GREENE Southside High School has indeed been fortunate in having Mr. Greene as its prin- cipal. His willingness to listen, his ability to think clearly, and his fairness in de- cisions have won him the respect of students and faculty. In spite of his many duties and responsibilities, Mr. Greene has always taken a personal interest in us as individuals. Also, through his interest in all school activities and the fine ex- amples he has set, Mr. Greene has inspired the students to take greater pride in their school. The Senior Class of 1958 would like to express its gratitude to Mr. Greene for the guidance and assistance he has given our class. MR. MILLER ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL We have known Charles Miller for two short years, but in those years we have profited much from this acquaintanship and from the examples he has set for us. If we follow these line examples, we shall surely be successful and a credit to society. Mr. Miller's primary duty is to relieve Mr. Greene of his disciplinary duties. These duties are enacted firmly but wisely. His methods may sometimes seem harsh, but he works for our welfare. We, the class of 1958, would like to thank you, Mr. Miller, for the understanding you have shown us. ENGLISH - Seated: Mary S. Jenkins, Mabel I. Everyone taking the oath promises to work with and for the Student Council. This year the Student Council was ably led by Dennis Newnham and advised by Mr. Greene and Miss Callahan. The Council has been successful in its campaign against litter-bugs, super- vision of Christmas decorations on homeroom doors, and the sale of school pennants. This success makes it possible for us to transmit this, our school, a greater, better, more beautiful school than was transmitted to us. OFFICERS President ............. ..... D . 'These members are chosen because they possess the qualities that make a good school citizen-scholarship, service, character, and leadership. This year the Honor Society is fortunate, for its membership includes leaders in athletic, musical, and class activities at Southside. Its members are good citizens who are a credit to our school. Guided by the Society advisor, Miss Elsa Brookfield, the members have maintained the high standards of the Honor Society pledge. On the literary end, the reporters were busy finding and writing the news items in an eye-catching manner. Along with them were the editors, selecting features, writing editorials, setting up headlines, and making assignments. The business staff collected ads and money to make possible the publication of the paper. Though faced by the problems of finance, circulation, ads, copies, and exchanges, these staffs, under the leadership of Miss Mabel I. Haupt, advisor, and Judy Bumbalo, editor, published successfully Volume XXXIV of the El-So-Hi, recording for future years the shad- ows cast by our students in Southside's annals. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The Future Teachers of America a chapter of Educo has as its objec- tive the recruitment of the most desirable students at Southside for the teaching profession. To accomp- lish this and to create interest in one of the oldest professions known to man, several members were al- lowed to conduct practice classes. With the belief that the life giving blood of education lies with its teachers, we may rest assured that education in our democracy will never die as long as we have organ- izations like the Future Teachers of America. 3 SCIENCE CLUB Due to the greater interest in scientific advancement, Epstimine, Southside's science club was formed. Under the close direction of its most capable advisers, Mr. Hayes and Mr. Ball, the organization has had a most successful year in establishing sounder bases for science students through experiments and field trips. A well-known vocal group at Southside is the Girls Glee Club. Under the direction of James B. Matson, the members of the Glee Club practiced hard and long to pre- sent outstanding performances. To further assure their success, auditions were held to select the outstanding voices. Through the past months, the Glee Club has filled the halls of Southside with harmonious echoes. Their en- thusiasm and musical ability has been well received and rewarded each year when they performed in the Spring Concert. Two boys-Pete Bambury and Ben Dixon-returned after previous experience in Varsity ball. Some boys from the J. V. ranks that showed promise were moved up to Varsity. The team improved a great deal despite the odds with which they were confronted. The fighting spirit of our boys can be best exemplified by the fact that none of them was ever knocked out of play, while players from the opposing teams were taken out. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Southside Varsity Basketball squad has shown a great deal of ability when it encountered the stiffest opposition in several years. Even though many of our opponents have had a decided height advantage, our boys have gained their share of control of the ball. A sense of team spirit and a fighting desire to win, not un- common to Southside's, athletes, have never left this group. As a result of this, some of our losses have been only by one or two points. This is a sure indication that our boys have played well even in the very last seconds of the game. A few extra 'breaks' would have meant a great deal in several of these events. Taking everything into consideration, this year's team has done a most commendable job. S.H.S. S.H.S. .... .... . S.H.S. S.H.S. .... .... . S.H.S. S.H.S. .... .... . S.H.S. .... .... . First of all, they accomplished a feat no other junior varsity team has done, they defeated rival Academy both games during the season. Secondly, the team consisted of nine freshmen and five sophomores, which means the young boys will get added experience for future varsity basket- ball. Last but not least, Coach Schwalb expressed great satisfaction at the progress the boys have made and indicated that several of them will make excellent varsity players. Going lip! Holloway pitched a no-hitter, but we lost. BASEBALL 1957 In 1957, Southside's Baseball Hornets lived up to the school's tradition of having winning seasons. Under the leadership of Coach Robert Habersaat, they fought eighteen tough opponents and finished with 10 wins and 8 defeats. With a few more breaks our record would have been much more impressive. However, the team played hard and deserved every victory it achieved. WRESTLING As wrestling squads go, our grap- plers left nothing to be desired. Several boys returned after a year's experience, which is one of the reasons why this squad was one of the strongest in many years. The strength was well distributed among the divisions. Their duty is to plan all Senior activities. Money raised by class dues, bake sales, and dances is used to pay for the Senior Prom and ban- quet, Senior yearbooks, and commencement arrangements. Our class has been fortunate in having a conscientious Senior Council which has worked diligently to provide for us a pleasant Senior year. Behind every graduating class there is a motivating force. As Seniors, we express our thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Lund, Mr. Barrett, Mr. Rossi and Mr. Schwalb for the guidance and encouragement they have given us. Now take my advire 81 Off to New York yearbook convention The story of that historically famous Class ol 1958. i ff .28 1 Campaign of 54 - 55 just as our forefathers struggled to leave a lasting im- pression, so we, the class of 1958 have campaigned to leave a lasting impression at Southside High School. As new recruits to the great army of S. H. S., the class of 1958, reduced from Captains in the Junior High Army to buck privates, reported to their capable leader, General Harry E. Barrett. 'Through the strategy of General Barrett and our new field officers, First Lieutenant Scott Steiner, Second Lieu- tenant Gene Augustine, Madame Warrant Officer joy Utter, Madame Adjutant Sandra Dean, and Madame Log- keeper Sandra Schaef, we successfully waged our first battle on December 18, 1954-The White Christmas Dance. Madame ,Squad Leader Sandra Deitzel organized the plan of attack by providing us with the U. S. O. unit, Meri- weather and his Merrimakers. Due to ingenious tactics our next encounter, The Half-Price Hop, held on May 6, proved even more tri- umphant. Under the combined squadronship of Sandra Deitzel and David Perry, we obtained the U. S. O. troup headed by Bob Michaels, with music by the top ten. Our platoon donated one hundred dollars to the treas- ury of the Army for the G. I. Bill fstudent loan fundj. Before beginning our two-month furlough, we were saddened by the communication reporting the transfer of the Commander in Chief Wallace J. Howell. Campaign of '55-'56 Returning from our furlough, we found ourselves private first-class and chose our leaders for the campaign: First Lieutenant Bruce Silvers, Madame Second Lieutenant joy Utter, Madame Warrant Officer Barb Tremaine, Ma- dame Adjutant Sandra Dean, and Madame Log-keeper Sandra Schaef. Another General was added to our staff of advisors-Madame General Luella B. Lund. We were greeted by our new Commander in Chief Arnold D. Greene, who proved to be an inspiring guide for our succeeding campaigns. N ' M- ' ., r X EQ ,V On October 21, the first major conflict of the season occurred with our Sock Rock, but it was brought to a successful finish with the aid of Curt Burnett's Orchestra. Following this battle, we faced another challenge, the Rock 'n' Roll Waltz that came to a successful completion on February 24, 1956. Providing music were the Mel- odians, playing from 21:00 to 24:00. Climaxing this campaign of '55-'56 was the dance, Starlight in Blue, held on May 4, which set a new prec- edence-that of holding a dance in the mess hall instead of the drill hall. Preparations for this battle surpassed those of all preceding conflicts. Marjorie Schiave and jean Fleming camoufiaged the hall beautifully with blue stars and soft lights. Adding to the beauty was the music of Dick Hamlin's Orchestra. Ordinary dress was abadoned and the platoon appeared in dress uniforms of their colors, baby blue and white. Following tradition, we sponsored the Log fYear- book, Dance, honoring the promotion of our comrades, the Platoon of '56, to Captains. Upon completion of this campaign we were saddened by the transfer of General Harry E. Barrett. I I I I Campaign of 56- 57 When we returned from leave, we were welcomed by a new General, j. David Rossi. Leading us during this campaign were: First Lieu- tenant Scott -Steiner, Second Lieutenant John Evans, Ma- dame Warrant Officer Diane Lampila, Madame Adjutant Sandra Dean and Madame Log-keeper Sandra Schaef. Squad Leaders Carol Marquette and Bruce Silvers or- ganized our first move of the season, The Bermuda Ball held October 4th, Again utilizing new ideas we held the Varsity Ball in the mess hall on November 9th under the squad leader- ship of Peggy Yerg and Robert Harner. Chosen King and Queen were Tom Mosher and Marlene Swimelar. Music was provided by a band composed of Ithaca College students. One of the greatest engagements of our campaign occurred the evening of March 1, 1957 at the Mark Twain Hotel. Our Junior Prom, the Crystal Ball, was made es- pecially spectacular through the romantic music of Dick Dejnozha's Orchestra, the decorations par excellence and the perfect cooperation of the entire platoon under the direction of Squad Leaders Lee Goodman and Mark Wilson. SOUTHSWE JUNIOR PLAY BRlGlDINE After two and a half years of anticipation we had the privilege of presenting our own play, a musical comedy entitled Brigidine to capacity audiences. Following this success we came face to face with an- other hurdle-that of successfully presenting Junior Day. This production proved that the talent of our platoon was equal to that of professionals in U. S. O. troops. At the conclusion of this campaign we faced again what seemed to be our destiny, that of losing a beloved com- mandant, General Rossi. Campaign oi 57- 58 At last realizing our ambitions we returned from leave as Senior members of the Grand Army of Southside. To lead us in this most important campaign we chose First Lieutenant William Cook, Second Lieutenant Thomas Hall, Madame Warrant Oflicer Paula Von Hendy, Ma- dame Adjutant Sandra Dean, and Madame Log-keeper Sandra Schaef. Everyone appeared with his good luck piece at our next skirmish, The Superstitious Shuffle. Music was fur- nished by the Melodians on Friday, September 13th. A distinct change occurred in our tactics when we presented judge Me Not, a tragi-comedy, on December 6th and 7th. Extraordinary talent was again displayed in this production. In accordance with established military custom, we celebrated coming Christmas leave with the White Christ- mas Dance held December 20th. Madame Squad Leader Joy Utter directed the maneuvers. To make the Irishmen in our platoon happy, we held a dance March 21st to commemorate St. Patrick's Day. Climaxing our four year tour of duty in the Grand Army of S. H. S. were the traditional Senior activities. On May 29th in the Mark Twain Hotel the most spectacular social event of the campaign took place-the Senior Banquet and Prom. During the banquet, tape recordings of important conlllicts brought back the joys and sorrows of our brief history. After this we added another success to our list of memories while dancing in the ballroom. Suddenly it was time to wage our final conflict of four years, Senior Day. Following tradition we displayed our talent in this review which included singing, dancing, pantomime, and an unusually talented band. Finally receiving our reward for all past conflicts in the four year campaigns, we marched into the assembly hall to receive our promotions to Captains in the Great Army of the Universe.
