950, Southwest has felt the dedication of Mabel Adams in all areas of the school. Her greatest joy has always been working with young people. After 22 years of service, Mrs. Adams will retire in June, 1973. She started at Southwest as a secretary to the counselors. In 1962, she became registrar, a big job at Southwest. In this capacity, Mrs. Adams served as secretary to Mr. Cannon and Mr. Kipp, as well as performing the duties of office manager in charge of smooth operation in the main office. Anyone with a problem could always depend on Mrs. Adams for the right answer and knowing how to handle the situation calmly.
