It seems only yesterday that each of us ambled over to Russell High School, waiting for our own building to be finished. While still attending classes at Russell High, our student body chose red and gold as the school colors and '6Wolves', as our name. Sometime in October the doors of our new Southwest were thrown open, although there was still work to be done on our building. Students were warned to stay away from the wet paint and to stay out of the way of the workmen. Despite these warnings, we seniors, who were sub-freshmen then, still have smudges of green paint on some of our clothes. In October the first school paper came off the press. But, alas, it was nameless. Suggestions from the students, however, quickly solved this problem, and the question mark became the Howl.,' When the plans for this high school on the corner of Lynhurst and Sewell were drawn up, the Board of Education gave the new school the name of Southwest. Many students did not particularly care for this name, so three new names were suggested-J. B. Hood, A B C, and Lynhurst. After tabulating the votes it appeared that the students liked the name Southwest better than they thought because it won by a large majority. Our athletic department got under way soon after our school was begun. This included the organizing of the four major teams-football, basketball, baseball, and track, as well as the minor sports. Of course, with the development of school spirit, there arose a need for the choosing of cheerleaders. It was, however, two years later that our band and majorettes began to take an active part in our school life. In 1951 with our first senior class, our first year- hook, the Resume, came to life. In April of this year our senior rings were selected. The rings of ten-carat gold feature the school motto, 'fUnita Eortoirn fStronger because unitedj, the front of the building in detail, and on the opposite shank a wolf head over a weather vane which shows the direction of Southwest. Then March, 1952, heralded the birth of Southwest's Alma Mater. The words were written by Richard Link, a senior, and set to the tune of Halls of Ivyf' What a thrill runs down our spines as we raise our voices in this grand old song! As we approach the conclusion of our high school days, we look forward to a future filled with as many accomplishments as we have achieved in the last five years. With such capable leadership by the senior class officers, President, John Bergstrom, Vice-President, David Scoggins, Secretary, Patty Yarbrough, and Treas- urer, Trannell Hardin, we feel that our class has been very successful and most outstanding. The Howl staff this year has given Southwest its first printed paper, and has kept the student body well in- formed of every phase of school life. Marie Allen, Edi- tor, Barbara Bearden, Associate Editor, Janell Blood- worth, Feature Editor, and Jackie Heard, Society Editor, deserve much credit for all their long hours of hard work. The Resume Staff deserves equal credit for their successful achievement in producing such a representa- tive yearbook. Nancy Dunstan, Editor, Patty Yarbrough, Literary Editor, John Bergstrom, Advertising Man- ager, and Byron Hill, Business Manager, have supplied topnotch leadership in this enterprise. Individual members of the senior class deserve special recognition. John Bergstrom was awarded the Harvard Book as the most outstanding Junior boy, Jack Rosser and Jimmy St. John won high, prizes in city essay con- tests, Elizabeth Brown, a good citizenship award, and Margie Anna Langston, Southwest's Homemaker of Tomorrow. In 1952, a two-party political system was introduced in our school. This year, after a thrilling campaign filled with fiery speeches, gay banners and great enthusi- asm, Hal Watts was elected president of the student body with Nathan Mills as the Vice-President and Elizabeth Brown as the Secretary-Treasurer. The friendship of the students and the co-operation of the teachers have made our high school years very happy and unforgettable. And so, as we prepare for our graduation, our voices happily blend in the true words of our Alma Mater, '4We'll ne'er forget Southwestf' apezfaldaea Our Senior year is highlighted hy the election of superlatives. For weeks heforc the selection of these honored few, there is a feeling of tenseness and excitement among all Seniors. After much discussion, each student is given an opportunity to write his choice for these coveted titles. Because of the high quality of all the seniors, the task of selecting the most outstanding members of our class was dillicull. However, after much careful thought and consideration, we present to you our choice. 37 Wont papa ow PATTY YARBROUGH NATHAN MILLS 'xlllllly lu gvl LIIHIIQI hill! slu- rlvnls and lvzu'hm-rs alike luxu- Illillll' If-YIVINY and N-X'l'll'NN uul- slzlmling Ill1'lllII4'l's of om' 1-lass. Hussigtl. C, HATCH SGT. ALBERT MCAULIFFE Ser. CHARLES WILSON HISTORY OF OUR MILITARY DEPARTMENT The military department of Southwest was organized in September of l952. It was under the direction of Captain John L. Lewis. Asst. P.IVl.S.2iT., and IVIfSgt. John Viv. Criney. Sergeant Instructor. Its olliee was in a small room across from the gym. There was no room for an armory, so the rifles had to be kept in movable racks in the hall. The supply room was located ofI' the boiler room where clothes and other military supplies were kept. Our military department began operation with one hundreql twelve caliber 30 M-l rilles. A rille team was organized but had to use the range and other facilities at Brown High School for practice and for the actual firing of the matches. In this first year of operation two companies were organized which were designated as Companies A and B. The Battalion Commander was Lt. Col. Marvin MeAnsh. Our second year of operation gave us a completely new military department. It consisted of two ollices, an armory, two supply rooms, and a modern rifle range. The department was under the supervision of Captain Lawrence E. Enterkin, Asst. P. M. S. St T., and Sgt. Dar- nelle C. Craven, Sergeant Instructor. Our Battalion Com- mander was Lt. Col. Ronald Lewis. During our second year we received, in addition to our M-I rifles, I4 Caliber 30 Carbine Rifles. The Cadet Master Sergeants carried these rifles in drill while the other N'.C.O.'s and the Privates carried the M-1. Another company was organized this year which made our unit a three-company battalion. This third year of operation gave us our first M-III Class. There are eighteen Seniors in this class who make up the Cadet ollicers. Six Browning Automatic Rifles and a 3.5 Rock Launcher have been added to our growing armory. The Department is now under the supervision of Captain Russell C. Hatch, Asst. P. M. S. 81 T., and lVIfSgt. Albert McAuliffe. Sergeant Instructor. The Battalion Commander is Lt. Col. John Bergstrom. Our Rifle Team has done exceptionally well this year and is rated close to the top in the city standings. We are extremely proud of our ROTC unit and know it will continue to represent Southwest creditably. Standing: Sgt. McAuliHe, Sgt. Sanders, Sgt. Criney, Sgt. Wilson. Seated: Capt. Hatch. Lt. Col. J. Getting together a creditable yearhook is always a ehallenge to them. In the spring after the 1ii'SLlIllCl for the current year has gone to press, the .lunior Class has a very important class meeting. The purpose of this meeting is to hear the memlmers of the Resume Staff discuss the duties and responsibilities of eaeh ollieer. Then, after this disc-ussion, the ,luniors eleet the liditor, Literary Editor. Business lilanager, ami Advertising Manager for the following year. Several joint meetings with the old Staff and Advisors are held at which time the new memliers learn something of the proeedure followed in setting up plans for the yearhook for another year. Then these four ollieers are allowed to ehoose their assistants. During the summer months this new staff studies the lay-outs of yearlmooks and begins to get ideas for the next hook. 'llhis plan seems to eliminate unneeessary delay and eonfusion in getting off to a good start the following September. The Resume? Unly the swish-swish of the janitor's broom breaks the silence. The rooms are empty, the school day is over, but still the members of the Howl Staff work on, rushing to beat the seemingly ever-present deadline. This year the Stall has attained one of the goals it has worked toward since 1951-the publishing of a printed edition of the paper rather than a mimeographed one. Each member strives to make the paper interesting, informative, and amusing to every person in the school. The articles keep students informed on the current news, the latest fashions, and the season sports. Under the roof of Southwest can be found one of the most able coaching staffs in the city. This year they have achieved great popularity with the fans as well as with the players. Their thorough knowledge of their particular phase of the game and their keen sense of value have been greatly appreciated by us at Southwest. MANAGERS With every sports event: there are managers present. Often times these necessary students are forgotten, but theirs is an important job. In the afternoon practices they tape ankles, issue equipment. see that uniforms are cleaned and put up, and account for the balls. Then, too, they are entirely responsible for the equipment and the well being of the athlete during the game. Southwest has the privilege of having a very cooperative group of managers. Basketball at South- west got off to a bad start. The young hoopsters, suffering from lack of experience, however, rose up to crush our arch rival, the Brown High Rebels, by a score of 87-72. The courtmen had the service of only three returning boys. On the following night the Wolves forced Sylvan, the southern division leaders, into an overtime but finally bowed by a Hve-point loss, 43-48. Next year we hope to have a much improved team, as we have no graduating members. S C O R E B O A R D Southwest 45 ....... Roosevelt 63 Southwest 48 . . . Brown Sl Southwest 54 . . . This is the second year that Southwest has been represented in the Southeastern interscholastic and the Atlanta High School swimming meets. Thu fact that our school is not equipped with a swimming pool did not stop Martha Tovell and Joanne Lock, because their willingness to get ahead urged them to many hours of practice after school at the athletic club and the Y, W. C. A. Last year our team could not compete for sf-hool trophies because we lacked a sulhcient number to make a complete team. Once we attain a complete team, however, Southwest will be eligible to compete in the relays interscholastically and possibly win a few trophies. 120 is r R i BOYS' TENNIS GIRLS' TENNIS Tennis is becoming a more popular sport with our students since our courts have been improved. Staircase: A patient whose eyes won't close. One time there were two men going through a cafeteria line. The man in front had one carrot stuck in each ear. The man behind asked him, Why have you got those carrots in your ears?7' No answer. He repeated his query louder. Still no answer. He repeated the question again still louder. This time the man in front turned around and took the carrots out of his ears. He asked, Were you talking to me?
