CLELAND, P1'eside111f The grandeur of the mountain thrills the soul of him who loves the beautiful. F the loft elevation flow many small streams to beautify and refresh the sur- rom y rounding country. So stands Southwest Baptist College as a majestic mountain peak, the handiwork of God Himself, sending forth its many streams of human life to purify and enrich the nation in which we live. It is hardly possible to go anywhere in Missouri or nearby states without finding men and women who are former graduates of this beloved institution. They are en- gaged in business, in the professions, in the ministry, and in many other walks of life. Many of the graduates of recent years are attending institutions of higher learning in order to receive advanced preparation for the work to which they have been called. Every loyalf alumnus possesses a growing appreciation for Southwest Baptist Col- S, lege. It is inspired by personal benefits received and by the high type of service that is being rendered to the youth of this section of our country. This appreciation should 5751 be expressed by loyalty to our Alma Mater. There should be nofdearer friends of the school than those of us who are graduates. The present success and future welfare of the college is largely in our hands, and by our moralsupport, believing that it is an in- p dispensable asset to the business, professional and religious life of our nation, by our 5, financial support, thereby proving the sincerity of our love, and by our prayers in its behalf and for its success, we can help to make Southwest Baptist College a continued y S blessing to young men and women of future days whose lives will be influenced by her high ideals and principles of Christian living. The students of Southwest Baptist College had assembled to choose and to crown their Mozarkian -Queen. All were loyal to the school, for it was one of the most outstanding occasions of the year, and all knew that the contest was close. The three candidates, Miss Grace Jewell Potter, Miss Lois Hutcheson, and Miss Rhea Landreth awaited the reports, as did all who were present, as the polls did not close until eight o'clock. As the sale of Mozarkians increased the number of votes, the totals became more and more obscure and increasing enthusiasm was displayed. At the stroke of eight, Charles Drake announced that the last vote had been cast. The report of the committee bro-ught joy to all, for Miss Grace Jewell Potter had been elected as our Mo- zarkian Queen. Though we feel that we could not have made a better choice, we have equal love and respect for the other two candidates, and sincerely hope that Tiffin Teters will find some use for his twelve Mozarkians which came so near placing Miss Lois Hutcheson in the lead. Grace Jewell is one whom we all love, not only the members of the sophomore class but everyone who knows her. Her charm, her modesty, her beauty, well deserve the high honor given her. Grace Jewell is a leader among her classmates and holds a creditable scholastic record. A signal for the ceremony which followed was given in the form of a march played by Miss Louise England, as the procession moved down the stairs and into the gymna- sium at the end of the hall. Two pages, Miss Marjorie Carpenter and Mr. Floyd Miller, led this march. Next in line came our beloved President and Dean, Dr. Redford and Dean Pike, followed by the three couples: Grace Jewell Potter and Gene Armstrong, Lois Hutcheson and Willis Thurman, and Rhea Landreth and Tiffin Teters. Gene Armstrong had been chosen by the student body as Prince Charming and Wil is Thurman and Tiffin Teters,.the second and third 1T1OSt popular boys in sghool. it fi A ' A .prayer offered by Dr. Redfo-rd as he stood at the base of the throne added to tae fi? impressiveness of the scene. Dean Pike brought a brief message in his gracious man- FV .A ner, emphasizing the purity of true womanhood and upholding the fine qualities of tae W5 girls on this campus, especially the one whom we had chosen as our queen. J ff . ms, Gene expressed, in behalf of the student body, the admiration for Grace Jewell, Q E, and very gracefullyhplaced a crown upon her head. Grace Jewell's modest remarks fi expressed her appreciation for the honor bestowed upon her. 19 Each one present drank to the glory of our queen. This was recognized as one of the happiest social events of the year. Q, S if Vg l ky, - N fs 3 A c. V I I 4 V ,I A Perfect Day It is a rainy day in 1940 and my friend and I are looking at some old keepsakes and souvenirs of college days at Southwest Baptist College. I, being interested in read- ing over some old letters, was startled when she suddenly said, Wliat is this book and to whom does it belong? Dear reader, do not breathe it to a soul, it is a diary of one of my former classmates. You want to know whose diary it is? Ah! I'm afraid I cannot tell that. That is a deep dark secret. Oh! You'd like to know what is in it? Come closer then and I shall tell you of a perfect day in the life of this schoolmate. Please do not crowd. Ah! The story begins. uOn this marvelous day I was rudely awakened by the clang! clang! of a bell. I turned over to catch another wink of sleep when I felt something poking in my ribs. What! can it be? Heavens! Is there no rest for the weary? It was my roommate re- minding me of work. I-Iow dare she just as I was dreaming of-!!! Ahem! I tried not to listen to her noise but could not make a gon of it. Glancing at my watch I saw it was only 6:30. Just a half hour and I would see 'ihimw at breakfast. I hurried into my clothes and was ready and waiting when the breakfast bell finally rang. I rushed into the dining room but 'then wasnit there. Somehow I didn't enjoy my breakfast but I finished and went back to my room to prepare for classes. In Bible Professor Beasley gave us a test. I didnit do as badly as I could have. In English Mrs. Hurst said I was lazy because I didn't have my paragraph. These dear teachers, I just love them! Oh well, I walked to chapel with him,' and lessons were forgotten in those few blissful moments. In chapel Dean Pike just told us about his trip to New York and the large shoe sign he saw while there. At dinner I couldn,t eat for watching 'thimf' I wonder if he is going to ask me for a date Saturday night? cc I - u I must have slept during French class because I donit remember anything about the lesson. Who could with Mr. Nelson for a teacher? Anyway, before I knew it the class was over and I was free for the rest of the day. I slipped out and met him down 6 b town. I hope Mother Ayres doesn't find it out. But he is so sweet and lovable I canit lj Q resist the temptation. At night after study period, my roommate and I went to a bunk- . S ing. party down the hall. About Izzoo o'clock we decided we had better go to bed, j 2 which we did immediately. .I-Iorrors! Just as I was dozing off, something began to A Ilgibfxbglnilqer igae. The students of the college constituted a majority Q of the classes, especially in the divisions of the young peopleas work. I The B. Y. P. U. Classes were conducted by Oscar Pigg, field worker in the state de- Q partments, and the enrollment in each class was good. ln one class the book, A General 6 B. Y. P. U. The lectures by Miss Kathleen Mallory, and the Bible lectures by Dr. W. E. Den- ham were well attended. Miss Mallory lectured each morning, using her trip through South America, and her visit to the missions of that country as the theme for her series of talks. Dr. Denham used the book of Hebrews as the basis of his lectures. Dr. Edgar Godbold conducted an interesting class in Denominational Organization and Work, and J. C. Hocket, Jr., conducted the Sunday School hour. On each of the Hve evenings during the week, Rev. Paul Weber delivered the ser- mons in the auditorium. Mr. Weber has been pastor of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City for the past eleven years, and is a popular and well known minister in the state. His sermons were delivered before a large audience each evening, and the in- spiration gained from these messages should be lasting. Special music was furnished during the day, and at the evening services by the music department of Southwest Baptist College. The string quartette, the Bolivar Com- munity Orchestra, the male quartette, the Ozark quartette, the glee- clubs, the chorus, and the instructors in the music department furnished the music for these services. 9:5 V 6? The spirit of debate was noticeable even before the questions were announced or the tryouts called. Because of this in- terest the debate committee decided to enter the academy team in the University Exten- sion Debating League for high schools and to secure as many contests for the college teams as ossible. When the academ tr out was announced five u ils answered the call. af . P P . Wheatland High School forfeited, Urbana was defeated, but Bolivar gained the decision, thus eliminating the academy team from further competition in the league. Bolivar High School eliminated the entire group of thirty-nine schools in the Southwest District and competed in the State League Tournament in Columbia in April. The Academy team later entered the Debate Tournament sponsored by the Southwest Baptist College, January 31, and was eliminated in the Hfth round by the Miami, Oklahoma High School team which won the large cup by defeating Joplin High School in the sixth round. The Miami teams had previously won tournaments at Southwestern College, Pittsburg Teachers College, and the Coffeyville, Kansas, Dis- trict meet. The score for the Academy team stood finally: won, six, lost, two. The first competition for the college group came December 5 and 6 when Tiffin Teters and Willis Thurman, accompanied by Coach J. F. Hurst, went to a junior college tournament at Winfield, Kansas. Begin- ning at eight o'clock Friday evening this team participated in five rounds of debate before lunch time Saturday, alternating sides from round to round. They won twice and lost three times. All other opponents of the year were senior colleges. Phillips University of Enid, Oklahoma, came for two debates and divided decisions evenly. For the next contest two teams journeyed to War- rensburg to meet the Teachers College teams, while a team of teachers came here to meet one of our teams twice. As before, the schools divided honors, each school winning one and losing one at home and on the foreign platform. Also each school won once on each side of the question. To close the debate season two teams from Northwest Teachers College came to Bolivar for two non-decision debates. The question used was: Resolved, that the nations of the world should adopt a policy of free tradef, The final record for the college teams then stands: won, six, lost seven, no decisions, two. fflfil Elf-'f gl C P T' M af pr, sy-. The Bearcats won this first game 16 to 14. The second game was won from Fair Play High School 29 to 27. On November 1 1 the Bearcats went to Pleasant Hope, the Polk County Champions, and were defeated 24 to 11. The two Draughons Business College games were two of the best games of the season. Draughons came here for the first home game December 1 and were defeated I9 to 25. Brock did some real playing in this game. On December 12, the Bearcats played the return game and won this time by a score of 42 to 24. Stewart was high point man in this game, making 24 points. On January 3, Drury met the Bearcats here and went home with a victory of 47 to 16. January 7, Monett Junior College came here to give che Bearcats a good game. It was a thriller all the way through. With only a few min- utes to play and the score tied 31 all, Stewart dropped in three goals and we won the game 37 to 33. Between semesters the Bearcats made a four-day trip to the northern and central parts of the state. On January I2 the Bearcats met the strong Kirks- ville Osteopath School and were defeated 61 to 32. Let the million-dollard ride, But me walking by thy side, I have more than he can buy In the reach of arm and eye. Outward sunshine, little pearl, Ch, I love you, college girl. Oh, for girlhood's artful ways, Sleep that wakes in holidays, Cheeks that mock all natural rules, Knowledge never learned at schools, .Of the styles that are quite late, I-Iow to put your lips on straight, What to wear with evening clothes, When to powder your fair nose. How to end a day of bliss Without giving e'en a kiss. A ,, For eschewing books and tasks ' Art will answer all she asks. Hand in hand with 'art she walks, Face to face to art she talks, Art has helped you, lady fair, To climb Society,s Golden Stair. Cheerily then, my little queen, Live to love as girlhood,s dream. Though thy college days are few, They will ever cling to you. After you have finished school I You go forth a polished jewel, Giving way to every want, I-Iark, a blushing debutante. Thus the years of youth go by Like the winking of an eye. Ch, that thou couldst know the bliss Ere it passes, little miss. W X, X fn gl, . H Grace West: I've a terrible corn on the bottom of my foot.
