Refreshing and Vitalizing Memories! Such are the rewards of those who peruse the pages of this Mozarkian. No other memoir can so quickly bring hack the friends of college days. No other can so vividly recall those days of Work and play, of study and recrea- tion, of laughter and heartache, of failure and success. No other can so accur- ately reflect the great spirit of your Alma Mater. No other can so forcefully remind you of hopes fulfilled and dreams realized. Dream then with this book, As you dream may you receive strength to over- come temptation, Wisdom to face life's task, and courage to conquer the im- possible. Everyone is familiar with the saying, A school is judged by the pro- duct which it sends out to take its place in the world. It is unfortunate that there cannot be placed upon this product a tag showing the condition of the raw material as it entered the schoo-l. l am sure that if suchta plan could be adopted in schools as Southwest Baptist College, with her Christian atmos- phere, the reaction of the public as to her ability would be gratifying. As Alumni, we need but to look back upon the history Mater to see the tremendous sacrifices that have been made to keep this great in- stitution moving forward to the place she now holds in the hearts of her con- stituency. We need but to look to the courageous men and women who in try- ing days have gone without their salaries, and who have rendered their services cheerfully, or to those who have given of money, saved to satisfy a cherished dream, that the college might meet pressing financial obligations, to realize that ll ' more than an ordinary school. Every loyal alumnus is grateful for those sacriflces and for the many person- our influences and our gifts are pledged al benefits he has received. N xx. m m 'Ute Gofranation of the Mem., Almost everyone, has at some time enjoyed dreaming of the days of knights and ladies, kings and queens, All who saw the coronation of the Mozarkian Queen, December l8, at Muirheid Hall, could easily imagine that they were liv- ing in the time of good King Arthur. The bearing of the queen, Edna Bee Wood, the dignity of Prince Charming, Tilfin Teters, andthe attitude of their subjects made the scene very impressive. As Louise England played Wollenhaupt's Grande Marche Militaire the pro- cession, led by two pages, Eunice Nash and Jack Houser, entered the reception hall where an improvised throne had been placed. Next came Dean Pike and Mr. Oscar Pigg. They were followed by the Queen and Prince Charming and their attendants, Thelma Nease, Paul Eaton, Mildred Schnake and Willis Mur- daugh. After a short prayer by Mr. Pigg, Dean Pikeispoke a few well-chosen words concerning the attributes of womanhood. l Prince Charming then crowned Edna Bee, Queen of the Mozarkian and with all those present drank to her health and long life. The Queen responded by expressing her appreciation of the honor she had been given, and drank to the of the student body and of Prince Charming. A Again the strains of the Grande Marche M ilitaire were heardg the procession formed again and left the reception hall, this time led by Prince Charming and the newly-crowned Queen of the Mozarkian. N. . . f.Basketball When basketball practice started at the beginning of the year there were only two lettermen on the squad. But among the first year players who reported for practice were several who had been outstanding in high school athletics. After a few weeks of hard practice the Bearcats opened their season by de- feating the team of Morrisville High School, East Avenue Baptist Church of Springfield, and Draughon's Business University, also of Springfield. The Bearcats played three games with the Draugbon's quintet, winning one of them. The final tilt between the two teams was the most interesting of the three contests. In this game neither of the teams could get a safe lead until the closing minutes of play when the visitors got the advantage and held it, win- ning the game with a score of 18-20. Early in January, the Baptist College team from Moutain Home, Arkan- sas, came for two games which were among the outstanding contests of the sea- son. In the first game the Bearcats lost a seemingly safe lead and went into a tie which made an over-time period necessaryg the Mountain Home team won by a score of 36-40. The encounter the following night lacked a little of the excitement of the first one, but it was a fast game with the Bearcats leading throughout the time and finishing with a score of 42-36. In these two games the Bearcat forwards, Stahl and Kirchner, played excellent ball and displayed some of the best shooting seen during the entire season. Kirchner was the high point man for the two games, making 32 points, while Stahl was a close sec- ond with 31 points. A Another intensely exciting game was the one with the B team' of War- rensburg State Teachers College. The Bearcats played a hard game and show- ed some fine teamwork, but failed to make goals in the latter part of the game and were defeated 26-22. The last of January the team made a trip to the southwestern part of the state where they played two games, one with Monett Junior College and the other with Ozark Wesleyan at Carthage. The Bearcats were defeated in the Carthage game but won an easy victory over the Monett Bears, The Bearcats met the strong teams of Drury College and Springfield Teach- ers College during the season, and although they were beaten in both games, the Bearcats made a good showing against these senior college teams. The season closed March 2 with the Bearcats defeating Monett in a home game. - The' Bearcats had a good season: and, while they won only six of the four- teen games played, they developed some fine talent for next year's team. Each year he has had the task of developing a new team that would be a credit to the school and he has found it difficult as there were few lettermen remaining from the year before. Despite this difficulty he has put a great deal of work and untiring effort into the training of the squad. The Bearcats of this year, play- ing in several games of the season without a letterman as a leader, showed the results of their coach's endeavor in the manner in which they conducted their play. Coach Alexander instilled in them the true Bearcat spirit which symbol- izes victory or defeat with honor, but always clean sportsmanship. .4 F nv 4 QT Page Sixty-nine 4 . Mildred Schnake and Paul Andrews of the academy were chosen to support both sides of the state question: Resolved, that the several states should enact legislation pro- viding 'for compulsory unemployment insurance. The college debate ques- tion this year was: Resolved, that Congress should enact legislation provid- ing for centralized control of industry. After intensive preparation, these teams, accompanied by Professor and Mrs. J. F. Hurst, went December 3 to Winfield, Kansas, where they entered a large college debate tournament held at Southwestern College. The first team, com- posed of Tiffin Teters and John McReynolds, was victorious in all four pre- liminary debates, but in the sixth round was eliminated. The most outstanding event in the debate activities this year was the High School Debate Tournament, sponsored by Professor J. F. Hurst and held at Southwest Baptist College, February l9 and 20. Eighteen teams from south- west Missouri and northeast Oklahoma participated. On the evening of Feb- ruary l'9, a banquet was served at Muirheid Hall to the visiting coaches and teams. Two rounds of debate that night, and three the next morning, were run off before any decisions were announced, i Teams winning three of the five preliminary debates were permitted to en- ter the next round,,a single defeat thereafter serving to eliminate a team. Naturally the Editor is Won- dering about the Way his book will be received. At any time feelings are diffi- cult to express, but at this particular time it is almost impossible to describe the turmoil and confusion that is revolving in the mind of the Editor. Of course, his nerves are Worn to a breaking point, and as a result, he feels like saying to his captious critics, You may go to the place of adequate heat pro- vided and reserved for intolerants, bigots, and persons of superlative Wisdom and ability who would have made this Mozarkian so much better! But this expression would not be refined enough for the Editor: therefore, he must ex- press himself in more polished terms. There are no regrets to express that the Work has been long and hard. It is my desire that you should see only the finished product, and not the sleep- less nights, the keen disappointments, the wounded feelings, or the lessonless classes. Laying aside all humor, the Editor must express his sincere appreciation and admiration for his faithful staff that has given its time so willingly and liber- ally, for his faculty adviser and sponsor: for the entire administration of the schoolg for the student body, and for all who have had a part, however small, in lightening his task. Therefore, Without entire satisfaction or utter disappointment, the Editor implores you to accept this book with leniency. Qx f 5: Q L if l ' ,,, Linn? f X -Qt' il X .
