Dedica ion It seems a shame that tribute sometimes is not paid to a great individual until after his death. Such was the case in the recent passing of a very beloved friend- Cliiford F. McNaught. While he was with us, we took him for granted. He was there when we wanted him, he was there when we didn't want him. I shall never forget how shocked everyone was on hearing that our principal had died. It was about ten-thirty on the evening of June thirtieth. Several of the kids from school were a.t my house. We were all in a very pleasant mood, not even dreaming of such an unhappy experience as death. Then came the two phone calls: first, the parent, then, the teacher. It was hard to believe, it was hard to understand, it was hard to react. Most of the girls were silent, the fellows being the ones who spoke. However, the most any of them said was, Gee, he sure was a swell guy. It didn't seem possible, but it was true. Mr. McNaught was gone. He was gone, but his spirit was still there with us. We started recalling all the little experiences we had shared with him. Some remembered him as the man they had feared most in their high school years. Some remembered him as a big man, able to do anything possible. However, most of us remembered Mr. McNaught as the one person who believed in each and every one of us, the person who shared his parental love with us, the person who wanted all of us to succeed. We remembered how he used to sit in his oiiice, gazing upon a long line of criminals who had come for their sentences. We remembered how he used to greet us in the hall with a smile, or if he was troubled, with a slight frown. We remembered how his eyes always twinkled, especially during class day assemblies, those eyes that seemed to say with pride, They're mine. They're all mine. We remembered the last Senior Day as- sembly and how his eyes had filled with tears as the graduating class sang their last good-byes. We realized that all too soon, our own class would be saying good-bye, that it would be so sad, and that it would be so empty, for-after all-he wouldn't be there. P 4
