These are Longhorns you have cheered for at the games and meets. To be qualified for membership, a boy must have a letter in one of the major sports. Anyone earning a letter in either football, basketball, track, baseball, tennis, or golf, is welcome. The primary objective of the Letterme-n is to further intensify interest in athletic activities, although the club occasionally sponsors a social event. One of the social events co-sponsored by the Lettermen's Club and the Student Council is the annual Miss Southwest dance. Twenty-three

Wviaa Soufkwaf The social event of the year was held in honor of Miss Southwest and her Maids on October 15, 1954. Our leading men of the athletic field, the Letterments Club, put the spotlight on Miss Southwest of 1954-Jackie Roux. Supporting roles were played by her charming maids: Ruth Allen, Carole Bau- meister, Paula Biggs, Lonnie Hen- derson, Barbara Jones, Deane Peters, Judy Rascher and Ruth Ann White. After the coronation the student body and friends at- tended the annual dance, sponsored jointly by the Student Council and the Lettermen's Club. Age? ectcler-4 To lead the fans in cheers is their duty. , Yes, the cheerleaders' purpose is manifold SDOHSOFI M11 F0111 and these girls do their best to fulhll the undertaking. Led by Captain Jackie Roux, the cheerleaders are at every athletic event, rain or shine. In addition, this group-, shown in the picture above, has done an excellent job of breaking in the new G l L' St l' Th ' th e S uthwest boy' wer inspired Cheerleaders' Capltained me am .by oi: perllcey chleerleaders N e C Sharon Robinson, red, Suzy Weber, Yvonne Ede- len, Jan Zinzer, Joy Graves, and Carole Duke will take over at next year's games. Stringent effforts are re- quired to earn a cheerleader letter. First, a cheerleader must meet the same scholastic requirements demanded for athletic participation, and her citizenship must be sanctioned by the administration. Next, the difficult part, a cheerlead- er must be elected by the stu- dent body for one year. Here- after, she must be at every practice and at every activity to which she has been as- signed. As you can see, a group of 'I rifq-four girls with boundless energy and never-ending cheer are our cheerleaders.
