CLHSS HISTURU lt was with mixed emotions that we, the future class of '53, arrived at our new high school and pre- pared to start our student activities anew. This first year was spent in organizing clubs, starting the sports program, and last, but certainly not least, learning the things that would enable us to graduate eventually. To us was given the unique privilege of beginning the customs which would later become the time-honored traditions of the school. The first honor won was by our Glee Club, which progressed so rapidly and well, that it won a rating of superior at the District Music Meet. This first year was brought to a triumphant close by the Sophomore-Junior Dance, the theme of which was Moonlight and Roses. Both classes cooperated in making the dance a huge success. The following September we all came trooping back, ready, as juniors, to penetrate the mysteries of geometry, history, and Latin. One of our first duties was to elect our class oflicers, who were as follows: Eugene Miller, President, Sonny Cheatham, Vice Presidentg -Ioanne Strange, Secretary, Evelyn Malone, Treasurer. Two of our classmates, Isabelle Winters and Ronnie Edwards, won great honor for us this year by being crowned the King and Queen of Hearts. Another outstanding event of the year, the election of the student body officers, was held that Spring. Cries for the Eagles or the Falcons, the two political parties, were heard for days, campaign speeches were made, and much politickin' was done. Finally the great day was at hand, the day that the votes would be cast and counted. After the flurry of counting was over, we realized with pride that the student body had elected two of our classmates as officers 4 Eugene Miller as President and Gene Dempsey as Vice President. Two trophies were won for us this year- one by the Civitan Club, which was voted the outstanding club in Georgia, and the other by the Girls' Basket- ball Team, which climaxcd the many thrills they gave us by bringing home the 2nd Place Trophy in the GA. AAU Basketball Tournament. We brought our Junior year to a happy end by playing host to the Seniors at the junior-Senior Prom. Our high ideals and hopes for the coming year were refiected in the theme we picked for this dance- Stairway to the Stars. And thus the second year at our new school was ended. Now at long last, we were the grand and glorious Seniors, the leaders of the school. We resolved that in whatever we did throughout the coming year that we would always strive to make our class a model for the younger ones to follow. Through all of our adventures and problems, over the hurdles of ordering invitations and organizing new clubs, we were ably led by the counselors, faculty, and class oliicers. Our officers were Sonny Cheatham, President, Gene Dempsey, Vice President, Joanne Strange, Secretary, and Bernie Thompson, Treasurer. Among other tasks, we spent long, grueling hours of nerve-racking thought in selecting the outstanding members of our class, the Superlatives, and we also began work on our annual, the Resume, which was our pride and joy. A Senior could always be found - playing a trum- pet in the band, writing for the school paper, the Howl, selling ads for the Resume, spurring the team on to victory as a cheerleader, planting trees for the Civitans, taking part in a skit, serving as a judge on the Student Court, working in the School Bank, work- ing industriously for the Student Council, or in prac- tically any capacity one might name. In all these many and varied activities we were always striving to the utmost to make our class the best. Again our Girls' Basketball Team brought honor to the school by winning third place in the city league tournament and once again being runner up in the GA. AAU tournament. At all sports events, boys or girls, we were praised for our good sportsmanship and outstanding school spirit. Formal dances were plentiful this last year, begin- ning with the Harvest Ball and ending with the Senior Dance, which was held in the Sky Room of the City Auditorium. After almost all these dances, formal and otherwise, impromptu parties, consisting mainly of Seniors, were held at Joe Cotton's. At last the great day arrived -the day on which we were to leave, never again to return in our former status as students. As we sat on the brightly lit stage, we gave silent thanks to our parents and teachers who had helped to bring us to this beautiful archway of maturity, our high school graduation. So, as our turn came, we stepped forward eagerly to receive our hard- earned diplomas, realizing that one phase of our youth was gone, but that we would now be able to explore wider horizons and to take our places in this ad- vancing age as young adults.
