.X .Q Q .a .s. ,..-s., iv-a Our old buddy Rags has for years been one of the most popular characters around school. Seen Around School The year of the Sputniks and the Vanguards wit- nessed some striking changes in the American scene. NVe finally beat Shawnee-Mission in foot- ball! Chemises and trapezes were going out of style Cthank heavenj, but ivy league seemed here to stay. On the academic side. accelerated math classes, working closely with the science depart- ment, hailed a new approach to science education. In addition, Southwest became the first school in the city to offer Russian and college credit in American History. Those people we saw wander- ing sleepily in our crowded halls were the chosen few who were privileged to attend 7:30 classes. XVith the new junior high rapidly going up, less crowded conditions were in sight for next year. XVhile this school year was definitely one of progress and change, not everything was radically different. YVe still had the good old Southwest routine. Assignments and tests competed with dances and dates for our valuable time. Seniors, after struggling through College Boards and en- trance applications and research essays, looked back longingly on the carefree underclass years. Underclassmen, on the other hand, looked forward to the pampered life of seniors. High school years are all too shortg and, true to form, the pleasant experiences of this one came to an abrupt close. XVherever We go and whatever we do, Southwest in ,58 and ,59 will be a time and a place we will al- ways remember. Music room? I couIdn't tell you- Fm new here myselff'
