1n a world as fast-moving as this one, even the small period of one year can contain a multitude of varied experiences and moods. Students at South- west felt change and growth in themselves and their school from start to finish during the 1963 study year. The thrill of athletic victory swept the school in the fall. ln the classroom, irritation at the noisy construction work nagged at struggling brains. Stu- dent pride soared with national recognition of South- west's excellence in several fields. ln spite of the easy routine of classes and activities, young spirits longed for the freedom of summer. Deeper than the wide range of feelings experienced by the entire student body were the daily problems and triumphs of each individual. For each, 1963 meant different attitudes and ideas which combined to make a composite picture of school life. The pur- pose of a yearbook is to capture the spirit as well as the important events of a study year. lt is hoped that the 1963 Sachem will portray for each student those ideas and happenings he wishes to cherish among his fondest memories of Southwest High School. 5
