In the Manual game Southwest went on the ground, grinding out 301 yards. Jim McGuire, Bob Marquis, and Bob Bruegging all scored once for Southwest while Dick McDonnell who had a very ex- cellent game scored twice. Southwest defense also continued to show their superiority by allowing Manual only six points, which was on a kick-off return and a series of quick plays. This brought Southwest's record in the league to 3-0-1 and second in the standings. The fifth league game was with Van Horn. Southwest's defen- sive lineman Tom Curley set up the Indians' only score by recover- ing a fumble after he and another lineman, Dennis Bowman, had broken through to stop Van Horn's punt return. The Indians wasted no time scoring with Bob Bruegging hitting end Wayne Noel on a 26- yard pass, and Bob Marquis make the conversion to bring the score to 7-0 which it was to remain the rest of the game. In the first quarter of the game with Paseo, Bob Bruegging scor- ed on a 20-yard run, and the point after failed. Paseo then scored on an 88-yard punt return and they made the extra point, leaving the score 6-7, and it remained that way until the fourth quarter in which Southwest erupted for 26 points. Will Chappelow, playing his usual hardnosed football, blocked a punt on the Paseo 38-yard line. Bob Bruegging on the next series of downs ran the ball in for the touch- down. Bob Marquis then intercepted a Paseo pass and returned it 21 yards, and Paul Hulsey carried it in for the touchdown. Then, defen- sive tackle Dennis Bowman recovered a fumble and Bob Marquis passed twice to Craig Ewing for the score. Paseo made one more touchdown and point after, which left the score. 32-14, another vic- tory for the Indians. The last and deciding game of the season now approached and all were waiting in anticipation. Not only was it the traditional Southwest-Southeast game, but it was also Homecoming. Southeast scored first on an 83-yard drive which took 17 plays. Southwest then fought back and Bob Bruegging scored on a quarter-back sneak and Bob Marquis added the extra point. With three short but decisive seconds, Southeast threw a pass which left the score 12-7 at half. At the beginning of the second half Greg Wegner recovered a fumble, but no score was made, and the ball went to Southeast. They then scored again on a fumble deep in Southwest territory. Bob Marquis then made a touchdown for Southwest, making the final score 19-14. Southwest had suffered its only loss in league play, yet this game cost the Indians a much deserved and fought for championship title. Southwest posted a 7-2-1 overall record and finished second in the league with a 5-1-1 record. The school can be proud of its fine team and coaching staff led by Head Coach Bill Robinson who was assisted b Line Coach Jack Weyforth and Backfield Coach Jim Mo - Y riarty. Special thanks are due the managers for their support and many hours of work. Particular recognition should be given Charlie Atwell who has devoted himself contantly to helping the athletic de- partment during his five years at Southwest. Southwest was rated eighth by The Kansas City Star in its ranking of Kansas City Area High Schools. More members of its team ranked on the All-City than any other school. First team All- City were: Clark Skinner CCD, Will Chappelow CGD, Glen Demming CED, and Bob Marquis CSD.
