The Dragons' poor showing in league play was generally attributed to the fact that they were playing their first year in the big time. St. Louis U. Crystal City bowed in a 740 floodlight contest in which the downstaters were Clearly outplayed only their ex- cellent punting saved thern from being swamped. Brother Dan has a freshman employed steadily, keeping a spot in the Athletic office dusted to receive it. cardinal prospect Bob Wagner, Dragon third' sacker, has attracted the at- tention of Charlie Barrett, famous St. Louis Cardinals' scout, who is very much in- terested in him as a Bed Bird possibility. Bob, a junior, is the fourth varsity player with professional prospects. Page Forty'Scvcn Njf iayvees o The junior varsity baseball squad, which should furnish the bulk of next year's varsity, has been entered in the Spalding-South Side Intermediate Muny League, where it will play as the Carl and Ruby Markets team. loe Brueggemann '39 will manage the nine in the league. Long-range hitting and plenty of it is this teams trademark. ln three games it has banged out a total of ninety-seven safeties, making thirty-nine in a single contest. Brother Dan, the iayvees' coach, attributes their terrific punch to the fact that they spend hours in batting practice while other teams are devoting these same hours to fielding grounders. But his team doesn't hit many grounders, so the opposi- tion gets little chance to use its fielding skill! First row: K. Speckart, R. Morrcc, R. Fuchs. Fccond row: J, Bishop, L. Groth, R. Gsllnck D. A tennis o As his first step in the stress tennisl' campaign which the Ath- letic Department is fostering, Brother Robert Wagner, coach of the netsters, entered South Side in the National Scholastic Tennis Tournament, primarily for the pur' pose of finding and developing talent among the underclassmen. Tennis letters this year went to Morgan Perry, captain, Frank Moeller, Ken Knese, and Frank Doherty. C. for the title. There was no play-off, the teams preferring to share the championship. The Prep League B division includes South Side, C. B. C., McBride and Central Catholic. The Green Wave swamped McBride twice, 22-6 and l2-6, disposed of the East St. Louis eleven 13-O, and walloped C. B. C. 2l-5. South Side's only defeat was at the hands of Central Catholic. The second C. B. C. game ended in a scoreless tie. Outside its league, the team showed well, take ing the measure of every other B aggregae tion it met, and bowing only to varsity elevens from Southwest, Burroughs and DeSoto. Ac- cording to Coach Brother Iames Powers, the team's strength lay in two things: an excellent line and constant teamwork. No single player was outstanding on the Green Wave.
