Written By: Carolyn Yvonne Johnson MOTTO Yesterday we were led. Today we follow. Tomorrow we shall lead! Senior Class History As our school days end, we the Seniors cherish deeply the memories of the days gone by. Taking a backward look to the fall of '56 as we began a strange and ex- citing life in our beautiful, new school, it was indeed with mixed emotions and feelings that we met people from three other sections. To start the new year, the Senior Class was one hundred and twenty. We gailed a few; some left’us; but still our class was a good working unit. With the aid of our faculty advisors: Miss Frances Cook, Mrs. Betty Zammit, Miss Daphne Campbell and Mr. Dixon Roberts, the Senior Class quickly acclimated itself and began tackling the many decisions which had to be made. Shortly afterwards, the election of class officers was held. With President, Mervin Garrison, Secretary, Jean Tise, Treasurer, Harold Sheets, and Vice-Presidents, Gene Hoots, Judy Ellingham, Charles Parker and Rex Luck, the Senior Class moved forward under their able leadership. Our first new experience was the posing and snapping of our Senior pictures. Our memories take us back too, to College Day when we visited and talked about preparing for the future with different representatives from colleges, and caught a slight peep into a vast new world. The election of superlatives was interesting and exciting for each of us. Although only a very few had the honor of being voted a super , we all felt on top of the world. Next c ame the selection of our mascots, the annual dedication, and the choice of class colors, truly highlights of our senior year. We felt very satisfied oer our.annual went to press, and we waited impatiently for its return, bound, polished and f ih ith our work, honors and achievements. Our attitudes ait actions on Kids made us realize that though our school 4 and the Baccalaureate emer mith ‘be The night we received our dip of our own. We no longer were adults in the business world. | the future with warm courage and high hoes. The past is ees a memory; the future, a reality, not a dream. Historians: Phyllis Burton Rex Luck Last Will and Testament We, the 1957 Senior Class of Southwest High School, being of sound body and mind and realizing the approaching unavoidable death of our class, do hereby decree this document to be our Last Will and Testament. We wish to surrender the following worn, but cherished possessions: ARTICLE | SECTION | To Mr. Simpson, upon whose shoulders has fallen the greatest load of our troubles and who has unselfishly conducted us through this first year at Southwest; we leave with all sincerity our appreciation and humble thanks for his untiring work with us. Without his aid and companionship we couldn't have made ir. SECTION II For their neverending patience and helpfulness, we bequeath the teachers our intelligence which we were supposed to have received, but which nevertheless re- mained in the books, from us to more mature delinquents. SECTION III To the rising senior class, we place in your hands all the honors and hardships of being called seniors and are sure you will use them in a way best befitting you. SECTION IV To the sophomores we leave The Little Red School House, all the old worn books, the exhausted teachers, and hope your three years of high school will be as enjoyable as ours. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL COACH-OF-YEA Miss Frances Cook, girls' basketball coach, was named county coach of the year by the county coaches. Miss Cook, whose hobby is sports, did an outstanding job combining the three schools, South Fork, Clemmons, and Lewis- ville, into Southwest's first team. Since the gym was not finish- ed at the beginning of the year, the Trojans practiced at Clemmons. A native of Mebane, Miss Cook played high school basket- ball four years. She worked in the hosiery mill for a year be- fore going to Appalachian State Teachers College. However, she was not certain as to what she wanted to major in at that time. After her graduation from college, she coached basketball at Clemmons and remained there until coming to Southwest this year. CONGRATULATIONS MISS COOK! JOE POPP SELECTED COUNTY'S TOP COACH | Joe Popp, Coach of the Southwest High Trojans, was select- ed Forsyth County Coach of the y ear by vote of his football coaching colleagues. Popp came to Southwest from Jonesville High this fall. He took six-man football players from Clemmons, South Fork and Lewisville, and his team won the Class AA-C county title by tying Walkertown and beating Glenn. On a won-lost basis the team record wasn't too impressive but as one of the coaches who voted for Popp put it, Joe did an outstanding job to take boys who had never played 1l-man football, who had never worked together and teach them that complicated multiple offense. They ran it very well considering. Popp gives all the credit to the boys. They came along much faster than | ever thought they would, he said. He pointed out that learning 11-man football was almost like learn- inga brand new game to these six-man players. For instance, said Popp, “we had to train guards and tackles. None of the boys had ever played these positions for there's no such thing in six-man ball. Popp is looking forward to even brighter things next year. We'll have agood nucleus returning and we won't have to be- gin asfar back as we did this year. The boys will at least know what I'm talking about next fall. Popp's a hard worker, a solid enthusiast for football. He drives his players hard but he drives himself as hard. He is so intense that he's likely to blow his top one minute and then pat the same player on theback the next minute. But, as Joe reasons, if the boy messes it up one play and does it right the next, why not? I think one of the greatest things hedid, said Walkertown's - Coach Joe Floyd, was to instill that desire to play football in the Southwest boys. WRESTLING TEAM LEFT TO RIGHT: Danny Hauser, Gary Jones, Robert Tuttle, Mike Van Doeren, Bobby Whitlock, Junior Stewart, Leon Holton, Dick Cooksey, George Jones, Robert Boggs, Norman Craver, Henry Miller, Coahces--Mr. Gilmore Binkley, Mr. Dixon Roberts. Wrestling 1957 Tournament Standings Henry Miller defeated four opponents and lost only once in the tourament to take third place in the Wrestling Tournament held at Burlington on February 23 and 22. Danny Hauser wrestled one of the best matches in the tournament when he defeated his first opponent 11-10. Hauser placed Third in the 95 pound bracket. The fastest fall in the tournament came when Junior Stewart pinned H. Hawkins of Myers Park in fifteen seconds of the first period. Since this was our first year for wrestling we consider this a good record.
