GPERETTA TRYOUTS I BY FLORENCE KLUC There are certarn requrrements absolutely necessary to competmg rn operetta tryouts nerves of rron an unlrmrted amount ot patrence and rntestrnal fortrtude I can personally vouch for these three necessrtres and after surxrxrng two sessrons at Southwest alone I feel well qualrfied to express myself on thrs sublect As my part rn the Mrkado was con srderably larger than that of the Frretly and meant a great deal more to me I wrll use rt as my rllustratron Wrth the first announcement of operetta tryouts I 1 as rmmedrately rn a drther as to what I would srng My vocal teacher cleared up thrs prob lem for me a few days later wrth the suggestron that I rng a selectron by Landon Ronald I gladly took her advrce and rn the srx days remarn rng untrl tryouts I earnestly trred to rmproye my stage presence and to learn my song perfectly On the fatal day my rmagrnatron began to play trrcks on me I could have sworn I had a cold or at least the begrnnrng of one My worrrsome nature got the best of me and when my lunch perrod rolled around I decrded to ask the lunchroom manager for a lemon to get rrd of the phlegm rn my throat She most gracrously procured one for me and wrthout further ado I began suckrng rt It worked and as mv throat telt better my sprrrts brrghtened When the hands of the clock reached three I took a frnal suck on my lemon and dreadfully nervous ascended the starrs to Room 413 As we sat there talkrng over our chances tensron rn the room steadrly rncreased untrl I thought I would go mad Frnally the Judges arrrved and the sessron was under way It occurred to me after ten tryouts that rt was rather stuprd to srt there makrng a nervous wreck of myself so gatherrng every brt of courage rn me I rarsed my hand to be next My knees shook lrke relly as I felt courage steadrly grew and the shakrness drsappeared from my vorce At last' It was over and to my surprrse 'Vhss Meyer motroned to me Not knowrng exactly what to expect I went to her w rth uncertarnty I could haxe leaped for Joy when all three Judges congratulated me and remarked on the rmprovement rn my xorce Thankrnff them from the bottom of my heart I walked out the room rn a sprrrt so yubrlant that nothrng could haxe angered me That nrght I xrsrted church to thank God for helprng me that dav and for stavrng off my rnevrtable cold I say rnevrtable because by the next mornrng I was the vrctrm of a bad cold and sore throat Not realrzrng or not wrshrng to realrfe the serrousness of my cold I w ent to school new er theless In a way I was rewarded rn that I was asked to attend the second ary tryouts three days later but I also sprted myself by further aggrax at mg my cold To me the next two days were the most mrserable I had ever spent both physrcally and mentally I drank frurt rurces sucked cough drops rnhaled trncture of benzorne swallowed Yrcks and more rmportant lay rn bed worryrng whether my xorce would be rn any condrtron to srng on rrrday Frrday came around and I went to school At three oclock about twenty of us assembled on the stage Vlrraculousls my xorce sounded w ell consrderrng I had scar celv been able to speak for two days After that we were sued up and told we could go home Now I drdnt know where I stood fu nzus A I 1 Q 1 . l u 1 111 1 ' l ' ' v 1 ' 1 .
