DuBois Most Likely to Succeed K. Reardon P. Hollenbeck SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The first gathering of the Clan of '54f' came in September of 1950. A sense of frightened bewilder- ment was soon overcome thru the friendship formed with other lads and lassies who also shared our Freshman anxieties. Mrs. Marion Lynch Burke and Leslie Travis, as advisors, started us off on the high road , and to them go our thanks for having kept us there. For Freshman leaders of our clan, we selected Mary Amey Mosher, Catherine Keefe, Kathleen Rear- don and James Buffalin. Cornelia Supple was chosen as historian for all four years. The Freshman Kick- off was our first clan effort, and its success gave us confidence and made us feel we were now a real part of the school. In March we put out tartans aside and cheered the wearing of the green , as we presented our clan assembly. At night we donned cute little green hats and attended The Green Hat Hop , our clan dance. With June came the end of our Freshman days, but our return to school did not loom quite so form- idably. Arthur Smith, Ronald Dixon, Kathleen Reardon, and James Buffalin led the clan during our Sopho- more year. Our Freshman year had given us the experience we needed in working together as the Clan of '54- Q as Sophomores, we put this experience to good use. Our Skeleton Scamper , in October, found the lads and lassies riding their brooms down to the gym for an evening of fun. Then in December we were at the throttle of the Santa Special . With a hopeful eye toward spring, we presented the Cherry Blossom Ball in February. April was the month of our clan's assembly. With Jim DuBois as the capable interlocutor, and John Grim, LaVerne Anderson, Art Smith, and Jim Buffalin as the wise-cracking end men, we presented the Showboat Minstrels . That evening, minus our grease-paint, we donned our kilts and tripped merrily to the music at our Showboat Shufflev. The final event of our Sophomore year was the Yearbook Dance , which we presented in honor of the Seniors. September 1952 found us returning to Southside again-but this time as upperclassmen. Our work became harder and our responsibilities greater. Leaders for the clan were Teresa Bercher, Joseph Augustine, Kathleen Reardon, and James Buffalin. It seemed strange to walk the moors and not see our patriarch, Clifford McNaught. Howe.ver, un- der Wallace J. Howell, his successor, school life soon proceeded in a normal and orderly fashion. During our Junior year, the clan presented two dances-4'The Witches' Waltzi' and the annual White Christmas Dancev. Our clan play: One Mad Nightn, with Jim DuBois and Foy Lusk in the leading roles, received much applause. In May came our long-awaited Junior Day. For the assembly, we took our audience to a gay Mardi- Gras. That evening, for the first time in S.H.S. hist- ory, the Junior Prom was held in the Mark Twain Hotel. As Seniors, we proudly wore our plaids on our return to school. To lead us through our last and most important year together, we selected Ronald Dixon, Joyce Cecchini, Nancy Pierson, and Dorothy Kohan. Our first activity was the Back to School Danceu. Following this, all efforts were concentrated on our Senior play, The Robe , which will be long remem- bered by those who saw it. The deeply thoughtful interpretation of the role of Marcellus, the Roman tribune, by Chuck Adairg the loyal, steadfast De- metrius as played by Merkle Stanton, and the courageous devotion of Diana, the fiancee of Marcel- lus, portrayed by Mickey Sweeney, was drama of a quality not soon to be forgotten. ln February we presented the Senior Carnival. In May we gave our final assembly program, then came June and the Senior Banquet and Prom. Closely following were Regents exams and, at last, the long- awaited Commencement. Like those of other years, we wonder how four years could go so fast, and as we look back, we realize how much we have learned. We hope, too, that we have left our share to add to the traditions of South- side. Above all, we know that we will take away much more than we could ever give. 4, , ,n i.,-.-- - ,,,.-.- -. ,-- .. l Ng -f - . .f- f x 50 'T-f . . 2 V St Lge- ..f' ,. , 4-.r'---I. A f f 7 50 Our first year at Southside we felt strange partly be- cause the building was larger than grammar school, but most of all because we were Freshmen. Under the advisorship of Mrs. Margaret Hapeman and Patrick Goostrey, we chose these officers: president - Ed- ward Fitzpatrickg vice-president - Charles Myersg secre- tary - Dorothy Kelleherg treasurer - Sally Comfort, and historian - Mary Ellen Hogan. Our first dance, 'The Shamrock Shuffle was held in March with Gail Norman and Damon Sykes as co-chair- men. In the Senior Carnival our class supervised the check room. ln May the death of Edward Fitzpatrick, our president, saddened us all, but we were proud of the way Charles Myers assumed the leadership of the class. This year we began to really feel as if we were a part of Southside. At last we were no longer Freshmen. We elected these officers right away: president - Gail Norman, vice-president - William Hopkins, secretary - Mary Lou Personius, Treasurer - Pat Cordier, Historian - Mary Ellen Hogan. We had our Sophomore dance, wfhe Harvest Moon Hopf, The co-chairmen chosen were Carol Whitford and Kenneth Mann. Again we had a part in the Senior Carnival. We also presented the Yearbook Dancel' in honor of this year's Seniors. Our first two years at Southside have gone by quickly, and we are looking forward to being upperclass- men next year. Consideration is first given to scholarship, then by faculty vote, each student is individually judged according to the other three standards. The objectives of this society are to stimulate a desire to render service to the school, to promote worthy leader- ship, and to encourage the development of character in the pupils. Under the guiding hand of Miss Elsa Brookfield, the ad- visor of the organization, this year's members have enjoyed both business and social activities. A scholarship class was organized to better prepare candidates for the New York State Scholarship Examinations and enrich their high school education. 55 Q N -X J 1 in Qs . 5 G. Alexander, J. After only winning one game in the last two years, Southside, under a new mentor, Ted Casey, won three and lost five games. The starting eleven was composed of nine Seniors and two Juniors. Coach Casey will have to find replacements for Bud McLaughlin lendl, Earl Stanton lendl, Bill Cassada ftacklel, John Hale ltacklel, Bob Hancock fguardl, Art Smith lcenterl. ln the backfield they will be los- ing Jerry May fhalfbackl, Jim Dubois fhalf- backj, and Gary Sowers fquarterbackl. Southside will be putting all its hopes next year on ten returnees. Among these are Ed Michaels, who was voted a member of the All Southern Tier Conference and also a member of the Third Team All State. The Little Hornets under the able coaching of Charlie Andrews and Bill Dalrymple made a good showing with 2-2-1 record. The squad, made up of mostly Freshmen and Sopho- mores, worked hard. The experience they learn will help when these players are put on the varsity next year. 65 QT? NW 'Vw-Q .vw ww, 'Q' if ,QIOQ Wmfwa-sw-2 , si 8 Michaels, K. Fitzpatrick, W. Ladd, T. Stapleton fmgr.J.
