But tlle gales soon rise ancl lasll in fury, and llic limbs, twistecl and torn from the palms ancl clasliecl wilclly upon the lueaclm, lie in a chaotic, tangled mass of green wllile lielpless trunlcs crasll violently clown upon the sands. The ceclars ancl pines of tlme west struggle valiantly for exist- ence on tlle pealcs and among tl1e roclcs of the mountains.
