All, all are gone, the old familiar faces. Lest these words be all too true, we, the staff of the Edsonian, have chosen to present in pictorial form a record of Life-In Southside High School. As you turn the leaves you will meet again the friendly familiar faces of your principal, your advisers, your teachers and your classmates, you will view the numerous organ- izations which form such a vital part of school life, you will se depicted the scenes which you know so well, the serious and t e light, the classrooms and the halls, the swarming cafeteria, e embarrassing moments, the romantic scenes and others so dear to your heart. We give you this yearbook, this Edsonian, this treasury of mem- ories, in the hope that, in years hence, it may ' v as a bridge to 5 n the chasm of time and carry y u back to r Alma Mater. Mme 'Wx June 1947--and oh, so soon! Why it seems but yesterday that we en- tered this seemingly unfriendly building as frightened, fearful fresh- men. Yes, just yesterday, but today has eome and swiftly so. Soon we shall take leave of you, but when we do, we'll carry with us endeared, ever-to-be-cherished memories- memories of four fun-packed, work-packed, joy-packed years, of four momentous years which can never be relived and yet never lost. The towering achievements of the Class of ,47 have been made possible largely through the efforts of two very wonderful people--Mrs. Shays, known better to most of us as Carmody, and Mr. Lantz. Qver the din of Senior Day excite- ment, we of'l'er o u r profound 'ithanksu - Hthanksw to you who have worked so untiringly to assure our success. Wie extend our sincere gratitude, also, to Robinson who so gra- ciously aided us when MIAS. Shays relinquished her active advisory ea- pacity in the last half of our Sen- ior year. Her assistance has been truly invaluable. 12 William Jackson, Treasurvrg Barbara Kustcr, Vicv Prcsidcntg Arlcnv Shcplu-rd, Secretary Norman PZIKICTSUH, Pre-sidvnt. This amusing play was warmly received at both evening performances before audiences which totaled fourteen hundred. The play depicts the joys and sorrows of the Graves family, who live in a New York City apartment. Judy, the younger daughter, involves her family in situations which almost cause both financial and domestic disaster. One scene shows Judy and her family around the Christmas tree opening their presents. The last scene, one of the most colorful and gay, shows Judy entertaining some of her friends after a formal party. Of course, some production problems presented themselves. The main diHi- culty, though, was the absence of the leading lady, who did much of her rehearsing in a hospital bed. After her return to rehearsals, the problems of cues were in- creased. Some evenings after an hour or so of confusion and blundering, the whole cast would relapse into gales of helpless laughter. But after hours, days, and weeks of rehearsals, the 8th of November finally arrived. Everyone backstage was keyed up. However, after the curtain was drawn, the actors' performance was better than at any of the rehearsals. The Senior Class will never be able to thank adequately the members of the cast and the students who worked on the various committees. There were, in all, seventy-Hve students who worked on committees dealing with the play. All of the seniors who were connected in any way with this play, will always be grateful to Miss Florence Callahan for her superb direction and to all the faculty who so won- derfully assisted. Our first election of officers placed Robert Groezinger as captain of the new and untested ship. He was capably assisted by Vice President Barbara Kuster, Secretary Alice Andersen, and Treasurer Norman Patterson. To help guide us on our voyage we chose Miss Carmody and Mr. McWilliams: The Hrst test of our ship came in March when our first dance, the Shamrock Shuffle, was held. That dance showed that our class would certainly go far in the next three years. We entered our Sophomore year with Miss Carmody and Mr. Lantz as our advisers. We presented the Call-To-Arms Hop as the first event in our second year of high school. On February 23, in collaboration with the great seniors of '45, wc presented the Hatchet Hop in honor of our first president, George Washington. Of course Sophomore Day on March 16, was the most thrilling day of the year for us. We sponsored the assembly, which was a great success. The play, HA Mem- ory of Erin, which was presented by a good cast, dealt with an Irish family living in this country. That evening a dance was also held to celebrate the great day. We called this the Blarney Stone Ball. On April 23rd our play was given again at a P. T. A. meeting of which the Sophomore Class was in charge. Oh, by the way, we were carried successfully through this year with Dick Parsons as president and Doris Wright as vice president. The secretary was Mary Balch, and Bob Erway handled the funds for us. Our class ofiicers for our Junior year were Robert Broughham, president, Patricia Painton, vice president, Ramona Taylor, secretary, and George Osborne, treasurer. The first activity in our third year was the Hubba Hubba Hop which we pre- sented in September. The Hi-De-Ho-Down, a square dance, was given in October. On February 26, we sponsored a performance by Larry Hess, a wonderful magician. As Mr. Hess is no ordinary magician, his acts amazed all. The arrival of May 24 was anticipated by everyone, but the vividly remem- bered flood descended on Elmira that day and all thoughts of the junior Prom were driven from our minds. By June 5 we were able to reorganize our plans and the social high light of our school days finally occurred.. We were very excited and nervous as we took our places in assembly. The audience went into gales of laughter at the imitation of Duffy's Tavern that we Juniors presented that day. No one will ever forget Clifford Towner's characterization of Finnegan. That evening Norman Patterson and Joyce Butcher were crowned king and queen as a part of the annual Junior Prom. Our ship now came to the last lap of its voyagefour Senior Year. We were determined to make it a year that would not be forgotten. Norman Patterson was chosen to lead us on to final victory. Barbara Kuster became vice president, Arlene Shepherd, secretary, and VVilliam Jackson, treasurer. A senior must be chosen as Student Council president and the school chose James Donovan for this position. For editors of the El-S0-Hi Alice Andersen and Lois Wladis were chosen. To edit our yearbook we selected Abraham Golos. With Miss Carmody and Mr. Lantz still on board to help us chart our course, we began the year with a Back-to-School dance. Next came the senior play, 'junior Missf, The play was a huge success and will be remembered as one of the best ever given. During the Christmas season our class decorated a huge tree in the front hall. of the school. Christmas music was played during home room periods and between classes. On February 2, we held a skating party at Grotto Rollercade. It is understood that some students still remember the falls they took. Also in the same month we had the Senior Carnival. Three different acts were presented at the sideshow in- cluding some most unusual feats of surgery, a barber shop scene, and some won- derful freaks. A terrifying spookhouse provided thrills. To top the evening james Donovan and Arlene Shepherd were crowned carnival king and queen. To conclude the activities of our senior year, the senior banquet and prom were held. Of course, June is the most important month of the whole senior year. We are determined to struggle through Regents and on to graduation. Our ship will pull into harbor in June, its voyage successfully completed. 36 Twenty Years Hence Hello, all you happy people! Welcome to the new Lincoln Hotel. Tonight we are honored by the presence of the !'Class of '47 , who are celebrating their 20th reunion. Just look at all the celebrities in that happy crowd! There is the famous newspaper columnist, Joyce Clarke. Hello, Joy. Oh, my goodness, look who just slunk into the party. It's Bill Bennett, the notorious rnan about town. They say his latest is '5Toadie Andersen, the redhead manicurist at i'Angie's' barber shop. Shall we move around a bit? Well, look who we have at the speakers, table-Jim Eadie, the famous night club owner. Listen, he is about to propose a toast. What's that he,s saying? A toast to the final engagement of Edwin Drake and Lois Wladisfi Never thought they would do it, but after going together for twenty years, some- thing is bound to happen. Let's see what has happened to the former class ofhcers. There's the former Arlene Shepherd. That's her husband sitting next to her, '4Chots of the Ritzv, he's called. She certainly has come a long way from being secretary of the Senior class. Now instead of copying the minutes for the next meeting, shels counting minutes till the 4:00 feeding of her four months old daughter, Stella. Listen, what is that music? Would you believe it? It's Father Donovan, the noted coach at Notre Dame, raising his magnificent voice in the singing of uAve Maria. Will wonders never cease? Who is that hunk of wonderful male who has just risen so lightly to his feet at the speakers' table? Well, my goodness, it's the noted dancing instructor, Norm Patterson, and look at all the beautiful gals that have come with him to demonstrate his new dance steps: Beverly Appleman, Joyce Butcher, Helen Cleveland, Doris Robbins, and Pat Painton. Well, what have we at this table? It must seem good to the married men to be out alone for a change. Ah! Angie Muecigrosso, Chuck Clause, Fred Heller. Jimmy Honeywell? Look, theylre casting their eyes on the next table where we have four of our more successful career women: Barbara Kuster, full-back on the first women's football team, Doris Wright, well-known temperance leader, Joan Dalton, buyer for the men's department of Iszard's, and Margaret Stamp, world famous horse doctor. At the next table we have the renowned New York literary critic, Bob Brougham, and oh, look, who his companion is. Itls the lovely bubble dancer, Muriel Mathews. Very intimate, that table for two in the corner! Well, look what we have herewour school quartet is warming up for a smash hit, Suspender Bluesf' Ralph Barden, the local barber is singing bass, while Frank Bystrom, proprietor of the H6 and Mg Lunchv, is trying to join him, and Doug Blair and George Osborne, two bartenders, are struggling through the tenor parts. Look what's coming through the door, late as usual--Kay Titus, author of that literary masterpiece, 'SForever Evelyn. There's Margaret Aurnick, Broadway comedy star, coming in with Shirley Collins, New York's social butterfly, whose name has been linked with that of Arthur Carp, the king pin of the Fulton Fish Market. What is causing the disturbance over in the corner? Do my eyes deceive me fit's Marjorie Lundy, successor to Gipsy Rose Lee! She must be feeling gay be- cause I notice she is about to slip into her old routine. But wait, two of New Yorkis well-known policemen, Jerry Sowers and Ken Serfas, have her in hand. The toastmaster is beginning to speak again. Listen, he's reading telegrams of regrets from several old schoolmates. We hear the names of Jean TenBroeck. who is traveling abroad with her husband Joe Prunier, the great globe-trotter: and Betty Ruggles, Dick Root, and Pat Dove who are members of the touring cast of the hit play, The Iceman Meltsfl Regrets are also received from Bob Groezinger and Herky Diveris, the well-known women's fashion designers, and Daureen Dunn, who is confined to her bed by the arrival of her 15th bundle from heaven. Abe Golos, proprietor of an electric shop in Pine City, also is unable to attend, due to severe burns received when one of his employees, Thomton QBuggsQ Harkness, left a live wire on the Hoor. Also regrets are received from Roy Fax r. Jack English, Walt Farrell, and Jack W'orster, who are very busy defending the title of American tiddle-di-winks champions. . The party is breaking up now and with the noisy goodbyes of old schoolmates ringing in our ears, we too say farewell until the next reunion. 37 Ag! 1. As veterans of three years at Southside High School, the Junior Class is anxious to take over the Senior activities, even though the first three years have passed too swiftly. They recall with horror the struggles of their Freshman year. Under the able guidance of their advisers, i'Ma,' Bogart and Prof Krouse, they elected David Eichner president. After successfully presenting the White Christmas Dance and a skating party at the Grotto, they allied with the junior class in presenting the Buddy Dance. Their first real honor was the Freshman Dav Assembly and dance. The following year they felt much more at home at Southside. They elected Jack Prunier president and things got under way. The system whereby the traffic moving downstairs and that moving upstairs are separated, enables us to reach our destination quickly and with a minimum of pushing. At the beginning of the year 1947, the Traffic Squad reorganized. It was decided that, this year, in addition to its duties in keeping traffic moving smoothly they could have some social activities. The Blue and White suffered only one defeat in seven games and was unbeaten in con- ference play. The 14-14 tie with U-E led to a tie between Elmira and Endicott for the Southern Tier Championship. This is a fitting ending to the E. H. S. foot- ball union, for next season the Southside and the Academy will Held separate football teams for the first time in the history of the two schools. 1 E. Each spring when the mats and gloves are produced, all greet them with eagerness. The manly arts of self--defense have many exponents who enter into competition with our vaunted rivals from the Academy. Regardless of the host of brushburns and blackeyes, the participants learn muchfboth in mental as well as physical alertness. The fans, however, do not stand idly byg in fact, their jumping and cheering are tiring exer- cises in themselves. Whether to fighter or fan, these sports certainly provide a fund of hearty enjoyment. As the reader can readily observe, the tournament results and pictures in boxing and wrestling are not shown. Nor are the track or base- ball results included. To explain this lack of material, we must first be acquainted with the circumstances involved in printing the Edsonian. This year it was necessary to send all material to press by March 10, a date which automatically elimi- nated the spring athletics. This early date was required to secure the best results in printing the book. It is the suggestion of this year's Edsonian staff, therefore, that in succeeding yearbooks the year's ath- letic program be covered on a March to March basis, rather than on a September to May basis. Thus the entire athletic program may be pictured and, at the same time, they Edsonian would be of such quality as to be a credit to our school. y jXMw W , lsffioifffgfy WMQWTZQW X w2 - QT' MW K !
