Senior Class History In the fall of 1959, the graduating class of 1963 encountered the first of four great years at Southwest. This new way of school life was an exciting, new experience. In our new surroundings the freshman class settled down to strenuous work and everyday life. Everyone entered into the social life by attending the Sadie Hawkins and Masquerade Dances. With one full year of high school behind, the Sophomores were able to keep with the pace of the school. Leading the class in school activities were Lynn Adcock, President, Brenda Barney, Miriam Brewer, Gaye Martin, Shirley Parker, Tink Schaffer, Lanier Woosley,Vice-Presidents, Laura Hampton, Secretary, and Betty Brewer, Treasurer. Aiding greatly in the sports department this year were Betty Brewer, Jayne Lineback, Phoebe Lineback, Dewey Kiger, Bucky Martin, Ronnie Matthews, and Steve Sloan. Our class was well represented in the various courts with Betty Brewer, Martha Hardin, and Sandy Hunter in the Homecoming Court and Bonnie Howard in the Christmas Court. Now we were upperclassmen. Organization of the Junior Class began with the election of such capable class officers as Bucky Martin, President, Leonard Hayes, Nancy Huff, Shirley Parker, and Dale Stelter, Vice-President, Laura Hampton, Secretary, and Miriam Brewer, Treasurer. Our class was honored with Bucky Martin being placed on the All Conference Football Team and Martha Hardin receiving the D.A. R. Citizenship award. In the social light, Steve Sloan and Martha Hardin were crowned Valentine Sweethearts.Joan Bodsford brought fame to our class by winning first place in the Southwest Follies. The commencement exercises were aided by the following Junior Marshals: Lynn Adcock, Betty Brewer, Miriam Brewer, Laura Hampton, Martha Hardin, Nancy Huff, Bonnie Howard, Linda Jones, Shirley Parker, Betty Newsom, Phyllis Tilley, Bucky Martin, H.V. Milner, and Gilbert Mullis. The finale of our high school career began under the supervision of these Senior Class officers: H.V. Milner, Pres- identg Brenda Ketner, Geraldine Vogler, Harold Elmore, Bonnie Howard, Joyce Shields, Vice-Presidents, Betty Newsom, Secretary, and Martha Hardin, Treasurer. Other school leaders from our class were Bucky Martin, Student Council President, Phyllis Tilley, Secretary, and Betty Brewer, Treasurer. In addition Hazel Gordon, Editor of the Odyssey and Laura Hampton, Editor of the kept the students well informed with the newspaper and annual. Leading the school spirit were Miriam Brewer chief cheer- leader, and Linda Jones, chief majorette. Martha Hardin was crowned Homecoming Queen. Betty Newsom and Bucky Martin were honored by receiving the Outstanding Junior Citizens Awards from Winston-Salem Jaycees. We were fortunate in the advancement of our football team. Coach Young gave us the reputation of the Fighting Trojans. Bucky Martin and Eddie Scharff were honored by being maned to the All-Conference team. Our cage team also had a winning season, led by Don Collins, an All-Conference player. These girls were placed on the All-Conference team: Phyllis Tilley, Phoebe Lineback, Betty Brewer, Martha Hardin, and Hazel Gordon. Mr. J. Gilmer Binkley led the Southwest mat team to the Forsyth County and Tournament Championships. Miss Cook led the girls volleyball and softball teams to the conference championships. Realizing that we would soon end our high school career, we participated in many important activities-athletic picnics, class picnic, Class Day, Baccalaureate Sermon, and graduation. As each day passed, our minds pondered our motto, So little done, so much to do. BETTY JOYCE NEWSOM R.E. SCHARFF, JR. Class Historians 154
