Yet, into this record will not go, cannot go, the memories of you I hold most dear-your gay insouci- ance, your little confidences, your final bursts of boundless energy that made each venture a delightful success. May the fond remembrance of these busy years, my sin- cere thanks for a pleasant experience, and my very best wishes for happiness accompany you through future years. Cordially, ff . As our Class of '51 now reaches the last step on its four-year journey to gradua- tion, the capable guidance which Miss Pauline Cooper and Mr. Thomas Stenson have offered us seems to gain a new significance. Without their sound advice and counsel it would have been difhcult to attain the successes which have been ours. We sincerely hope that Miss Cooper and Mr. Stenson have enjoyed leading us in our activities as we have enjoyed working under them toward the ultimate outcome. They have given criticism, inspiration, or praise when it was most needed. Truly, they deserve our thanks for a job well done. Dear Seniors: The time to say good-bye has come. These four years have brought ulaughter, tears, and sighs, but they have happy memories for all of us. May you keep the spirit of ,51 during the days ahead and may good luck go with you. ,JZWW 5 8 SENIOR COUNCIL lst Row: fl.. to r.J Larry Comfort, Roger Slocum, Carmen Caldarelli, Jack Morgan, Bob Budniok, Dick Celatt. 2nd Row: Katie Wigsten, Ann Lynaugh, Janice Frampton, Alice Good- nough, Anna May Robertson, .lean Miller, Carol Baker, Mary Young. HU UH SUIIIETY NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Ye ffl N i in fd .. 1 C Y F This year, for the first time, Southside's Honor Students come under the revised system which was put into effect by the Student Council in 1947. A student committee, with Abraham Golos as chair- man, and Mrs. Carolyn Austin as advisor, worked with a faculty committee under Miss Madeleine Daly, to bring about a change that has affected every student for the past four years. Report card marks were revised in order to provide a greater range of grades. 1, 2, and 3 were abolished, and in place of them 'it was decided that A, B, C, D, and F should be used, with A+ 95, A 90, B 85, C+ 80, C 75, C- 70, D 65, and F 64-0. ln addition, the standards and requirements for sen- ior honor rating were raised. Thus, to receive graduation honors a student now must earn, instead of seventeen term 1's, twen- ty-one term A's or their equivalent in B's-two Bis equaling one A. So that students will sustain effort during the third and fourth years of high school, at least seven of these term A,s have to be acquired in the junior year and the first half of the senior year, and at least two in the first semester of the fourth year. In view of this revolutionized method of marking, we can look with pride on this yearis honor stu- dents and salute them for their ability and perseverance. 35 A ack Mmdeyq Becker, m Gilbert, Snyder Roth ef 5 Com IN STUDIC ONE Senior Stars in Person Appear in 3-ACT COMEDY DeRSm'0 BEST FOOT FORWARD g'Buckle down, Winsocki, buckle down! From those rousing strains which literally blew the velvet open upon those kute kids-Katie, June, and company, speaking their cheerful little earful of welcome--to the final curtain call, 1951's Senior Play was a howling success. Highlights of the hilarious comedy, set in a boys' prep school, were Don Remington discussing women, Gene Cooper dancing with his pillow, Bill Chapman caught short , Joan Serio as his gorgeous date, Miss Delaware Water Gap, Jeannie playing the blind date as only she could, Joyce Ward in teacher's shoes, Bill Spencer, the Prexy, who couldn't understand a young manis fancy, Kevin's almost-Oxford accent, Roger, Myrna, Carmen, and Ann convincing in supporting roles, Dick Gelatt of The Weekly Bugle, Joyce being sweet and brave, Kay stunning as the cynical Hollywood star on a publicity jaunt, Dave, her world-weary agent, and finally Jack Morgan in the sym- pathetic role of the unlucky Bud who had asked two girls to the Prom. Inspired direction by Miss Moxley, brand new flats by Mr. Lantz and his boys, perfect props for the boys' dorm, gorgeous gowns, and most of all, herculean efforts on the part of the publicity and ticket chairmen were all factors in a memorable event. 36 Caldarelli, Morgan, Remington, Chapman, Q V, YQ aww' Sahler, Cooper, Amacher, Morgan, Spencer, Gelatt. h Woodward, Ward E 5 . A COMEDY Today we have a special TV feature showing a flash- back of that famous old movie, OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY. With the same giddiness and excitement of Emily and Cornelia, we, the Class of ,51, embarked on the open seas for the first time. Our hearts were fluttering as we ex- citedly boarded the SHS. ELMIRA in September, 1947. Being a bit bewildered at first, many of us had a hard time getting situated on so large a ship. To steer our class, route to success, the ship was propelled by Tug- boat Tom and Chris-Craft Cooper, assisted by our faithful Captain-Pete Perfetti. Invited by the passengers of the upper deck, we eagerly participated in their Mardi Gras celebration by vending hot dogs from a gaily decorated booth, but our biggest thrill of the year occurred on April 22 when we were given the run of the ship. My, what a showing the Barber Shop Quartet made at our Variety Show! And our memories wander back to the wonderful time we had at our first dance-g'The Kiddie Anticsf' Our crew continued to follow the merry footsteps of Emily and Cornelia. When we returned from Vacation Land, our spirited group chose Captain Chapman to guide us on our second lap of the journey. After Bill had been mysteriously lost at sea, the position of captain was assumed by First Mate Dailey. CLuckily, Eugene Cooper rescued marooned Bill a year later in time to prove 4'There's nothing like a dame. l The gold supply gradually increased after we staged the Pumpkin Ball and the Valentine Candy Raffle. Therefore, by the time Sophomore Day arrived, we had already won recognition from the other passengers aboard. The hold of the ship provided the right atmos- phere for our barnyard festivity. Who can forget Jeanne Woodward and Janice Frampton as the country-styled gals entertaining the crew with their hillbilly songs? When we boarded the ship in 1949, our hearts still rang with merriment since we were honored with rank of upper shipmates. Versatile Louis .laney now took command as captain. On December 14 the public address system 33 Mystery In the Library 'J lu Four! ACTS 0 broadcast the voices of our great orators-Moore, Cun- ningham, and Neal. To show our loyalty to Cupid, we staged the Cupid's Twirl on February 9, and when the gusty days of March arrived, a talented group of our crew produced the spooky playh-4'lVlystery in the Li- braryf' Bloody hands, spider webs, eery green lights, blood-curdling screams mysteriously emanated from no- where. For weeks the passengers felt icy chills up and down their spines because of the superb acting of Gerald- ine Chandler. Jeanne Woodward, Joyceiiningham, Beth Newell, Roger Slocum, Eugene Cooper, Earle Comfort, Frank DeBenzo, Bill Chapman, Larry Comfort, Dave Sahler, Allan Wise, Bill Wilson, Carmen Caldarelli, and the mystery man-Jesse Moore. F 1111 Ag the C 61-nival On May 12 a southern breeze blew over the crowd as Joyce Cunningham and Jack Brewer entertained at their cotton plantation. To conclude a very enjoyable day, we staged the traditional Junior Prom. The starry moonlit deck was touched by our magic wand and changed into a technicolor garden of romance. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Cinderella- Jeanne Woodward, and Prince Charming-Bill Chapman. When the ship docked for the summer, we were still glowing with precious memories of the Prom. September, 1950-lt didnit seem possible that we had reached the last lap of our journey. Our riotous time had made the years sweep by as quickly as the tides. We ushered in the fall season with a gay round-and-square get- together. What fun we had decorating our shoes, advertising our play '6Best Foot Forwardf' Then, with the jolliness of Santa Claus, we presented our White Christmas Dance, and when the wintry days of February approached, we heated the atmosphere by holding a carnival in the game room. Our last rendezvous was the Senior Prom, May 29, on top of the dance deck. Our toes twinkled as we danced, with visions of world conquests in our heads. There never had been-there never would be again-such a wonderful night. As we bade farewell at Commencement, we honestly knew that there T onntry Style would never again be a Hfirst time. Our hearts were young and gay, and we were leaving a part of them forever on board the S.H.S. ELMIRA. Its pur- pose is to further the study of historical institutions and to prove that history can be interesting and rewarding. A desire to promote these principles is the qualification for membership. ' The Society was formed on October 17, and with Miss Marian La Vine as faculty advisor, elected Robert Vivian, president, Charles Comfort, vice-president, Mary Lou Job, secretary, and William Hogan, treasurer. Since its formation, the Junior Historical Society has undertaken a number of projects. For example, Marlene Brown was appointed to attend lectures given by the County Historical Association and to re- port on these talks at the regular meetings of the junior organization. Another activity in which the members have engaged is the writ- ing of reports on various city buildings and organizations. In this way they have become better acquainted with the City of Elmira and its advantages. During its first year of operation the Junior Historical Society has achieved a commendable record. In future years' it should prove extremely successful and a popular adjunct to Southside's list of activities. 58 1 ' J- '- LandaatH5'I2'Hws.sg,1:. 1'0'Ss1.L... llchh 1 11 an, M- , J. M . ozer, D. Its purpose is to interest the students in the ac- tivities of the city, state, and national humane societies. Students from any year of high school are eligible for membership. Regular meetings of the Humane Club have been held every other Thursday. On alternate Thursdays in the auditorium the club showed noon movies open to all students. The annual party was held on the evening of January 24-. At another time there was a round-table dis- cussion of the laws of New York State pertaining to the humane treatment of animals. In April the members assisted the local Humane Society by filling the envelopes for that groupis annual membership campaign. This spring the club had a picnic and meeting at the Humane Societyis animal shelter on the Lowman Road. On May 11, the Humane Club's annual assembly featured a movie and the presentation of awards to the elementary and high school students who had submitted the best posters in the Animal Poster Contest conducted by the club during National Humane Week, May 6 through 13. 61 OFFICERS President ............ Mr. George C. Abbott, Director of Music in the Elmira schoolsg Miss Dorothy E. Connor, director of S0uthside's vocal groups, and Mr. William F.. Biery, director of the orchestra and band, are re- sponsible for the Vital structure of the music department. Thanks to them, and to the many enthusiastic students who sing or play instru- ments, there is music in the air everywhere. It is particularly an im- portant part of assembly programs, plays, and parades. For instance, the Christmas Assembly on December 19, 1950, was given entirely by the choirs under Miss Connoris baton. The song- sters appeared in choir robes and were arranged in equal numbers on each side of the stage, while between these two groups the Christ- mas story was enacted. Donald Riss, Jacob Bennett, Richard Sheive, and Robert Warne sang solos as shepherds. Janice Frampton sang the part of the angelg and Phyllis Kerlin, the part of the Virgin Mary. The combined choirs and the glee clubs showed their ability and sound training at the twenty-seventh annual Spring Concert held in the Southside auditorium on the evening of May 18, 1951. 1n the morning the Vocal groups presented their annual music assembly. Following the concert, the yearly Finale Dance was held from 10-12 in both gyms. The Boys, Glee Club consists of numerous talented boys who get together to blend their voices in song. For the Christmas Assembly and the Spring Concert this group rendered fine musical selections. They also sang for the Arctic League broadcast, a community-wide project. Turning to the instrumentalists, we say three cheers for the band in green and white that has led our players to victory on the foot- ball field and that made popular in the halls of Southside the well known iBuckle Down, Winsockilithe theme song of the Senior Play, BEST FOOT FORWARD. The orchestra plays for assemblies. Not only does the music help to create an air of opening night at the theatre, but it gives a certain dignity to the assembly. At Commencement it plays dignified melo- dies suitable for the occasion. ln the spring of the year the orchestra and band join the other music groups in putting on the Spring Concert. The Edsonian camera has attempted to present in a few flashbacks the highlights of Southsideis music department in 1950-51. To every student at Southside who is familiar with the music groups, these brief scenes of activity will always bring hack nostalgic memories. Apparently only baseball and football are Southside's meat. Compiling an overall 5-3 record, Southsideis fourth football team had a very successful season. Under the guidance of Francis Moon,' Mullins and Robert Habersaat, the Green and White warriors battled their way to the second slot in the Southern Tier Conference. High spot of the season was the fourth straight triumph over our cross-town rivals. Although many of the players were outstanding, only four were ofiicially recognized. Chosen for the Elmira Sunday Telegram All-Scholastic First Team were halfback Tony Weaver and center Ron Marks. Hornets on the Southern Tier Conference All-Star Team were Tony Weaver., who made both offensive and defensive clubs, ,lim Hollen- beck, defensive quarterback, and DeGrove Padgett, defensive end. When the ,layvee football players hung up their equipment, they boasted a 2-2-1 record. Coach Schwalb, taking over after Mr. Simonet re-entered the Navy, developed some very good varsity prospects. Under the coaching of Francis Moon,' Mullins, the Hornet cagers came through with a record of five Conference wins and 14- losses. This team, however, won more Conference games than had any other Southside basketball squad. Unluckily, before the season was half finished, Southside lost five of her players to the armed forces. Later on, four more missed games because of injuries or illness. Only ,lim Feldmanis performance earned for him a spot on the All-Conference second team. Coach Harold Schwalb's ,layvee basketball squad finished the season with a re- cord of four wins and 14- defeats. Considering that this Freshman-Sophomore team faced older, more experienced, opposition, it made a good showing. To cap an otherwise unimpressive season, Coach Francis Shepherd's wrestlers came up with three Sectional champs and third place in the Section IV meet. After helping compile a 5-5-1 season record for the Hornets, Bill Brimmer, Don Christman, and Dick Dean walked off with Sectional championships. Co-captain Dean completed his high school career with'26 straight victories in scholastic matches, two Sectional championships, and the Outstanding Wrestler award, while Brimmer captured three straight Sectional championships. Apparently 1950 was not the year for Track, since Hornet runners fared poorly. The capture of second place in the Geneva Relays was the greatest achievegnent. In that meet the hurdles relay team of Jerry Lenox, Ed Cavanaugh, Webb Comfort, and Larry Comfort set a new record of 57.6 seconds. But-in 1950 the Homets excelled in baseball as they swept the Southern Tier Conference championship under the direction of Coach Bob Habersaat. Veterans Tony Weaver, Jim Hollenbeck, Jerry Rothwell, Lou Graham, and Lou Minotti were top per- formers. Loaded with team spirit, this team could not miss. If next year's squads can turn in at least equal performances, everyone should be satisfied. However, let's all hope that sparkling material and top-notch coaching can produce even better overall marks. 70 1 . n Y 'Nh Y - ' VJ I : H , 2 P 1 w- I .E ' -g . 1 . f -X 5 A , f 'i-- ig 1, :L , ...L-22 V' 1' ' First Row: L. Under the leadership of Miss Judy Ritter, the Cheerleaders Club, as well as the Cheerleaders, came through a highly successful season. The sale of pillows, pennants, and hats by these girls fostered school spirit by adding a touch of comfort and a spot of green to the various sport events. Their Vic dances after the home basket- ball games were thoroughly enjoyed by the enthusiastic rooters. At basketball and football games the girls in green and white--SHS Varsity and JV Cheerleaders-spurred the boys to victory and sparked the enthusiasm of the crowds by their cheers and formations. To close the football season the varsity squad gave a dinner and dance in honor of the victorious Hornets. On the other hand the Girls Athletic Association consists of the girls of Southside High School who are interested in becoming better players in sports activities. Through this association we try to develop co-operative qualities in each girl. We want her to be a good loser as well as a good winner, to work as a team, and to react properly to a referee's decision. Basketball, volleyball, softball, badminton, and tennis are our major sports, plus a number of minor sports such as ping-pong, bowling, and tumbling. The girls who participate in the five major sports compete for a trophy. This year's Senior team, in its Junior year, won this trophy for all major sports. An All-Star Volleyball Team was selected by Miss Cleveland to go to Ithaca High School December 2, 1950. The girls who represented Southside were P. Reese, M. Coughlin, I. Backes, A. M. Robertson, S. Blossom, I. Marvin, M. Stickler, M. L. Job, and M. Mosher. Thirteen cities were represented and by a process of elimination SHS made the finals, only to come out the loser to Ithaca. We are proud that Southside High girls made the finals and that they had a good time and were a credit to their school. To raise funds to carry on its activities, the Association sold pencils and pillows and also had noon dances. Part of the money was spent to purchase for its record player an amplifier to be used in the physical education classes at Southside. This year has been a successful one for the entire girls' athletic department and we hope there are many more like it. '13 C , J! 6' Q isa 4 cacgii L 1 ff- -1 J' 84- Uwwltq Cheerleaders Club and J.
