Woermbke fN wg mill t x-.1 T Fo iw T LAST the frantic days of waiting were over, and an eager crowd of young musicians en- tered the portals of Southside High to join the newly created orchestra-the Class of 1948. At the first re- hearsal, the orchestra chose Mrs. Luella Bogart and Mr. Stanley Krouse for their orchestral arrangers. David Eichner was elected the first conductor. Dur- ing the succeeding weeks, rehearsals became more frequent. Under the expert guidance of the arrangers and able baton of the maestro, the first discords were overcome, and the music of the embryo orchestra be- came harmonious. At last We were ready for our first performance. Because of the need for acquainting the public with our music, we decided to let our first efforts take the form of a record album. The first record was the Skater's Waltz, made in honor of our skating party, the first activity and first success of our Freshman Year. On the reverse side was My Buddy, the theme song of our first White Christmas, or Buddy, Dance. When Freshman Day rolled around, we dis- covered that, despite our intense desire to settle down to more serious work, our hearts were still young and gay p so, for our Freshman Play, we recorded Our Young and Foolish Hearts. On the reverse side was cut the theme song of our booth at the Senior Carnival, Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? vi:-1 'llfl 1 i lk s. If f ' , wp - 'QSSIG' ln response to many requests, this popular album was followed by another made in our Sophomore Year. This year our conductor was Iohn Prunier, un- der whose baton we reached even higher peaks of success. To create a suitable mood for our second annual White Christmas Dance, we recorded Let It Snow, Let lt Snow, Let It Snow! and to change our musical color scheme and commemorate our Sophomore Play, The Showboat Minstrels, we made Old Black Ioe on the opposite side. We said farewell to the Seniors with the Yearbook Dance, for which We sang After Graduation Day. Our last disc of the year was The Wearin' of the Green, to boost the sale of the green and white banners at the Senior Carnival and make it possible for all loyal Southsiders to show their colors. During our Iunior year, our now well-known or- chestra made an encore album. Our Sophomore con- ductor, Iohn Prunier, once more ascended the podium for his return engagement. To get the activities of the year off to a gala start, we recorded, I Don't Have a Ghost of a Chance for our Hallowe'en Dance, at which ghosts and witches promenaded in eerie festivity. The other side of the record held, nat- urally, Turkey in the Straw, reminiscent of our Turkey Raffle. For our traditional White Christmas Dance we made a record of Christmas Dreaming. 7 'Ag 5 Our third thespian production was 32O College Ave- nue, the Iunior Play. Murder, He Says was used as background music for this hair-raising epic. How- ever, the main event of our lunior Year was the Iun- ior Prom. Dim lights, soft music, and romantic at- mosphere were the keynotes. Dancing in the Dark was sung by King Ioseph Manzari and Queen Nancy Knerr. To remind us of our booth at the Senior Carni- val, we recorded, Yes, We Have No Bananas. Maybe We didn't have bananas, but we did have bannersl To conduct the final album in the series, the or- chestra chose William Westervelt. He scored his first triumph with the recording Make Mine Country Style, which was a tribute to our Hallowe'en round and square dance. Then we Seniors donned our grease paint in preparation for our final appearance on the boards. Because of Clarence's popularity with members of the fair sex, the orchestra appropri- ately recorded My Hero. For our last White Christ- mas Dance the orchestra captured that elusive Christmas glow and preserved it in its sparkling ren- dition of I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas. The orchestra called all hearers to the Senior Carnival with a festive rendition of Come to the Mardi Gras, a gala affair, climaxed by the crowning of the king and queen. You Can't Get a Man with a Gun warned all potential Sadies at the Sadie Hawkin's Day Dance. Romeo and Iuliet, the play sponsored by our Senior Class, was one of the most successful events of the year. Because of the audience's enthu- siastic reception of the balcony scene, the orchestra chose to capture this vivid scene with a recording of Somewhere a Voice ls Calling. To herald the Sen- ior Banquet, the record Wine, Women and Song was added to our album. Now all the efforts of four years were rewarded as the honor students took their places on the stage. To laud this great occasion the orchestra recorded Shining Hour. The close of an eventful Senior Day was the inspiration for the re- cording of The End of a Perfect Day. A perfect four years was drawing to a finish. At last Graduation Day arrived with its impressive cere- mony and sincere nostalgia. To commemorate this occasion a record of the Alma Mater was presented to the succeeding Senior Classy a record of One Dozen Hoses to Ma and Prof, the arrangers who made all our music perfectly harmonious: and Thanks for the Memories to Mr. McNaught for his unfailing cooperation. As the final strains of music faded away, the album was closed. The musicians exchanged farewells and reluctantly left the portals of Southside High. They left with a proud remem- brance of their four successfully completed albums and a feeling of great anticipation for their more im- portant albums to come. Southside can point with pride to the most attractive, the most graceful and talented, the best dressed squad of girls in this part of the coun- try. Spurred on by the vivacious leadership of Mary lean Black, and letter-periect in the intricate patterns of yells and signals, Shirley Bennett, Theresa Cavanaugh, Lorraine Gingrich, Beverle Harper, Ruth lean Kendall, Frances Morgan, Sally Whitcomb and Joann Train have directed the enthusiasm of the Southside rooters at every game this year and at every pre-game assembly. Even the I. V. games have been distinguished by their own Cheerleaders-two squads ot apprentice leaders chosen out of a field of ninety. By next season, these younger girls are going to be right out in front at the big games, yelling, whirling, somer- saulting, in a truly professional manner. The Hornets came through an excellent season, coached by 'Moon' Mullins and Bob Haber- saat, with a .500 average for their first year of football. With chances that nearly all the team will return next year, Southside is expected to repeat its performance of this year and maybe to upset the balance of that average by a few points for the better. The Green and White started the season oft on the right foot when it defeated Union-Endicott 29 to 24. The team looked good and showed signs of promise. However, in its next league game Southside succumbed 30 to 33 in a bitterly contested game with Ithaca High. Then along came Murderers' Row, Binghamton Central, lohnson City, and Binghamton North. These defeated Southside in games of 56 to 36, 71 to 39, and 62 to 47, respectively. ln a breathing spell between the Iohnson City and North games, Southside tangled with, and lost to by a meager two points, the Elmira Free Academy in what was ac' claimed to be its hardest fought game. Recovering from the Triple Cities game, the Hornets knocked oft Vestal 52 to 4l and then lost to Union Endicott by one point in a 46 to 45 game. lthaca again managed to defeat the Green and Wliite in another low scoring game 30 to 21. Before Southside had a chance to recover from this pair of defeats, Central, lohnson City, and North popped up again with the same old story-Southside was beaten 64 to 22, 70 to 37, and 62 to 39. However, in a fast and furious battle the Green and White defeated Elmira Free Academy for the first time, 45 to 35. The Hornets clinched their crown by rolling over Binghamton Central 12 to 27 74 Endicott 14 to 45 Vestal 14 to lp Bingham- ton North l to O, and Iohnson City 7 to 0. All in all, the Green and White racked up ll2 points to their opponents' 20. In a quadrangular meet with lohnson City, Endicott, and Ithaca, Elmira tied lthaca for third place. Elmira again came in third in a triangular meet with both Binghamton high schools. Elmira placed second at a relay meet held at Geneva, in which eight teams participated. The zone meet with Ithaca and Auburn was won by Elmira. Track has again proven itself a popular lorm of athletics at Elmira High Schools. Hesse1son Rauscher COACH SHEPHPRD 0 '4 The biggest thrill for the girls of the Class of l948 is that they produced during their four years basketball players of championship quality. ln their Freshman year the girls of '48 played an outstanding game against the Academy Freshmen. Highlight of the Sophomore year was Field Day, held at the Academy with E. F, A., Elmira Heights, Horseheads, and Southside competing. S. H. S. girls showed their skill and teamwork by defeating the Heights and Horseheads, and tying the score with the Academy, thereby winning the Field Day championship. Home Room basketball, introduced in the lunior year, was the beginning of inter- class and Home Room competition. Room 201 was the winner in the double elimination tournament. Playing the Junior girls of the Academy, the S. H. S. team cashed in on team- work, accurate passing, skilled foul shooting, to defeat E. F, A. in both games The cham- pionship team, tops in their class and in their school against all comers, is pictured at the right, Once again this year, the girls of '48, now Seniors, established their interclass super- iority. Strong competition from the Academy made the scores 14-16 and 16-15 in the in- ter-school tournament. Competition in the other sports-volleyball, soccer, and softball-has been on inter- class level only, but with the same high standards of athletic skill and good sportsmanship. For the first time, in the spring of 1947, lunior and Senior girls learned the difference between driving and putting on the beautiful fairways and smooth greens of the S th 'd ' ' ou si e gym. Under the direction of Mr. Harry Shepard, pro at the Mark Twain Munici- pal Golf Club, Southside may produce a Babe Didrickson Zaharias yet!
